Chapter 32 Let's Head to the County Town
"So...that's why we went to the county town?"
Ye Feng and Su Yun walked out of the small village along the cement road.
“Yes!” Su Yun walked ahead, carrying a wooden stick, checking the roadside signs along the way.
After walking for more than three hours, Su Yun and his group finally passed through a small town.
Night Breeze pointed to the cluster of buildings and asked curiously, "Why don't we go inside and look around?"
"This town is too small; we won't find what we're looking for inside. Going in would be a waste of time searching. Let's just head straight to the county town."
Su Yun looked at the road sign. The nearest county town was about 60 kilometers away, which would take two days and one night, just enough time for a round trip.
I've temporarily entrusted Xue Po to Wan Wan's care. Two days should be enough; there shouldn't be any major problems.
Packing essential rations, medicine, and equipment, Su Yun and Ye Feng set off.
Although Ye Feng had never been fond of the city, he still dutifully set off for Su Yun's decision.
Following the road signs, stopping and starting along the way, the road wasn't hard to find.
However, Su Yun had never left the small mountain village where he first started. When he had to pass through a village of moderate size, he couldn't help but feel uneasy, recalling the zombies he had encountered at the beginning.
However, the village had been abandoned for many years and was deserted. There were no zombies, not even a human being in sight.
Then we passed a few more small houses, which were in a similar situation.
The house had long been abandoned, and the interior was in a state of disrepair and decay; no one had been there for a long time.
Then they walked a very long distance and came to a relatively large village. It seemed that several slow-moving figures heard the noise and were slowly approaching.
Before Su Yun could react, Ye Feng, like a gust of wind, dispatched them one by one with his staff.
The already decaying zombie fell backward, making a heavy thud on the ground.
Watching him so easily take down those zombies one by one with a single blow, Su Yun was dumbfounded. Ye Feng began to explain in a low voice.
"There are fewer zombies these days. They used to be very troublesome..."
Night Wind swung his wooden stick and took down another zombie. Compared to dealing with mutated animals, he found dealing with zombies much easier.
"They seem to have become much dumber now, and they're slower. They used to be much more troublesome than they are now. There were more of them, and they crawled very fast. Although they weren't difficult to fight, there were just too many of them..."
Even after hearing what he said, Su Yun still advised, "It's still better to be careful."
Although Ye Feng was brave and his movements while wielding the wooden stick were quite dashing, Su Yun was still worried about whether the zombies carried any viruses. So he gave the wooden stick to Ye Feng as a weapon and repeatedly told him not to get any liquid on himself...
If you accidentally get it on your skin, wash it off immediately.
At first, Ye Feng said it was alright, explaining that he had fought his way out of a horde of zombies, his body covered in blood and even scratched, yet he hadn't mutated...
After listening to Ye Feng's words, Su Yun lowered his head and pondered for a while. It seemed that the beastmen were immune to the virus and there was no need to worry about being infected.
However, Su Yun was still worried, so she not only wrapped herself up tightly in long sleeves and trousers, but also asked Ye Feng to wear long sleeves and trousers.
Night Breeze didn't seem to like the heat and kept trying to lift the hem of his clothes to cool off, but when he saw Su Yun staring at him, he didn't dare to, and could only hold the hem of his clothes, which was very cute.
Finally, it got so hot that it could only stick out its tongue, like a big dog, to cool down.
Seeing the other person's silly expression as they kept sticking out their tongue, Su Yun couldn't help but laugh. She patted the other person's head and said, "Good girl, good girl, when we get to the city, I'll find you lots of rock sugar and make you some chilled sweet soup when we get home!"
The amount of rock sugar at home had decreased sharply due to the treatment of the wounded, and Ye Feng had not tasted sweetness for a long time. Now he heard that there was sweet soup to eat.
It's still chilled!
Night Breeze suddenly perked up again, flicked its tail, and before Su Yun could even sit for a while, it hurriedly set off again, seemingly eager to get into the city to find Bing Tang.
Encouraged by the chilled sweet soup, the two hurried along, and it was almost afternoon when they finally arrived at Xinyang County.
Xinyang County is a medium-sized county town.
Looking into the distance, tall buildings stand tall, roads are orderly, and the shadow of prosperity is visible everywhere. It is clear that this place was once very lively before it fell into ruin.
But as bustling it once was, it is now in ruins.
Su Yun approached a gas station on the outskirts of the city. The once towering building was now dilapidated, with broken fuel nozzles scattered everywhere, a smashed convenience store, shards of glass, and fallen billboards...
The gas station had been completely looted; everything was smashed and scattered on the ground, covered in a thick layer of dust.
It looked dilapidated and gray.
It doesn't even make you want to go in and find a bargain.
Su Yun decisively chose to bypass it and headed towards the center of the county town via a side path.
What she's looking for is usually not common in the county town. The only possible place is probably in the central business district of the county town or next to a large or medium-sized residential area.
