After being detained for four hours, Li Ke finally met Xiao Yi. Before meeting him, she had repeatedly speculated that he might be the person in charge of this plan.
But everything truly settled down after I met him.
By this time, Li Ke had already undergone a thorough body search by the female soldiers, and her gender was no longer concealed. As the base commander, she received no special treatment from these soldiers.
Xiao Yi had just come down from the island not long ago, and his body still carried some moisture and the smell of blood. It was almost night outside. When Xiao Yi arrived at the room where Li Ke was being held, Li Ke was dozing by the window with his eyes slightly closed.
Hearing the noise, Li Ke opened his eyes and saw a tall figure walking towards him in the dim light. He was wearing the combat uniform of the island's natives. It wasn't until he took off his hat that Li Ke could see his true face.
After staring at each other for a while, Xiao Yi, who had a bit of a stubble, finally spoke: "Long time no see, Li Ke, or Li Jia."
Li Ke's answer was somewhat of a killjoy: "Not too long ago, I saw him just two months ago."
Xiao Yi's lips seemed to curl slightly. After hearing Li Ke's words, he sat down opposite her, and his physical fatigue seemed to be released all at once.
He said with a hint of helplessness, "Why aren't you staying in the safe zone? What are you doing here? Judging from your behavior, you still don't like getting involved in trouble."
Li Ke briefly told Xiao Yi about his people going missing, and then said, "I would like to meet with someone who knows the inside story, or if you have any information to share with me."
Xiao Yi stared at Li Ke with complicated emotions for a while, while the woman opposite him remained calm, clearly regarding him as just an old acquaintance.
After nearly dying in the past six months, Xiao Yi's mindset has changed. Compared to his current mission, matters between men and women are insignificant. But when he sees Li Ke again, Xiao Yi realizes that she is still somewhat special to him.
Although they have both changed a lot in this life, it can be said that nothing happened between them, and there are no regrets from the previous life.
Thinking of all this, Xiao Yi looked at Li Ke opposite him and couldn't help but feel a little dazed. He once again doubted whether the memories triggered when he was on the verge of death were a beautiful but cruel dream or a parallel world that had actually happened.
But regardless of whether it's true or not, Xiao Yi is quite certain that the person in front of him has never chosen him, whether it's the compromise in the dream or the estrangement in this life.
Xiao Yi felt a mix of regret, relief, and complex emotions. He had actually let go of a lot, and his longing and concern for the person in front of him reached their peak when he died in the dream.
In this life, amidst the threat of death, various memories are intertwined. He has experienced pain and regret. During the long process of physical recovery, he has been trying to convince himself to let go, because he knows that Li Ke does not like it.
In such a world, many unwilling relationships between men and women occur. If it weren't for that overly realistic dream, Xiao Yi might have been a little more insistent when they met again.
But after seeing Li Ke again, Xiao Yi knew that he had no chance. She had grown into the person she wanted to be and did not rely on anyone.
Xiao Yi snapped out of his reverie under Li Ke's questioning gaze, and said with a touch of old friendship, "You know, I'm on a mission right now. If it weren't for the fact that we were teammates, you would have already been sent back."
Li Ke insisted, "I can't have come all this way for nothing, and we can't give away our ransom for nothing either."
Footsteps approached outside the door. Neither of them spoke again. After a knock, someone stood outside and said, "Captain, dinner is ready."
Xiao Yi ordered, "Bring over a double portion. I'll have dinner with Base Chief Li."
Li Ke said with a hint of refusal, "I'm not very hungry, and I don't want to eat yet."
Xiao Yi smiled and said, "Eat a little bit, just to keep me company. We can talk after you've eaten."
Dinner consisted of two large bowls of thick soup that resembled boiled sweet potato chips, and a small basket of coarse grain cakes. Xiao Yi had someone bring in water to wash his hands.
The two of them used the same basin of water. Li Ke noticed that Xiao Yi only washed his left hand, while his right hand was still wearing a black leather glove, which was not normal in such hot weather.
During the meal, Li Ke watched Xiao Yi eat first. He used his left hand, and his movements were skillful, but he ate much slower than before.
Li Ke felt a vague unease in her heart. Xiao Yi in front of her seemed unchanged, yet she felt that he had changed a lot.
He seemed to have lost some of the lone wolf's wildness he used to have, and gained a lot of the casualness and ease of an ordinary person. Thinking of his right hand resting on his knee, Li Ke wondered what had happened to Xiao Yi.
Although I had heard that he seemed to have experienced an extremely dangerous death, when we met again, it was a brief encounter and we were both well, so I didn't think much of it.
Xiao Yi took a few bites before looking at Li Ke: "Why aren't you eating? This soup is very fragrant and sweet; it's a rare delicacy."
Li Ke smiled and said, "This is too big a bowl. I ate something on the way here, and I really can't finish it all. I'll have to share some of it."
While waiting in custody, Li Ke was bored and ate a lot of snacks and pastries. She wasn't hungry at the moment, as she always cherished food and avoided waste.
Since she knew she couldn't finish it, she didn't intend to touch it; leaving it clean meant it could be left for others to eat.
Xiao Yi: "Okay, wait until I cut it in half, then you can eat it."
The two of them are now spending time together in a rare moment of ease and comfort.
After the meal, Xiao Yi asked Li Ke again, "Are you sure you don't want to go back? It's not easy to find out about your companions right now, but as far as I know, quite a few useful people have been sent overseas. It's hard to say whether they can be rescued."
