Chapter 162 Bandits

Li Ke took the tools from Song Xian and tied them to the car. Then, he got in and asked Song Xian, whose eyes were sparkling, "Why are you still following me?"

Upon hearing this, Song Xian's face fell instantly: "Brother benefactor, are you alone? Or do you have a team? There's a group of bastards down the mountain who commit murder, arson, and all sorts of evil deeds. They've captured many innocent people, and I'd like to ask you to help me bring some people to rescue them."

Li Ke started his motorcycle: "I'll wait for you in the village ahead. If you can find me, I'll consider it."

Song Xian watched the car speed away, stood there disappointed for a minute. He had thought he could sit in the back seat. With a sigh, Song Xian carried his hunting rifle and ran towards the village ahead.

He had to cling to such a powerful figure. Thinking of the white flour pancake he had just eaten, he realized how delicious it was. Song Xian felt that the last time he had eaten such delicious food was in his past life.

Song Xian walked for more than two hours before reaching the village entrance. He sat down to rest for a while at the entrance, then got up and went into the village to start searching again. Although he was chasing after his benefactor, he did not forget to observe the surrounding environment, but he still did not see anyone.

Remembering his companions' words when they covered his escape—that if possible, they should find someone to rescue them, and if not, they should escape far away and never be caught again—Song Xian's eyes welled up with tears again. He couldn't give up, even if there was only a sliver of hope.

After wandering around the village for half an hour, Song Xian finally saw smoke rising in one direction. He ran towards it and, sure enough, saw his benefactor there, lighting a fire to boil water.

Song Xian ran over happily: "My benefactor, I've finally found you."

Li Ke sighed. Song Xian's way of addressing him was really awkward. He waited until Song Xian got closer before saying, "My surname is Li, Li Jia, the Jia in Jia, Yi, Bing, Ding. My age is..."

Li Ke originally wanted to say that she wasn't older than him and that he shouldn't call her "big brother," but he stopped himself in the end. He then thought that it was probably for the best that this was a misunderstanding.

She made up a name for herself. Tanaka had sent out her information, and there were traces of her at the shelter. Li Ke thought it best not to reveal her real name to outsiders.

Hearing his benefactor introduce himself, Song Xian was even happier: "Brother Li Jia, you're really amazing! Are you a soldier? Your marksmanship is incredible!"

Li Ke ignored him, and Song Xian wasn't embarrassed. He started looking for things to do and tried his best to impress Li Ke.

As night fell, the fire on the ground was still burning in the dim moonlight. In the empty room behind them, Li Ke's tent had been set up. Song Xian had also boiled water to wash and clean himself up. He had changed into a set of work clothes, cut his hair, and roughly shaved his beard. He could now be described as looking brand new.

He sat next to Li Ke, carefully adding firewood to the fire to keep it burning, while explaining his situation to Li Ke in detail.

Li Ke had taken off her gas mask, revealing a square and resolute face. It was a new face mask she had found in her spatial storage. After eating, she put the mask back on.

Song Xian said he made a small fortune before the disaster. He had good luck for the two years before the disaster, and when he had free time, he took his savings and traveled around. Then he heard the tsunami warning.

At the time, he didn't take it too seriously, so he didn't follow the group too far. Instead, he left the coastal city and rented a house in a high-lying area in a neighboring city to take refuge temporarily.

There were quite a few people in that place who shared his thoughts, and seeing so many people with him made everyone feel more relaxed.

Who knew that one tsunami after another would follow, followed by a series of earthquakes and acid rain, and this group of people had no choice but to pack up and flee, following the people they met on the road to run to a safe place.

After a long and bumpy journey, they finally arrived here in the coldest weather. They originally wanted to enter the shelter in the city below, but it was just a small city and was already overcrowded and could not accept any more disaster victims.

Finally, a kind person pointed them in the right direction, saying that there were still some people on the mountain that they could try to reach. Most of them were elderly people who didn't want to move, and if they went there, these elderly people would welcome them.

Song Xian glanced at Li Ke and, seeing that he was still listening attentively, continued, "After leaving the city, we traveled more than two hundred miles of mountain roads and entered the largest town here. There are still forty or fifty households in the town guarding their homes and not leaving."

When they saw that there were more than a thousand of us, they were not hostile at all. The old village chief even helped us arrange houses and gave us a week's worth of food. Although it was mostly coarse grains like sweet potatoes, radishes and beans, it saved all of our lives.

We settled here temporarily, and everyone worked together to find all the resources available in the vicinity to prepare for the coming winter.

But with food and clothing scarce and the weather getting colder and colder, the harsh winter was not yet over. Of the more than 1,200 people, less than 500 had died. Just when they felt the temperature was about to rise and they finally made it through, a group of bandits attacked again.

They not only seized our houses and the supplies we had painstakingly saved, but also bullied men and women and committed all sorts of evil deeds, treating us like laborers, making us dig holes and build houses every day, and only giving us one meal of porridge a day.

In less than two months, more than two hundred of our people died, but these people don't care about human life at all. No matter how many people die here, they can bring back another batch of people to make up for it.

Later, we learned from the newcomers that the city's shelters had also been taken over by a private group, and these people had been sold to them by that group.