Before it got dark, Su Yun hoped to get the item quickly, otherwise, encountering a mutated zombie or mutated animal in an unfamiliar environment would be extremely dangerous.
Without further hesitation, Su Yun checked her equipment again and headed towards the city center. Although she had never been here before, based on her past experience, city centers are usually located near transportation hubs like train stations. So, by carefully examining road signs and bus stop signs, she could roughly deduce the route.
"Xinyang Bus Terminal. It's three stops away from here. It looks like we'll be in the city center in a few more streets." Su Yun stood in front of a rusty bus stop sign, carefully assessing their current location.
They have now penetrated deep into the county center, where wrecked vehicles, vandalized shops, and scattered zombies are everywhere.
"Hiss—" Another zombie, having heard the noise of living people, dragged its broken limbs and stretched out its hands as it walked towards them. When Su Yun first encountered zombies, he was somewhat afraid of their hideous and terrifying faces. He usually knocked them over by the night wind and then ran far away.
Finally, as they ventured deeper into the city, Su Yun observed that these zombies, aside from being somewhat repulsive in appearance and making frightening noises, were slow-moving, few in number, and basically harmless. They posed less of a threat than the mutated rat they had encountered at the beginning.
And so she gradually became numb...
Upon seeing the newly appeared zombie, Ye Feng instinctively reached out and knocked it over with a stick.
Su Yun hurriedly said, "Don't worry about it, they can't catch up with us anyway, let's hurry and find a pet store!"
"A pet shop?" Ye Feng tilted his head slightly, asking with some confusion.
“Um…” Su Yun then remembered that Ye Feng was illiterate. She thought for a moment, “Well, how about this, if you find any pictures of puppies or kittens hanging above the shops, come back and tell me.”
"OK."
"Let's split up then!"
"But Su Yun, are you alright on your own?" Ye Feng was still a little worried.
"It's alright! Didn't you say you didn't hear anything unusual nearby? I can handle one or two zombies if I encounter one." Su Yun waved his wooden stick, indicating that he was capable. To bolster his courage, he had taken down a few zombies along the way to practice. He felt there was no problem. After all, he was a kid from the mountains. Who hasn't killed a few chickens and ducks? His mental fortitude was up to par.
It was already close to evening, and in order to save time, Su Yun decided to split up the search.
"Alright. I'll go check other places, you just search this street." Night Wind said worriedly, "I've already cleared most of it, there shouldn't be any zombies left."
"OK!" Su Yun made a gesture to indicate that there was no problem.
Night Wind glanced at her a few more times before quickly walking away.
Before leaving, he still struck the howling zombie with a stick.
That's surprisingly thoughtful.
Seeing that Ye Feng had started to move, Su Yun also picked up a stick and began to search the shops on both sides. Although this street was located in the center of a bustling commercial street with many shops, almost all of them had their doors smashed open, especially the convenience stores and pharmacies, which were dark inside with faint traces of burning and dried blood.
It's clear that the battle was fierce.
Su Yun didn't even want to linger and walked away. It wasn't the shop she was looking for, and besides, everything was sold out, so there was no way she could find what she wanted.
What she was looking for might actually be available in the supermarket, but now it's the tenth year since the apocalypse, and supermarkets, as important sources of supplies, have definitely been looted time and time again, and there are many dangers associated with them.
On the contrary, a pet store might be a better option, since not many people would think of that place.
Su Yun carried a wooden stick and looked around the street. There were many kinds of shops, but the pet shop she was looking for was nowhere to be found.
Standing at the end of the road, just as Su Yun was struggling with which direction to continue her search, the night wind caught up with her...
"There seems to be one over there, the kind of shop you described..."
"Come on, take me to see this quickly."
So the two of them jogged all the way to the shop, which was located five blocks away from the commercial street and in an inconspicuous location.
The sign features a grinning husky, with the words "Funing Pet Hospital" written next to it.
"Funing Pet Hospital!" Su Yun exclaimed happily, then pointed to the sign and said to Ye Feng, "Look, the two characters in the middle say 'pet,' which refers to small animals cared for by humans." While searching for supplies, Su Yun didn't forget to educate the kitten.
Night Breeze glanced at it curiously, then nodded to indicate that he understood: "There's a shop with a little dog up there. But it looks like it's already been searched..."
Su Yun stared at the open gate, the dried bloodstains, and the broken bones...
"Uh, it looks like things aren't looking good..." The pet shop was a mess: broken cages, bloodstains, shattered glass... It wasn't hard to tell what had happened. The mutated animals possessed stronger limbs, sharper teeth, and more primal desires...
Seeing the horrific scene in the hall, Su Yun couldn't help but feel a chill and stopped in her tracks.
Seemingly sensing Su Yun's fear, Ye Feng stepped in front of her and said softly, "I'll go in and take a look first."
"Let's go in together!" Su Yun was worried about Ye Feng going in alone and insisted on going in together.
"Then let's go together." Ye Feng was also worried about leaving her outside alone.
