Chapter 6: Growing Vegetables in the Villa (Part 1)

After dinner, Ye's mother and Wang Xuanxuan went to the kitchen to clean up. Ye's father was tired today and went to rest early, saying he would get up in the middle of the night to take over the night watch. Wang Zixiang went to the rooftop sunroom to keep watch, while Ye Yunyi went to the storeroom to check on the supplies they had bought earlier and to unpack the packages they had bought but hadn't had time to open.

While unpacking the packages, Ye Yunyi felt relieved. Luckily, she had bought a lot of things during her recent move: a barbecue grill, charcoal, and alcohol fuel. With a yard now, she also bought a lot of seeds. Coming from the countryside, after graduating from university and renting apartments, she always felt that having a large yard like in the countryside was a dream come true, but this wish had been elusive for over a decade. She had seen many bloggers living a pastoral life in the city, with large balconies, rooftops, or small yards. They grew flowers and vegetables, and some even kept pets. She was incredibly envious and wanted to live like that too. Since buying this villa, she felt her dream was about to come true, so she bought a lot of flower and vegetable seeds—all sorts of them.

Because she had a passion for handicrafts and taught herself how to make clothes, she set up a workshop in her villa specifically for this purpose. The workshop is equipped with sewing machines, overlock machines, and huge piles of fabric and yarn.

Looking at the miscellaneous items in the warehouse, there were leftovers from the renovation, as well as cotton wadding, blankets, cabinets, tables, chairs, and other items that my parents couldn't bear to throw away.

Looking at these things, Ye Yunyi felt a little more at ease. At least for the time being, they could be self-sufficient. Tomorrow, she would turn over the soil and see what she could plant. If things got really bad, she would have these cotton blankets for warmth and these discarded tables and chairs for cooking. If she could survive long enough, even if she couldn't get out, she could make her own clothes. In short, she could manage to get by.

After roughly counting and categorizing these things, Ye Yunyi turned on her computer. She had finished downloading everything she had downloaded before, and she categorized them one by one. While she still had internet and electricity, she made a document out of the things she couldn't remember, so she could refer to it whenever she needed to.

Before she knew it, it was already 3 a.m. after finishing all that. She went to the rooftop sunroom to check on Wang Zixiang. Wang Zixiang was a typical night owl and was still wide awake. Ye Yunyi checked the security camera footage and then looked around. There was nothing unusual on the camera, and only a few rooms in the complex still had their lights on. She specifically checked Aunt Li's house; they had already turned off their lights and gone to sleep. Perhaps they felt that with Li Biao around, they had nothing to fear.

Ye Yunyi walked to the side closer to the back mountain and looked at the path near the back mountain. Although it was called a path, it was actually passable by car and could lead directly to the back gate. The back gate was only two buildings away from Ye Yunyi's building. However, the back gate led directly to the back mountain, and it was usually used by people who went out for a walk or did morning exercise.

The houses in this row all face directly onto this road, without any surrounding walls, which is why they are relatively inexpensive. Although Ye Yunyi won ten million, after deducting taxes, donations, and debt payments, the remaining money was barely enough to buy and renovate this house. The remaining 500,000 was intended for Wang Xuanxuan's schooling.

However, getting in from outside isn't easy. It's quite easy to get to the back mountain from their building. She'd been there once; a path had been built halfway up the mountain for development, with a pavilion, but the path ended there. Because of villa construction, the previous residents had been relocated, the fields were abandoned, and the mountain was covered with large tracts of trees. In prosperous times, this would be a great place for health and retirement, which explains the large number of elderly people here. There are still houses on the other side of the mountain, but Ye Yunyi didn't go to check.

A little while later, Ye's father came up wearing a coat: "You all go and rest, I'll keep watch."

"Dad, why don't you rest a little longer? Yunyi should go and rest too. I can still manage," Wang Zixiang said.

"You guys go and rest. I've rested for a while and I'm feeling better. Everyone's up this morning, so I'm going to sleep a little longer. There's air conditioning and a bed here, it's very comfortable."

Ye Yunyi was a bit tired after a busy day. Seeing the current situation, she guessed that there should be nothing to do tonight, so she went to rest with Wang Zixiang.

The next morning at 6 a.m., before dawn, Wang Xuanxuan woke up and automatically took over Ye's father's night watch. Around 7 a.m., Ye's mother got up, patrolled the area, and went to the kitchen to prepare breakfast. At 9 a.m., she woke up Ye's father and the others who were sleeping to eat breakfast. Everyone had slept for about 6 hours, which was enough. If not, they could take a nap at noon, as it was relatively safer during the day.

Breakfast consisted of porridge, homemade pickled vegetables, steamed buns, and dumplings. Eggs weren't cooked; they were a rarity. She took her daughter's words to heart and strictly followed their instructions.

After breakfast, Ye's mother tidied up, and Ye Yunyi and the others went to the pond to check on their fish. The pond water had gradually cleared, still carrying a hint of muddy yellow. When they fed them, some fish still darted out, so it seemed they were doing quite well. They wouldn't touch the fish unless absolutely necessary.

Previously, to make the yard look nicer, Ye Yunyi planted a large trumpet vine at the entrance. While she didn't care much for the flowers at the entrance, the roses, jasmine, and lily of the valley she planted all had to be moved or removed, albeit with a heavy heart. Around the wall were morning glories and wild roses that could climb the wall; in bloom, the entire wall would be covered in them—how beautiful her fence would be! These could be kept, as they didn't take up much space. They transplanted the flowers in the middle of the yard that could be transplanted, and reluctantly pulled out the ones that couldn't. Wang Xuanxuan couldn't bear to part with them, so she planted the remaining flowers in pots and moved them to the second-floor balcony.

Ye's father and Wang Zixiang started turning the soil. Ye Yunyi asked her father what they could plant these days. Ye's father said: Radishes, sweet potatoes, lettuce, celery, green vegetables, spinach, green onions, and potatoes are all fine.

Ye Yunyi went and got a bag of the shortest growing season of bok choy and spinach, intending to plant them in the yard. She also found some sweet potatoes and potatoes, selecting those that had sprouted a little. She cut them into small pieces, and although they were supposed to be coated with wood ash, she didn't have any and had no other choice but to coat them with soil.

Father Ye was a skilled farmer. He divided the yard into several sections, sowed seeds of leafy greens and spinach, watered them thoroughly, and covered them with plastic film to cultivate seedlings. He also planted sweet potatoes next to them, also cultivating sweet potatoes as seedlings. One sweet potato could grow into many seedlings. When the seedlings were a little bigger, they would be cut off and transplanted to other places. The seedlings from one sweet potato could be eaten, while the other seedlings could be eaten or left to grow sweet potatoes.
