Chapter 44 Embezzlement

After listening to her mother's words, Chen Jiaojiao remained silent for a while, then changed the subject and asked, "Mom, when is Li Ke coming back? She's been gone for a long time, and it seems she hasn't called home at all. I blame her for failing my exam this time. If she had done her job properly, we wouldn't have needed to hire a new housekeeper, and I wouldn't have suffered this undeserved disaster and ruined my college entrance exam."

As she spoke, Chen Jiaojiao's resentment deepened, as if Li Ke had deliberately sabotaged her by causing her to fail the college entrance examination.

The college entrance examination is such an important event in life. Li Ke, who is such a troublesome person, gave up. Li Zhenzhen never cared about her anyway, so she let her go.

But Jiaojiao is the daughter she has always placed high hopes on and carefully nurtured. Now, due to an unexpected incident during the college entrance examination, she has suffered emotional and physical trauma and will transfer her resentment to Li Ke, which Li Zhenzhen understands.

After being complained about by Chen Jiaojiao, Li Zhenzhen also felt that it was Li Ke's recent restless changes that had caused such trouble at home.

While understanding her feelings, Li Zhenzhen still tried to comfort her daughter, saying, "I know you're upset, but it's a bit far-fetched to drag Li Ke into this. If you're really angry, you can find a way to vent later. There's no need to let her upset you. The most important thing now is to get well soon. Once you're better, I'll take you out for a walk and get your school situation sorted out as soon as possible, so you won't feel so bad anymore."

Meanwhile, after finishing breakfast, Chen Niansheng said goodbye to his family and went to his office in the mall. After sitting for a while, he started walking around the mall, inspecting the counters and warehouses, and it was noon by then.

Just as Chen Niansheng was wondering where to eat, he received a call from his brother-in-law, Zhang Tao, asking where he was. Chen Niansheng told him his location, and Zhang Tao said on the phone that he wanted to come over and have dinner with him.

Chen Niansheng readily agreed, as he had a very good relationship with his brother-in-law. Chen Niansheng and his first wife had supported each other through thick and thin.

At that time, Chen Niansheng's eldest sister was still in the startup phase. Although he and his wife benefited somewhat, they were not as wealthy as they are now.

Later, as the couple gradually built up their business, the wife's health deteriorated, and she passed away before she could enjoy her retirement.

Therefore, Chen Niansheng had deep feelings for his first wife. He also took good care of her family members who remained with him.

Moreover, Zhang Tao, his brother-in-law, and he got along very well, and their relationship did not become estranged because of his wife's departure.

Zhang Tao is still managing a gas station under Chen Niansheng's name. Although Chen Niansheng knows that Zhang Tao is doing some small business there, he doesn't care much as long as it doesn't affect the main business of the gas station.

Chen Niansheng was surprised when he saw Zhang Tao. How could his brother-in-law have lost so much weight in just over half a month?

Chen Niansheng asked with concern, "Brother, what's wrong with you? How come you've changed so much in such a short time? Are you feeling unwell? Why didn't you tell me? If you're really not feeling well, I can help you contact a good doctor for a thorough examination."

Upon hearing his brother-in-law's words of concern, Zhang Tao's eyes immediately reddened. He had been living in fear for so long, and now he finally couldn't hold back any longer and began to pour out his grievances.

"Brother-in-law, you have no idea what I've been through these past two weeks. I haven't been able to eat or sleep properly, and I have nightmares every time I close my eyes. The fact that I'm still alive and here with you is truly a miracle!"

Next, Zhang Tao told Chen Niansheng everything about the robbery and assault that had happened in his home some time ago.

Then she held up her hand, whose wound was still very obvious, for Chen Niansheng to see. Chen Niansheng sighed and said that it was good that she was still alive. As for that little bit of money, he thought it was just a loss to avoid further trouble. As long as she was alright, he was not afraid that he couldn't earn it back.

"Brother-in-law, do you know that my brother really escaped with his life that night? Those people were terrifying. They were incredibly strong and ruthless. They stabbed people without warning. I really thought I was going to die."

After a moment of lingering fear, Zhang Tao followed up on Chen Niansheng's earlier words of concern and mentioned his desire to borrow money to continue running the supermarket.

When his brother-in-law's family encountered such a situation, Chen Niansheng naturally couldn't refuse. Feeling sorry for his brother-in-law who had suffered so much, he directly transferred 500,000 yuan to Zhang Tao so that he could take good care of his health before getting back to work on reopening the supermarket.

After dinner, Chen Niansheng suggested taking Zhang Tao to relax, take a bath, wash his feet, and get rid of the recent bad luck.

Zhang Tao had offended someone for no reason and suffered this great ordeal because of an unknown woman, so he originally didn't really want to go.

But after being persuaded by Chen Niansheng, his mind started to wander again. Moreover, he had been feeling really frustrated lately, so he couldn't help but go with Zhang Tao to a place of entertainment, just to relax.

The two friends spent the entire afternoon at the club, enjoying baths, massages, and foot massages – they ordered the whole package. They even had dinner there.

It wasn't until after 7 or 8 p.m. that Chen Niansheng and Zhang Tao left the club and went home.

On that very day, in the mountains outside the city, the Qingshan Temple, which had been closed for a week, welcomed two important guests late at night.

The two guests were an older man and a younger man. The younger man was wearing a suit, was tall and slender, with his jet-black hair combed back, fair skin, and sharp, bright eyes. He looked very capable.
