The group worked together seamlessly. Zhao Yong and Wang Weifeng had already taken aim and fired, while Wang Zichao swerved the steering wheel and recklessly charged towards the traffic jam ahead.
Those people were stunned by Ye Yunyi and her group's reckless actions. The others who had come to the aid station before were meek and submissive, readily handing over whatever they were told. While a few were unwilling, they all cowered and surrendered the moment the car blocked their way and guns were brandished. Even the bolder ones fought back, but none were as reckless as this.
The other driver kept yelling "Stop! Stop!" and when he saw that the car was right in front of him and showed no sign of stopping, he quickly turned his steering wheel to make way for the other driver.
Ye Yunyi and the others left without looking back, seeing no need to waste time, energy, or ammunition in these places.
Once they were out of the enemy's pursuit range, Wang Zichao took a deep breath and said, "That was close."
"Not bad." Everyone expressed their approval and praise for Wang Zichao's driving skills. Wang Zichao's face lit up with a big smile.
"Judging from the appearance, the ambulance used to be located here, but for some reason they moved away. We just don't know where they moved to now," Ye Yunyi said.
"Yes, yes. We need to ask a local." Wang Weifeng said.
"I wonder where anyone is now?" Wang Zixiang asked.
“Such a big city, there will always be one,” Zhao Yong said.
As they spoke, the car drove onto a high bridge, with the river flowing below.
Y City has a unique geographical location, surrounded by mountains on three sides and bordering water on the other. Located in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River, it is also a municipality directly under the central government, making it a better place to survive than C City, where Ye Yunyi and her group are located. There's no way it could be deserted.
Looking at the surging river, Ye Yunyi wondered where she would go if she were the leader here after the rescue center was destroyed.
As night falls, the setting sun spreads across the river, a vivid representation of the line "A setting sun spreads across the water, half the river shimmering green, half red."
The group was still asking Wang Zichao about Y City, because apart from Wang Zichao, none of them were familiar with Y City.
"It's getting late, let's go to my place," Wang Zichao said. His newly bought apartment was in the new district, which was still a new school campus, so the occupancy rate was low. The only downside was that it was on a rather high floor.
Everyone agreed that Wang Zichao drove to his residential area, where there were some zombies wandering around or in a dormant state both inside and outside the area.
The chirping of birds nearby only made the silence more eerily quiet. Although their community was newly built, it felt somewhat dilapidated because no one maintained it.
Wang Zichao drove the car into the underground garage. Some zombies in the garage were attracted by the sound and light and rushed over while roaring. Wang Zichao rushed over and parked the car under his building. The group got out of the car, dealt with the zombies, and then walked towards Wang Zichao's house through the stairwell with weapons and food.
There were some zombies at the bottom of the stairs, but not many. After more than 10 minutes, they arrived at Wang Zichao's room. He lit some candles and then rummaged through some bedding.
The house was large enough to comfortably accommodate several people. They sat in the living room, looking out through the floor-to-ceiling windows at the scenery softly illuminated by the moonlight.
Wang Zichao said the night view was beautiful. Y City is famous for its beautiful night view, with lights of varying heights and flickering lights, and the river reflecting the lights, which was spectacular.
They sat by the window, talking and eating. Two years into the apocalypse, they had never been so relaxed. They didn't have to worry about zombies, enemy attacks, or food shortages. It felt like before the apocalypse, when a few close friends and family members gathered together to drink tea and chat about everything under the sun.
Ye Yunyi leaned against the window, listening to their casual conversation while gazing at the river outside. Her eyesight had improved considerably; she spotted a light in the distance on the river and stood up to open the window.
You're not mistaken, there really is a light, flickering, slowly approaching. It's a ship.
Yes, a boat. In a place with a river, if you're in the water, zombies definitely can't get close. I wonder if it's an ordinary person or someone from the rescue center.
Ye Yunyi stared at the boat, wondering where it was headed.
Seeing Ye Yunyi's actions, everyone stopped talking and followed her gaze. They hadn't been able to see anything before, but as the ship drew closer, they could see the faint lights. Everyone was excited, watching the ship's direction intently.
After waiting for more than an hour, the ship got closer and closer, and they finally saw that it was the size of a passenger ship with several people on the top. They looked around and finally stopped in front of Wang Zichao's house.
A man on the boat was gesturing with a flag, which Ye Yunyi couldn't understand, but Zhao Yong could.
He translated: They are the search and rescue team from Y City. They asked about our situation.
"Can we trust it?" After what happened during the day, everyone was a bit cautious. They couldn't believe that things would suddenly take a turn for the better.
Let's pretend we don't understand and see.
Everyone remained silent. The people below unfurled a banner introducing their background and saying that they would be picked up tomorrow, and that the people should take care of themselves.
They agreed first, and then waited for them to come and check on the situation tomorrow. After discussing it, they had Zhao Yong use a strip of cloth to make a gesture of agreement.
Seeing that someone understood the gesture, they were very excited and made a few more gestures, telling them to wait for them. The ship then slowly left to search for the other people.
Even though they were here, they still arranged for someone to keep watch at night. The next day, as sunlight streamed through the windows, they recalled the events of the previous day, which felt like a dream.
But they decided to wait. While waiting, they searched the building again. They found very little food, but fortunately they found some rice, flour, canned goods, and alcohol that could be stored.
Looking at the food, they prepared to take it with them when they left.
At 1 p.m., the boat appeared. They came downstairs and gave a signal. About five people wearing protective suits and carrying weapons came ashore and walked towards the community.
They agreed to meet downstairs, and Ye Yunyi and her group took some food and weapons and headed downstairs.
Seeing that they were five young men, the other party wasn't too surprised. They introduced them warmly, the leader being a square-faced man surnamed Guo, whom everyone called Captain Guo. He looked very upright and said in standard Y City dialect, "Don't doubt it, we are soldiers. We have rescued many people in the past two years."
"Is there a first aid station?" Ye Yunyi asked, pretending not to know.
"certainly."
"But we went to xxx Road, and it had already been occupied. We were almost killed," Ye Yunyi said, feigning fear.
"That place was abandoned a long time ago because of the zombie invasion. We're on the river now, so don't worry, it's safe there, there are no zombies," Captain Guo reassured us.
After listening, Ye Yunyi looked at the group, and then Zhao Yong nodded, and everyone boarded the boat.
There were already several people on the boat, all rescued today. Some were locals, and others had fled from other places. But most of them were men, so Wang Weifeng, who seemed the most talkative, was chosen to talk to them and gather information.
Even through the room, Ye Yunyi could hear Guo and the others talking.
"That's great! Two years have passed, and there are still so many survivors. Humanity is saved."
"Yes, but I wonder when this virus will be resolved."
"Secretary Cai said that the central government is researching an antidote and has made some progress. It should be ready soon, as long as we persevere."
"Yes, yes, you must persevere."
...
Hearing this, Ye Yunyi felt that this was normal. She felt that the leaders in City C were demons from hell, and her eyes couldn't help but well up with tears.
But the cautious woman still harbored a seed of doubt in her heart: what if it was all an act?
