Chapter 20: Search and Rescue Information Arrives

Finally, as the saying goes, every cloud has a silver lining. On the third day after the water outage, the first spring rain of spring fell. The rain was heavy; cheers could even be heard as each drop fell.

It's clear how excited everyone was about the arrival of this spring rain. People brought out every container they could find to collect water in the yard and on the rooftop.

Yang Yunyi's family also joined in collecting water. Although they still had a lot of tap water and purified water at home, they knew they would eventually run out. They purified the stored water using a water purifier and then stored it in previously used mineral water and beverage bottles.

The rain caused some unusual activity among the zombies. Instead of foolishly staying in the rain, they huddled together, seeking shelter—some under eaves, some under trees, and some in pavilions. Those who stood motionless in the rain looked like the most foolish of the zombies.

But if you really think they're fools, then you're the fool. Because as soon as they hear the slightest sound, they immediately chase after them, including the "foolish" zombies standing frozen in the rain.

So apart from catching rainwater, it didn't make much noise.

DouDou and XuanXuan were both very happy. Because there was electricity at home, their electronic devices could be used, and XuanXuan took pictures of the rainy scene with her phone.

After DouDou came to our house, everyone slept much more soundly. Although some people kept watch at night, they didn't have to be highly focused all night long, and sometimes they could even take a nap.

The spring rain fell for a day and a night, filling everyone's ponds, including the one Ye Yunyi and her friends had dug. The next day, Ye's father caught eight fish from his own pond and released them into the other pond, so that both ponds had fish.

Now there are also baby pheasants. When they grow up, they can have eggs and chicken to eat. Even if we eat all the meat we have stored, we won't have to worry about lacking meat and protein.

Two more days passed, and then a helicopter came down from the sky. It flew very low and had a loudspeaker playing a message that the survivors could go to the aid station in the north of the city if they wished. There, a base had been set up to receive survivors and provide them with food.

This news made everyone very happy, and they all exclaimed that they had finally received news from the government, some even moved to tears.

However, the villa area is located in the southern suburbs of the city, more than 50 kilometers away in the north. Previously, it was possible to get there via the ring expressway, but the current status of the ring expressway is unknown. Staying here is a death sentence, while going over there offers a chance of survival, but even that is extremely risky.

However, many people still left on the same day and in the following days after hearing the news. Ye Yunyi prayed that they would reach the ambulance safely. She hoped the horrific events described in novels wouldn't happen.

Upon hearing the news about the ambulance, Li Biao's mind raced; he was torn between going and not going. Going would mean being controlled, but at least there would be food and drink. Not going meant that the people and supplies here were almost depleted, except...

He thought for a moment, and aside from the unapproachable Boss Li and the country bumpkin next door who only knew how to farm, he figured Boss Li was out of the question, but the country bumpkin's family was someone he could try to win over.

Thinking about it, he climbed to the rooftop and looked at Ye Yunyi's house. Their greenhouse had been dismantled, and he could see that the roof and yard were lush and green, with lots of vegetables, corn, potatoes and sweet potatoes planted. Although these things were not rare normally, they were good food to fill their stomachs when there were no other supplies.

However, they are not ripe yet, and we still have food at home. We'll just wait for the country bumpkin to plant another one. When it's ripe and ready to harvest, we'll go and snatch it away. Wouldn't that be wonderful?

Thinking this way, Li Biao felt much better and stopped worrying about whether to leave or not. He went back to his room and went to sleep.

Aunt Li wanted to ask Li Biao if he was leaving, but when she saw him go to the rooftop and lie down, she guessed he probably wasn't leaving, so she went downstairs to cook.

Their house still had that old iron mesh gate. There used to be zombies lurking at the gate, which scared her, but she got used to it. It's pitiful that she has such a fierce son, yet she couldn't bear to change the gate. She only had her mind on how to rob other people.

Ye Yunyi's family was naturally unaware that Li Biao had officially set his sights on them. Although they had been on guard, after two months, they had become less vigilant. They continued to busy themselves with farming, resting, exercising, and reinforcing the houses on both sides of the house every day.

Over at Building 38, Ye's father finally had some free time, so he and Wang Zixiang installed the electric fence and two cameras. This way, they could monitor both sides simultaneously.

Sometimes I would use binoculars to check the surrounding area. There were far fewer zombies in the wasteland now, probably because of the rain, or maybe they were chased away by the helicopter that day.

There are still a few zombies scattered around the back hill. Actually, the back hill is a treasure trove; there were pheasants in that yard before, and there must be wild rabbits, wild fruits, and so on on the hill. It's a pity we can't go there.

They thought of digging a tunnel to the back of the mountain, but after digging and digging, everyone got a little tired, and they didn't know where the exit from the back of the mountain was, so they put the project on hold for the time being.

Meanwhile, Ye Yunyi's younger sister, Ye Yunjuan, was also running out of supplies at home. Older-style residential areas are the most vulnerable to such attacks. In the first month of the outbreak, they managed to survive on their stored supplies, but many unprepared people began looting. Now, there's only one organization in the neighborhood, raiding supplies daily. Many people who stayed indoors have had their doors broken into. They not only steal supplies but also kill people. There's even a psychopath who captured a zombie and takes it out to loot every day. If anything displeases him, he releases the zombie to bite people. He loves watching people's fear of zombies and the process of normal people turning into zombies.

If Zhao Yong hadn't reinforced the house beforehand and hadn't also shot arrows to intimidate them, they might have been robbed and killed long ago.

A month later, the power, water, and gas were cut off, making it especially difficult for them. Compared to Ye Yunyi's hometown, where they could get through the winter by wearing down jackets and cotton-padded coats, they were used to using central heating. As soon as the heating was turned off, they put on all their warm clothes and looked at the snow falling outside, feeling extremely anxious.

While sharing a packet of instant noodles again, Ye Yunjuan said, "Didn't my sister say we could go to their place? They grow vegetables in their villa." Back when there was internet access, Ye Yunyi and her mother kept in touch with Ye Yunjuan every day, telling them about her vegetable-growing plans and asking them to come back and visit them whenever they had the chance.

Zhao Wei thought for a moment and said, "The journey is too long, thousands of miles. There are no high-speed trains. We don't know what problems might happen along the way if we drive, or how far we can go."

"Sigh," Ye Yunjuan sighed deeply, "what are we going to do?"
