Chapter 383 Heartbeat Fluctuations

Li Ke followed Cheng Chenwei to the underground entrance, next to which was a changing area. Cheng Chenwei led Li Ke over and gestured for her to choose a thick, thermal protective suit to put on.

"The underground is an ultra-low temperature laboratory. We must keep warm, otherwise we will all die of hypothermia within three minutes of entering," Cheng Chenwei explained.

Li Ke had already demonstrated her strength to Cheng Chenwei, so she didn't want to hide it any longer. Since her body could withstand the high temperatures of the mine for almost half a month, she wouldn't have much of a problem in low temperatures.

Seeing that Li Ke remained silent, Cheng Chenwei could only take a set of protective clothing herself and ask if she could wear it.

Li Ke felt the other person's heartbeat quicken, and urged him to hurry up. Earlier, she had felt a slight vibration in her chest. Her spatial consciousness said there was a big thing below, a light energy mine with considerable energy, which might help it recover faster.

The two entered the elevator, Cheng Chenwei in front and Li Ke behind. The elevator doors closed, and Cheng Chenwei used her fingerprint to open the button to go to the basement.

In the quiet space, Li Ke suddenly placed her hand on Cheng Chenwei's shoulder and asked in a slightly cool voice, "What are you thinking about?"

Cheng Chenwei's heart almost stopped for a moment. He calmed himself down and asked in a relaxed voice, "Why would Ms. Li ask that? I was just waiting for the elevator to stop."

Li Ke lowered her hand, listened to Cheng Chenwei's heartbeat, hummed softly, and said nothing more.

The elevator doors opened, and Cheng Chenwei walked out. Li Ke was half a step slower. At that moment, something unexpected happened. Just as Li Ke was about to step out of the elevator, she felt something strange at her toes. She pulled her foot back and reached out to grab Cheng Chenwei, who had not yet fully stepped out of the elevator.

But the other person's protective suit had already inflated like an air bubble. Li Ke's fingers only grasped a small, slippery spot on the surface. The next second, a huge attraction pulled Cheng Chenwei out of the elevator quickly.

Li Ke felt a tingling, electric shock in her fingers. She immediately withdrew her hand, and the elevator doors closed rapidly in front of her. All she could see was Cheng Chenwei, who was being sucked to the opposite wall, struggling to take off her protective suit.

Li Ke stood in the elevator, the toes of her shoes were charred, a testament to the power of the electric current, but Cheng Chenwei, wearing protective clothing, seemed to be largely unaffected.

The elevator began to make some mechanical sliding sounds, followed by several clicking sounds, and then four metal bars suddenly descended from all sides, and another bar appeared overhead. Clearly, a cage was being created.

The fence was very dense, with gaps only wide enough for Li Ke to stick her hand out. The material was also very thick and sturdy. Before Li Ke could finish studying it, she felt the space begin to invert. She flipped and jumped, and in the next instant, she was standing on the top of the elevator, which was now the bottom.

Then came another sound of hinges clicking, and Li Ke felt the elevator space being dragged and moved laterally; it seemed she was being transferred.

Not feeling particularly anxious, Li Ke stood quietly in the cage, wanting to see what Cheng Chenwei would do next.

Once all the machine noise stopped, the elevator outside was removed, and a heavy metal cage descended from above, completely enveloping Li Ke. The double metal cage showed how cautious Cheng Chenwei was in treating Li Ke.

The cage was placed in a pure white room. Li Ke could hear occasional painful groans coming from the next room, but the outside temperature was not as low as Cheng Chenwei had said before.

Based on her recent experience of being moved and her new surroundings, she believed she was on the first basement level.

There were very light footsteps outside the door, and a person wearing protective clothing walked in. The person's entire body, including their face, was covered, but Li Ke could hear the person's rapid heartbeat.

Li Ke stared at the other person for two seconds before speaking, "Chen Zhizhi, what are you doing here?"

Chen Zhizhi's heart was pounding because she was terrified. She didn't know why Dr. Cheng had asked her to meet Li Ke, and she had already told him everything she knew.

Her life is stable now, and she has no desire to change the status quo. Looking at Li Ke in the cage, she feels a deep hatred for her, but at the same time, she feels a little sorry for her. No matter what, now that she has fallen into Dr. Cheng's hands, her fate will not be good.

Having witnessed too much bloodshed over the years, Chen Zhizhi has not become cold-blooded. The more she is in such an environment, the more she misses the people and things from the past, whether good or bad.

After all, compared to the current post-apocalyptic survival tactics, the old, childish, bloodless, and harmless methods are really not worth mentioning.

If Li Ke hadn't caused all this trouble, she would genuinely have been willing to help her stay and live a good life.

A notification tone came through the earpiece, and Chen Zhizhi asked as instructed, "And you? What are you doing here? And why did you kidnap Dr. Cheng?"

Hearing Chen Zhizhi's forcedly calm voice, Li Ke simply said, "Just out of curiosity."

Hearing Li Ke's nonchalant and indifferent reply, Chen Zhizhi's anger flared even more.

"If you're curious, why didn't you come find me yourself? Why did you ask me to bring you here? Do you know you've killed me? I still have a child, I still want to live, you're so selfish!" Chen Zhizhi's questioning voice came from inside the protective suit, slightly distorted.

This must have been Chen Zhizhi's own thought; Li Ke did not hear any instructions or commands in her earpiece.

Ignoring Chen Zhizhi's excitement, Li Ke calmly said, "I just happened to run into you, so I took advantage of the situation. It's quite useful."

Chen Zhizhi gritted her teeth: "You deserve to die! Do you know that my son is still waiting for Dr. Cheng to perform surgery on him? I wish I could kill you!"
