Li Ke did not agree to Jian Ye's request. She needed to think about it further. In any case, she was quite comfortable living alone now, and her new home was very nicely decorated and safe.
However, if everyone goes to the shelter, she would be too conspicuous standing alone outside. Li Ke wanted to wait and see how things went before making a decision.
Almost all the refugees from outside chose to stay in the shelters, while many ordinary locals were running out of supplies and were at their wits' end. The establishment of the shelters and the compensation they provided greatly alleviated their living difficulties, so they also chose to move into the shelters with their belongings.
However, some people who lived in relatively good conditions and had stockpiled a lot of supplies in advance hesitated.
When the shelter was halfway through construction, another group of refugees, numbering around 20,000 to 30,000, were escorted into N City by the military.
After the shelter took in these people and made some simple arrangements, it quickly incorporated them into the construction team to expedite the expansion of the shelter.
The temperature dropped extremely quickly, from a high of over 40 degrees Celsius to a near-freezing state in just one month.
While the shelter is undergoing expedited expansion, some of the renovated sections have already been put into use, and a considerable number of people have successfully moved in.
In order to meet the deadline, a large part of the shelter construction was carried out by reinforcing, expanding and renovating existing relatively solid buildings. For safety and convenient management, the shelters were also divided into zones, and each zone was surrounded by a sturdy and tall isolation wall.
Standing on the top of the tallest building, Li Ke observed the overall layout of the shelter through binoculars. The most central area was a high-end villa district, where powerful and influential people still lived, which was also the centralized center of power in the entire shelter.
As the shelters were built, the weather grew colder and colder, with temperatures dropping to minus ten degrees Celsius within a week and continuing to fall. The last group of people who remained outside, fearing they could not withstand the cold, chose to move into the shelters.
During this period, Li Ke adopted many more cats and dogs, a large portion of which were obtained from pet owners in exchange for food and water. These owners couldn't bear to part with their beloved pets, but they simply couldn't continue raising them. Only after Li Ke promised that he wouldn't eat or abuse them, and at most would euthanize them, did these pet owners resell their pets in exchange for food and water to sustain their lives.
Of course, Li Ke concealed his true identity and appearance while doing these things, and did so secretly.
Li Ke and a small group of people became independent individuals who stayed outside. Some of them were too lazy to move, while others distrusted the environment of the shelter and preferred to die in their own homes rather than move to the shelter and share a bathroom with a group of people, without any privacy.
The building where Li Ke lived was basically emptied out. These people moved out very thoroughly, dismantling and taking away all the furniture and decorations that could be burned.
Wooden doors and windows, and everything useful, were dismantled and moved to the shelter. If there were any suitable, unowned items that could be used to reinforce the shelter's doors and windows, the group would also collect them and use them in the shelter's construction.
The weather was so dry and cold that your breath would freeze instantly, and there were no people to be seen outside. Li Ke had set up an insulated isolation room in her house. Her insulated room was a fully functional single room with a bedroom, a living room, and a bathroom. Whether it was washing up, resting, or entertaining herself and watching TV, she could do it all.
The rest of the time, she exercised indoors. The interior of Li Ke's house was originally well insulated, with a temperature difference of about 20 degrees Celsius compared to the outside.
However, without any heating equipment, the temperature in such a spacious, open-plan apartment was still rather low and a bit cold. But in order to allow her body to adapt to the temperature, Li Ke did not use any other equipment to increase the temperature in the room. She used her three-story house as a winter sports venue.
When the cold wave hit before, there were several hailstorms of varying sizes. The temperature kept dropping, and the rain turned into tiny ice particles.
Since the tsunami, sunny weather has become extremely rare. Even when temperatures are very high, the sky is often overcast and shrouded in gloom.
The sky was overcast around three or four in the afternoon, and soon it began to snow heavily. Li Ke, who was practicing his aim with a modified smoothbore slingshot indoors, saw the heavy snow falling outside the window and stopped what he was doing.
The first snow after the cold wave fell heavily and densely, drifting and scattering so much that it almost completely obscured the outside world.
Li Ke took a cup of hot milk tea from her spatial storage, stood by the window, and frowned in annoyance as she watched the snow falling outside.
If all goes well, this snowfall will last for two days and one night, and a second snowfall will follow soon. During the next six months of extreme cold, heavy snowfall and various hailstorms will be the norm. The snowflakes and hail are not pure white and clean; they are always mixed with some gray or blue variegated colors.
The snow kept falling, and Li Ke couldn't go downstairs. No one was clearing the snow downstairs, and overnight, the snow was deep enough to easily bury an entire floor.
If all the residents of this building were still alive, they could gather everyone to go downstairs and clear the snow together. But now that only Li Ke is left, it would be a waste of his energy to go downstairs and clear the snow by himself. Using the snowplow in his spatial storage would be rather conspicuous.
Li Ke sighed. There was nothing lacking in the space, and it wouldn't be a problem to stay in this room and completely huddle through the winter.
