It was a woman's panicked voice. Their car hadn't crashed into them, but one of the tires was clearly collapsing slowly, and the car was unusable.
But the zombies around them quickly surrounded them.
The woman opened the window and shouted, then closed the window, pressing her face against it with tears in her eyes as she looked at Ye Yunyi and the others. Judging from her lip movements, she was clearly shouting for help.
Just as Ye Yunyi got a clear look at the woman's face, she was surrounded by zombies.
It's her, Hu Xiaoying, the wife of Wang Ke, Wang Zixiang's neighbor from his hometown. Didn't they always live in their hometown? How did they get here?
"Save them?" There was no time to think too much; saving them was the priority.
Upon hearing Ye Yunyi's instructions, no one asked any further questions. The cars behind changed lanes and surrounded the other car, forming a small circle with their front and rear connected. This way, they could eliminate the zombie in the middle and move around freely.
This combat method was taught by Zhao Yong and was based on his experience during his escape. Everyone was very familiar with it from daily training, so it was very smooth to operate.
After they surrounded the area, everyone started shooting arrows, and almost all of them hit the target. Occasionally, someone would hit the target if one or two missed.
Soon all the zombies inside the circle were wiped out. Ye Yunyi got out of the car to check on the people inside, while the others went to collect the bamboo arrows that had been shot.
“Sister Xiaoying, it really is you,” Ye Yunyi said.
"Yiyi, it's you! I'm so glad to see you, thank God." Hu Xiaoying and the others were just desperately trying anything.
Their tires had been punctured, and they had barely managed to reach this point. Seeing their convoy, they decided to try anything, even if it meant certain death. But to their surprise, it was Yiyi. Overjoyed, she burst into tears.
"Yiyi!" Wang Ke called out. "It's so good to have met you."
"Hmm," Ye Yunyi glanced into the car. A family of four, but Uncle Wang was missing. She knew without asking that they were gone. In the apocalypse, this was quite normal. She simply asked, "Brother Ke, where are you going?"
“We went to the ambulance, but we didn’t expect that we couldn’t get in. The car was broken down, and we had nowhere to go,” Wang Ke said with a sigh.
“In that case, come back with us. Zixiang hasn’t come out. Come back with me and see him,” Ye Yunyi said.
"That's great, thank you, thank you Yiyi." The Wang family was very happy and thanked Ye Yunyi repeatedly.
They didn't have much to begin with, so they took it all to Ye Yunyi's car. The four of them sat in two separate cars.
Ye Yunyi led them back to the villa area. Everyone gathered around, with Wang Zixiang and Xiao Fang naturally at the front.
After they returned, Xiaofang led a group of people to clean up the supplies.
Ye Yunyi and her family, along with Wang Ke's family, went to a special room to check their bodies for scratches or bites.
Wang Zixiang was also very excited to see Wang Ke's family and invited them to his home to rest and visit.
After Ye Yunyi and the others finished their medical check-ups, they went about their own business. Ye Yunjuan and Xu Qianqian, having heard that they had brought back a lot of books, came over with Wang Xuanxuan and Zhao Xixi. They helped move the books to the second floor of the school to build a small library.
The two men who knew a bit about water conservancy engineering, one named Chen Yu and the other Gao Fei, arrived immediately and began studying the relevant information and materials.
After dealing with all that, when Ye Yunyi returned home, she noticed that the atmosphere at home was a bit off.
"What's wrong?" Ye Yunyi asked.
Wang Zixiang said, "My parents and younger brother are in our hometown."
"When did they go back?" Ye Yunyi asked curiously.
"They came back about half a year ago," Wang Ke said. "They said that there was farmland and fewer zombies in their hometown, which was better than in the city. So I took them back to their hometown."
“They didn’t even come looking for us,” Wang Zixiang murmured.
Ye Yunyi noticed his disappointment but didn't offer any comfort. After all, Zhao Yong and the others had come all this way, while Chongqing was only a few hundred miles away. They could have gone back to their hometowns or come here, but they didn't.
"How are they now?" Ye Yunyi asked.
“We were all still alive when we left,” Wang Ke said.
"What's wrong?" Ye Yunyi asked.
Wang Ke repeated what he had told Wang Zixiang.
My hometown was originally sparsely populated and had few zombies. Most families had stored food and poultry, so we were able to make ends meet. But one day two months ago, a group of armed men came, took control of the village, and stole our food and poultry.
They set up roadblocks on the only route they could take to get out, allowing entry but not exit.
All the villagers were forced to work, living even worse than the previous farmhands. The elderly and children, anyone able to work in the fields, had to work. They worked from dawn till dusk, yet still didn't get a full meal, and were frequently beaten. Wang Zichao (Wang Zixiang's younger brother) had to take care of both the young and the old; he dared not act rashly, and now his life was also difficult.
"Our family escaped," Wang Ke said, his eyes reddening again. "We were able to get out thanks to my dad. He opened up the roadblocks and fought them to get us out."
Wang Zixiang's eyes also welled up with tears upon hearing this. "Where will all this work come from?"
Yes, Ye Yunyi and the others developed a villa area, but they are only busy during the busy farming season. They usually just take care of it, weeding and pest control, and are idle most of the time.
“They were clearing land, but there weren’t many people in the village to begin with, and then a group of them got infected and died. There wasn’t enough manpower,” Hu Xiaoying added.
Ye Yunyi finally had a chance to take a closer look at the family of four. They all looked pale and sickly, their clothes were dirty and tattered, and their faces and hands were covered in grime, even their 13-year-old daughter.
Sigh, exploitation and oppression exist everywhere. Fortunately, Ye Yunyi unified the villa area, and her family members all hold important positions. Everyone treats them with utmost respect, and even Wang Xuanxuan, Zhao Xixi, and their little dog Dou Dou are praised whenever they meet them.
"Yiyi..." Wang Zixiang called out, but couldn't get the words out for a long time.
"Don't worry, we'll go back and pick them up." Ye Yunyi said what Wang Zixiang hadn't said aloud.
"Yes, thank you, Yiyi, thank you." Wang Zixiang's eyes were red.
Ye Yunyi went to find some of her own clothes for Wang Zixiang and Wang Xuanxuan, and Wang Zixiang took them to the public bathhouse to shower before returning for dinner.
Holding the soft clothes, they took a hot bath and felt as if they had come back to life.
Especially when they saw the table full of fragrant food, they felt that this was the life a human being should live.
After dinner, Ye Yunyi let them choose an empty villa to stay in. They chose villa number 36, which was relatively close to Ye Yunyi's house and was originally Li Biao's. They were temporarily settled in the villa area, waiting for Xiao Fang to register their household registration the next day and see if there were any suitable jobs available.
