This Uncle Mo is already 67 years old, but he looks to be in good spirits. Although he was the one in charge of this trip, he stayed in the car the whole way and went directly to the rest area he had found under the protection of bodyguards when he rested.
Li Ke spent most of his time with Mo Bao'er and almost never saw this Uncle Mo come out to give any orders.
He left all the arrangements for the journey to the Mo siblings, making him seem like an elder who didn't like to worry about anything.
"My great-uncle seems a bit aloof and doesn't like to socialize, but when it comes to social situations, he's absolutely in his element and unstoppable. My dad told me that many of the company's business deals were secured by him; there was practically no business he couldn't get when he was involved. However, after my dad took over the family business, my great-uncle retired not long after. I heard that in his resignation letter, he said he didn't want to deal with people anymore and wanted to have some time for himself. Since he said that, my dad couldn't keep him, so he had to let him go." Mo Bao'er sat in front of the fire, telling Li Ke some old stories.
Li Ke held an iron skewer with a small chick, about the size of a palm, stuck in it. This was a secret gift Mo Bao'er had brought out to share with Li Ke.
After the chicken was roasted, Li Ke tore off a chicken leg and handed the rest back to Mo Bao'er: "So it seems your family is taking this matter very seriously, since your great-uncle has come out of seclusion again."
Mo Bao'er nodded: "It is indeed taken very seriously. I heard that the most confidential and important place is the central area of the safe zone, but even our Mo family can't get in there. We newcomers can only choose our place in the outer rings of the safe zone. The current situation is that even if we can't enter the central area, we still have to choose the best place closest to the central area as our future settlement. For such a major event concerning the future development of the Mo family, it's not enough to let the clan feel at ease if only my brother and I take the lead."
Li Ke nodded as he watched Mo Bao'er playing PUBG. She was indeed a bit too young. It wouldn't be very reassuring for her to deal with some old foxes and compete for territory.
The Mo family was among the first to receive the news, and they still have a lot of options. However, they have heard that there are more than a dozen other families with similar or even stronger capabilities than the Mo family.
So even though the pie is big, there are many people vying for it. On the surface, it's all about discussion, but behind the scenes, it's still about who contributes.
The journey took five days, with only one night's rest along the way. Due to the poor road conditions, it took seven days to reach the safe zone, even while traveling at full speed.
Outside the safe zone, Mo Cheng and Mo Bao'er waited with their men for more than two hours before a car finally arrived and drove along the rugged road to pick them up.
If it weren't for the sentry posts and the fact that the code words and landmarks had been checked, many people who arrived wouldn't have believed that this was the so-called safe zone.
The scene before me was utterly desolate; all I could see were ruins and wastelands, with no sign of human habitation whatsoever.
In the distance, you can still see some sinkholes left behind after the natural disaster. This place was obviously abandoned after being destroyed several times and could no longer be sustained.
Mo Bao'er and Li Ke, both dressed in security uniforms, rode motorcycles alongside Mo Cheng and Uncle Mo's vehicles, following the guide vehicle as they drove inside.
Two more hours passed, and it was getting dark. The car finally stopped at an abandoned highway service station, which was another checkpoint.
A man who identified himself as Captain Liu came out to greet them. He led them around the area, introduced the living facilities in each area of the service station, and then told them to make themselves at home.
The accommodation area is a three-story building with two or three large rooms and a very spacious lobby on each floor. Each room has three rows of beds, with ten beds in each row. The beds are bare except for a mattress.
Uncle Mo and his group booked the entire building. The only places Li Ke and his group could move around in were the accommodation area, the leisure area, and the canteen. The canteen had time restrictions and was all charged, including food, gold, or other valuables.
Looking at the accommodations, Uncle Mo sighed, "We paid so much gold, thinking we'd be treated like royalty, but... sigh, we've made everyone suffer."
Those following behind Uncle Mo saw that he had already chosen a spot and had the tents set up. Upon hearing this, they all said that they were not wronged and dared not be wronged.
The leaders had already chosen their places to stay inside the house, so what right did their subordinates have to complain?
Li Ke and Mo Bao'er turned to look at the other rooms. Li Ke asked Mo Bao'er with some curiosity, "How much gold did we pay to book this building?"
Mo Bao'er's expression was somewhat complicated: "Two hundred grams of gold. My father gave my great-uncle fifty kilograms for his use, and so far, my great-uncle has only used two hundred grams."
Li Ke didn't see the problem: "With such poor conditions, two hundred grams is not a small amount."
Mo Bao'er led Li Ke toward the large window and pointed to two buildings in the distance: "That one is made of one kilogram of gold. It has everything inside, and there are people to clean it. That one is made of five kilograms of gold. It not only has everything, but also special relaxation services. I heard that further inside, there is an even more expensive consumption area. My uncle chose the worst, most dilapidated building on the outermost edge for us."
Li Ke was taken aback for a moment before saying, "Your great-uncle is a bit stingy. I was hoping to learn from him and broaden my horizons."
Mo Bao'er laughed and said, "My great-uncle said that big money should be spent on the most important things, and I'd really like to go and see for myself."
It wasn't until dinner that evening that Li Ke learned they were still on the outermost edge of the safe zone, and to get to the innermost reception area, they would have to pass through five checkpoints.
Each post requires an overnight stay before you can set off again the next day. There are no free places, and the further in you go, the more expensive they become.
