Chapter 3 Participating in Community Shopping

After the home quarantine order was issued, many residents in the community group reported that they had no food and were not guaranteed food supplies during the quarantine period. Aunt Li's family was the most vocal, demanding that the community and property management deliver rice, flour, cooking oil, and vegetables to them daily. Some agreed, while others opposed.

The next day at noon, the property management issued a notice that one person from each household should go shopping by bus to a large supermarket controlled by the authorities. Daily necessities would be readily available, and everyone was advised not to rush or fight, but to be careful. Transportation would be by bus. Individuals were not allowed to drive themselves; those who wanted to go should register in the group chat.

Ye Yunyi hesitated after reading the message. Firstly, she worried that criminals might infiltrate the community group later on, and that they could easily find out who lived there based on the information shared in the group chat. Fortunately, she had only just moved in and hadn't posted much yet, not even changing her building number or name. Secondly, with a large bus trip, a large number of people could be caught in an accident. Seeing Ye Yunyi's hesitation, Wang Zixiang said, "I'll go. We can never have too much stuff. If we don't go, people will think we've hidden a lot. Besides, with the community organization, our safety should be reliable."

Wang Zixiang's words made sense, but looking at Wang Zixiang's frail body that seemed to be blown away by the wind, and his lack of common sense and medical knowledge, Ye Yunyi said, "I'll go. You don't know what to buy. If there's a pharmacy, I'll need to buy some medicine."

Wang Zixiang opened his mouth but ultimately said nothing. He owed his family too much and knew that Ye Yunyi looked down on him. Two years ago, he fell ill, survived surgery, but it drained the family's savings. Later, he was scammed in a construction project, losing millions of yuan, none of which he recovered, leaving the family heavily in debt. It wasn't until six months ago, when Ye Yunyi won 10 million yuan in the lottery, that the debts were finally paid off, and they were able to buy this villa.

Seeing Ye Yunyi carrying shopping bags and getting ready to leave, Wang Zixiang quickly handed her the stun gun that Xiao Deng had given him. Ye Yunyi smiled and said, "Thank you. Today you and Dad drained the pond, and we'll dig it a little deeper."

"Okay, go ahead, be careful. We'll take care of this," Wang Zixiang replied, seeing Ye Yunyi out the door.

Ye Yunyi checked the notice in the residents' group chat, instructing everyone to gather at the main entrance; the bus would arrive in about five minutes. Walking along the road, Ye Yunyi encountered several neighbors. Although they were somewhat worried, they chatted and laughed. Upon reaching the entrance, the bus arrived, and everyone lined up to board. Just as they were halfway on, an argument broke out at the front. "Why can't my mom go? More people means more food. Who knows when we'll go next time? I have a big appetite and eat a lot; if I only buy this once, I'll finish it in two or three days. Will you deliver it to me?" The voice immediately identified as Li Biao, Aunt Li's son.

The community and property management staff were trying to explain politely, but he wouldn't listen and kept shouting, putting them in a difficult position. This resulted in everyone being on the bus but it not departing. Finally, even the residents couldn't take it anymore. An elderly man advised, "Everyone, follow the rules. Stop making a scene. Go early and come back early; it's safer." Others chimed in, "Yes, yes, it's all the rules. Nobody's breaking them." Hearing this, Li Biao instantly turned to the people on the bus, his face fierce, and roared, "Who's babbling on? I'll teach you a lesson!" The bus fell silent instantly. Finally, they picked up Aunt Li, who, after getting on the bus, said, "If you'd done this earlier, we would have left sooner."

The bus finally set off, and they didn't see any zombies along the way. There were security personnel patrolling the road. Ye Yunyi sighed in her heart: The government is so good. It gives everyone a great sense of security. She prayed that the problem would be solved soon. She hadn't even had a chance to properly enjoy the big villa she bought yet.

Upon arriving at the shopping mall, Ye Yunyi got out of the car. The parking lot only had one bus; to reduce crowds and prevent accidents, only two buses of people were allowed to shop at a time, with a two-hour shopping period. People got off and walked into the mall. Ye Yunyi observed her surroundings; armed guards patrolled and stood watch all around the mall. The coffee shops, McDonald's, and cake shops, which were usually closed, were also not open.

Ye Yunyi walked into the supermarket. The layout was no different from usual. There were daily necessities at the entrance, followed by snacks and tableware, and then the fresh produce section. It was a pity there was no pharmacy. Yunyi thought she would have to find an opportunity to go to a pharmacy.

She pushed her cart to the snack section and bought a large quantity of instant noodles, self-heating rice, self-heating hot pot, canned fruit, beef jerky, spicy strips, and other foods that could be eaten even without water, gas, or electricity. Then she selected a large quantity of packing bags. She also bought sanitary napkins, soap, face towels, hand towels, toilet paper, mosquito coils, milk, bottled water, and so on. Only when she was almost full did she go to the fresh produce section and buy some meat, rice, and fresh vegetables. Then she silently checked if she was missing anything, and seeing that it was almost time, she went to queue to pay.

During the shopping trip, Ye Yunyi paid special attention to Aunt Li's family. Two people from the family had arrived, and they were quite ostentatious, each pushing a cart and buying everything in sight. They even snatched a lot of the good meat and snacks that the neighbors had their eyes on. Everyone knew what kind of people they were, so everyone just kept quiet and avoided them. Two hours later, everyone had chosen their desired items and got into their cars to head home.

As the car started moving, Ye Yunyi breathed a deep sigh of relief; everything had finally gone smoothly. But as is often the case when things seem to go smoothly, an unexpected event always occurs. Upon reaching the entrance of the residential area, everyone was busy unloading supplies when suddenly a zombie appeared from behind the car. It was a middle-aged man, pot-bellied, but half his face was a bloody mess. He opened his mouth, his teeth sharpened by mutation, and disgusting liquid flowed from it. He roared as he charged towards Li Biao and Aunt Li. Aunt Li screamed in terror, "Son, save me!" Despite Li Biao's burly, muscular build, he didn't fight the zombie. Instead, he grabbed an elderly man and pushed him towards the zombie—the same man who had tried to dissuade him on the way there. The old man was thrown onto the zombie, unable to struggle, and was immediately grabbed and bitten on the neck. Blood gushed from the old man's neck, and the zombie began to devour him. The old man didn't even have time to utter a word before dying in the zombie's jaws. Ye Yunyi gripped the stun gun in her bag. That scumbag.

The crowd had already become chaotic. Those who hadn't had time to grab supplies ran back into the residential area, abandoning them. Li Biao, holding Aunt Li's hand with one hand and pushing the items they had bought back with the other, headed towards the residential area. He shoved those who blocked his way, knocking over several more people. A woman in her fifties was pushed to the ground by Li Biao and couldn't get up for a long time, her eyes brimming with tears. Ye Yunyi was also busy heading into the residential area, but seeing the woman, she couldn't bear it and ran over to help her up. "Auntie, can you walk?" The woman thought she was going to die there, but unexpectedly, she was helped up. She thanked him and nodded, "Yes." Ye Yunyi, while keeping an eye on the situation with the zombies, led the woman towards the entrance of the residential area.
