Li Ke spent a month raising his wall to five meters high and making it nearly two meters thick. He not only installed surveillance equipment with no blind spots on the wall, but also connected it to the power grid.
The outdoor temperature was close to 50 degrees Celsius at noon, and the water level in the nearby river had dropped to its lowest point.
Every morning from 5:30 to 7:30, Li Ke would do half an hour of ground warm-up exercises, practice various shooting and target practice for an hour and a half, and then exercise for another two hours from 4 to 6 pm. Although she had chosen to exercise quite late in the afternoon, after a workout, it felt like she had taken a refreshing sauna.
After exercising, she would climb the wall and stand on the observation platform, which had been specially raised two meters, to observe the movements in the distance.
Li Ke didn't know what changes would occur to the human body's functions after living completely underground, but she did know that humans who lived on the surface, although tormented by high temperatures, would experience a significant increase in their cold and heat resistance as they lived longer.
Although Li Ke now has a comfortable underground castle, she is unwilling to give up any opportunity to improve her physical condition, so she will continue to do necessary ground exercises.
Temperatures will continue to rise, and under this heat wave, water resources will evaporate and be lost rapidly, posing another severe challenge to human survival.
However, Li Ke observed that there were fewer and fewer people on the ground in the town below. Because of the doomsday prophecy, most of the informed and capable shelters accelerated the collection of various resources and the construction of ground defense projects as winter was about to end.
Extreme heat has arrived, and humans have begun to move to underground living in large numbers. This is a last resort. Li Ke saw that solar panels had been erected in the town below, and it seemed that people's lives had improved considerably.
At the current temperature, the solar panel can still work for a while, but when the temperature reaches around 70 degrees Celsius, the solar panel will no longer be able to work.
By then, her safety grid and monitoring equipment will have changed into various forms, but Li Ke doesn't care. All her hard work is to gain more assembly experience.
In addition to following the instructions for installing and using these devices, she also consults her hard drive's knowledge base when she encounters problems she can't solve. For Li Ke, who now has some free time, doing this is very useful for passing the time.
Li Ke has been charging her power bank recently. All kinds of batteries, including the various electric vehicles in her space, a large part of which she collected along the way, are fully charged. This way, even if the solar panels stop working, the electricity she has stored will be enough for her to get through the next five months of extremely hot weather.
Over the next month, Li Ke discovered that the people in the town below had started a new activity. They began to hide during the day and go out at night, cutting down large amounts of dead trees in the nearby mountains and hauling them back to their town by the truckload. The logging area was gradually approaching the village ten miles below Li Ke's new home.
Once the group passes that village, they will reach the dead end. The ten-meter-long pit is almost dry now. Standing at the dead end and looking up, they can see the tall, sturdy, round, and simple wall of Li Ke's house.
Li Ke rushed to the other side of the dead-off road overnight and buried three rows of landmines in a staggered pattern on that road. At the very end of the dead-off road, there was no cement surface, only hard soil, which was perfect for burying landmines.
If the person doesn't reach the end of the dead end, the landmine won't be triggered. Li Ke then erected a large iron sign 500 meters away, which read: "Restricted Area Ahead, Enter at Death."
After finishing all that, Li Ke went back to her home and began a semi-secluded life.
Two weeks later, the landmine was suddenly triggered at dusk. Li Ke, who was exercising and practicing boxing in the yard, heard the explosion, climbed the wall, and saw a destroyed car, two dead bodies on the ground, and two people supporting each other standing nearby, carefully retreating.
Not far behind them, there was a car parked, and two people were standing next to the car, observing Li Ke with binoculars.
Li Ke stood in the observation tower; the other person might be able to see the telescope lens, but not her.
She noticed that there seemed to be two more people in the car who hadn't gotten out yet. Based on what she observed through her binoculars, these people didn't seem to be the same people she had seen in the town before.
Aside from the two people sitting in the car, whom she couldn't see clearly, the others outside the car, including the dead bodies on the ground, were all dressed in clean, uniform, and fully equipped combat uniforms. They all looked to be in good physical condition, comparable to the prisoners she had rescued in District One. However, in terms of demeanor, they seemed to be quite different from those prisoners.
Both cars and the people inside looked very expensive; even in this harsh apocalyptic world, they didn't seem to try to hide their wealth.
Li Ke took a bottle of iced cola from her spatial storage and drank it. So what if it's expensive? We're still being steamed by the sun, but at least we're as comfortable as she is now!
Li Ke watched as the intact car picked up the two injured people and drove away, leaving their companion's body behind. Her impression of this group worsened, and she wondered what the people in the town below were doing.
Were these people newly recruited? Or has some new force joined them? Or is there some other hidden story in that town?
The situation in the town was actually pretty much as Li Ke had guessed. When Song Xian returned to the town that night, he was almost kidnapped as a bandit. He was only released and allowed to return to his residence after his identity was clarified and he was vouched for by people from the Third Battalion.
