Chapter 17 Fighting Zombies and Adopting a Puppy named DouDou

After inspecting the house, they decided to dig downwards from the kitchen. There was nothing there, and they could easily hide the entrance by piling up some miscellaneous items. Secondly, their tunnel was dug from the basement beneath the kitchen, which was the shortest and easiest straight-line distance.

They wrapped the hammer in cloth and then placed a cloth on the ground to make it less noisy.

Ye's father and Ye Yunyi took turns smashing the ground with a hammer, revealing the soil underneath. They then began digging down with shovels.

While Wang Zixiang stayed behind to check the surveillance footage and keep an eye on the house's safety, Ye's father and Wang Xuanxuan continued digging.

Ye Yunyi didn't slack off by piling the excavated soil inside the house. Instead, she carried it little by little to the base of the wall, where it was hidden by the waist-high weeds all around.

After a night of hard work, they finally dug vertically downwards to the right depth. Ye Yunyi and her father were so exhausted that they could barely lift their hands.

Before dawn, Wang Zixiang reminded everyone that they needed to go home no matter what.

After Wang Zixiang confirmed that the surrounding area was safe, Ye Yunyi and her father nervously opened the door of Building 38, looked around, and then quietly closed the door behind them as they walked home.

They came clean and tidy, but returned covered in mud. After walking about 50 meters, Wang Zixiang's urgent voice came through the earpiece: "Run, run, watch out behind you."

Ye Yunyi looked back and saw two zombies chasing after her, baring their teeth and claws, completely different from their usual swaying and slow-moving state.

"Dad, run!" Ye Yunyi said to her father, and took off running, not caring whether she made a sound or not.

Fortunately, they were wearing soft-heeled shoes, so they didn't make much noise when they ran. But perhaps zombies also have a language, because the zombies that were originally loitering in front of Li Biao's door also ran over here.

There were zombies in front and behind him, and he was still 50 meters away from his house. When he ran to the door, he would probably run into the zombies. To his right were green plants and bushes, and to his left was the passageway between Building 38 and his own house, but the end of the passageway was the outer wall.

There's nowhere to escape; it seems the only option is to fight to the death.

"Dad, let's give it our all." Ye Yunyi gripped the shovel in her hand. Although it ached, the sense of crisis filled her with strength.

"Okay, I'll lure the zombies away in a bit, you hurry home," Ye's father said, raising the hammer in his hand.

"No, I won't allow it. We all have to go back. It's just four zombies, we can manage." Ye Yunyi pulled her father along, forming a protective back-to-back position with him.

Mother Ye was already waiting at the door. Ye Xuanxuan went to the roof, ready to shoot with an arrow. Wang Zixiang also went to the roof, holding a stone, ready to throw it into the distance. He didn't know if it would work, but he was trying anything.

The zombies on both sides were getting closer and closer. Everyone was ready, and the sky was gradually turning bright.

As the zombies drew closer, Ye Yunyi could almost smell the rotting stench emanating from them, a stench that made her want to vomit.

No sooner said than done, Ye Yunyi swung her shovel, knocking one zombie to the ground. Another one, enraged, lunged at her. Ye Yunyi then slammed the shovel down on its head.

Although both zombies were hit, they were not killed. The first zombie that was knocked down has already gotten up.

The zombies facing Ye's father were also rushing towards them. Wang Xuanxuan drew her bow and shot an arrow, but missed. Wang Xuanxuan drew her bow again and aimed again. This was her first time shooting at a living creature. She missed, but there was no time to feel frustrated. She immediately shot a second arrow, and this time she hit the zombie that Ye Yunyi had knocked to the ground and hadn't had time to get up.

Ye Yunyi saw the bamboo arrow and looked up, vaguely hearing Xuanxuan's voice from the rooftop.

She was overjoyed. Her daughter had cried the first time she saw a zombie, but now she could shoot arrows to help her—she was growing up so fast. Ye Yunyi quickly knocked down the zombie that had gotten up, repeatedly smashing the shovel against its head until it was flattened. Brain matter splattered everywhere.

Wang Zixiang's stone also rang out to the right of the zombies on Ye's father's side. The two zombies were briefly distracted and then rushed over again.

So he threw several more, slowing the zombies' advance. Then, Ye's father turned around and pounded the hammer on the head of another zombie.

While Ye Yunyi and her father were dealing with the zombies, the two zombies were also rushing towards them.

Wang Xuanxuan shot several arrows but missed, and Wang Zixiang's stones were also useless. Just as she was about to fall, a dog suddenly rushed out, knocked the zombie down, and then immediately got up and jumped far away.

He barked at the zombies.

Ye Yunyi turned around and realized that it was this dog that had saved them.

Having dealt with the two zombies in front, Ye Yunyi slapped the head of the zombie that had been tackled by the dog with another shovel.

After dealing with the other zombie, Ye's father punched another one.

"Run, run, run!" Wang Zixiang shouted.

Ye Yunyi didn't have time to pat it off, and noticed that there were faint figures coming from the distance on both sides.

"Run!" Ye Yunyi grabbed her father's hand and called to the puppy as they ran towards the house. In seven seconds, Ye's father and Ye Yunyi, with the puppy, rushed to the front door, and Ye's mother quickly opened the door and let them inside.

As soon as they entered, the two zombies that hadn't been killed came to the doorway. Luckily, their door was reinforced, and the zombies couldn't budge it an inch despite their pounding.

Ye Yunyi and her father stood at the door, panting heavily. They felt a sense of relief at having escaped death, but also a tense and fearful feeling of being on the verge of death.

"Quickly, go inside and check if anyone is injured," Ye Yunyi said.

After all, there was close combat involved, and everyone was safe only after the check.

So Wang Zixiang, Ye's father, Ye Yunyi, Ye's mother, and Wang Xuanxuan went for a checkup.

Fortunately, they were dressed warmly and acted swiftly and decisively, leaving the zombies with little chance of escape. Neither of them was injured, and they carefully examined the puppy again, finding it unharmed as well.

This is a Chinese rural dog. Not many people keep Chinese rural dogs in villa areas, but there are some.

This dog, though thin, is quite strong and must be trained; I just don't know how it got away. When I checked on it, it was very cooperative; it hadn't barked once since it came in, and even when it did, it was just a low growl.

Its understanding and human-like nature made it very popular.

"Thank you for saving me. From now on, you'll stay with us. How about you're called DouDou?" Ye Yunyi said, squatting down in front of the puppy.

"Woof." DouDou barked softly. Ye Yunyi patted its head and said, "From now on, DouDou is also a member of our family."

Ye Xuanxuan was very happy. She stroked Dou Dou's head and said, "You are a brave dog. You saved my mother and grandfather. You are a hero dog."

DouDou was very happy, letting Wang Xuanxuan stroke its head while wagging its tail happily.

It was also happy to join this family.
