Chapter 36 Even after the most intimate physical contact, it is nothing

Seeing Gu Weiyi frowning, Li Wenjing blinked at him twice. He forced a smile and sat down beside her bed.

"You don't think it's too little, do you?"

"What else? I love money, and money loves me. You know that without money, why would I work?"

Li Wenjing joked with him, laughing first, but he remained stern. Perhaps the hospital wasn't the place for jokes; it felt like his melancholy eyes were silently rebuking her—she always ignored him, she never listened to him. Li Wenjing said a few words before breaking off, her laughter fading. Her injured hand began to ache, and she stared at him in silence.

"I want to be with you," he said. "I know what you're worried about: money, work, and your future life. I'll find a way."

"Who knows if you men are better at talking than doing."

Li Wenjing pressed the corners of her mouth, but her eyes were sore. She didn't know whether to laugh or cry. She lowered her head, put away his bank card and passport, held them in her hand, and did not return them to him for a while.

She has always been unwilling to let go of him.

"The question is, are you really willing to come with me? What about your job and your dream?"

He didn't speak for a moment, his face tense as if the skin had shrunk, and then he frowned. Avoiding Li Wenjing's gaze, he said softly, "I... do."

"You don't want to."

After saying this, Li Wenjing smiled at him with a look of relief and said, "I think the stupidest thing is to make a life-changing decision for someone else. If we ever have a fight, you'll blame me, saying it's all because of me. And then you'll run back without a word. I don't want to take on that responsibility."

"Then let's make it clear in advance that I'm an adult and everything is my own decision. I won't blame you."

Li Wenjing still shook her head. "What if you go crazy and can't control your behavior? A lot of things will happen when we live together. Can you guarantee that everything will happen?"

"No, Wenjing, these things haven't happened at all. You just don't believe me."

"To be honest, I don't understand what's going on between us, so I'm worried about you and us," Li Wenjing said. "Maybe I'm more worried about myself. I told you we're different, and you already know it."

"So do you like me?"

She nodded.

"You like me, and I like you too. You are very important to me, and I can't lose you."

"I still say the same thing, don't change yourself for me."

"Is it not possible to change for the one you love? You still don't believe me. I will change and do a lot for you."

She fell silent for a moment. She admitted she liked him, she liked him, but she didn't know how far this relationship had progressed. Relationships were unlike study, work, or any other task; they had clear milestones, and at certain points they could move on to the next. But how could one measure things in a relationship? When did holding hands, kissing, going to bed, become immature, and when did it become mature? When did it become sour? Was it only after a man and a woman had sex that they were considered mature? Was the kiss still the standard? Even the most intimate physical contact was nothing. No matter how strong the connection, there would always be a day when they parted ways. Perhaps in a relationship, people only enjoyed a few moments of intimacy and joy, and she didn't dare to think about the rest of the mess.

He stared at her, waiting for her response. Li Wenjing didn't dare to look into his eyes. Even if she didn't, she could feel the sadness in his eyes, like drizzles, floating around her, surrounding her, and slowly seeping in.

"I do like you," she said, "so I hope you can be happier. I've seen you at your best and at your worst. Whenever you do something you love, you're truly happy, and that's the side of you I want to see most."

He rose from the bed and stood erect before her, tears streaming down his cheeks, past his pursed lips, and onto her hand.

"You should take back what you gave me."

Li Wenjing returned the bank card to him. He reached out to take it, but it was not returned. Li Wenjing covered the card with her hand. He blinked and asked her with a smile: "Do you regret it?"

"A little bit. No one has ever given me a card, so I should at least withdraw the money." After saying that, Li Wenjing moved her hand away. "Take it away quickly, or I'll really regret it."

"You're right. I will make myself better so that you can see me like that every day."

"You said it, promise."

She smiled slyly, and Gu Weiyi sighed, "Look at your hand, it's so injured. I can't make a promise with you."

Both of her hands were wrapped in bandages, with only her fingertips exposed. Her right hand was even in a splint, making it impossible for her to move.

"The nerves in your hand are too complicated. Such a serious injury cannot be sustained. You have to go back to Mombasa for treatment. As soon as your roommate told me that you were in trouble, I rushed here. The doctors and nurses here can't even handle temporary treatment. They left so many injured people outside, which is very likely to cause infection." He grabbed her hand and took out a needle from his bag. Before Li Wenjing could ask him, the needle was inserted into her. After the first shot, she cried out "Ouch".

"What are you doing? It hurts so much."

“Not feeling it is a big problem.”

I switched to my right hand and gave it another injection. "No feeling?"

Now it was his turn to be nervous. After trying twice in a row, Li Wenjing just felt a little numb. She didn't know what the "big problem" he meant, and she laughed at his trembling hands.

"What are you laughing at?"

"It's okay. If this hand can't move, there's still the left. Just pretend it's serious and ask your dad. I'll be satisfied if my company gives me some more compensation."

"Silly." He rarely got angry. "I'm worried about you. Don't say that."

"sorry."

Li Wenjing apologized to him, but he ignored her angrily. He stood in front of her, checked the splint, untied it, and then tied it again. Li Wenjing was so painful that sweat broke out on her face. "It hurts so much! You are taking revenge on me!"

"You know the pain too."

Although his words were harsh, he wiped the sweat from her face and stroked her cheek with his hand, where a warm feeling rested.

"Get up, I'll drive you back, otherwise I won't be at ease."

Li Wenjing's hands were injured and she couldn't put on her shoes, so she just stuffed her feet in casually. Just as she was about to get up, she was held down by Gu Weiyi.

"sit down."

He knelt on one knee in front of Li Wenjing and put her shoes on. His hand went around her ankle, which seemed to be sprained, and he tied the shoelaces.

"Sorry to bother you, are you proposing?"

Gustav's voice came, and looking in the direction of the voice, he was standing at the door looking at the two of them. Li Wenjing felt that there was no smile on his face. The corners of his mouth were habitually raised, with a polite professional perfunctory, and his face was even paler than the large bouquet of white roses in his arms.

"Even if I'm proposing, I need to have a few words with Wen Jing alone." He said, stuffing the flowers in front of Gu Weiyi.

Gu Weiyi didn't answer. He glared at Gustav and said, "Do you know? More than 20 people were injured at your construction site. Even I got here earlier than you. Were you busy buying flowers?"

"I'm here to apologize to Wen Jing. The injured workers will be transferred to Mombasa. You don't have to worry."

Gu Weiyi was about to lose his temper when Li Wenjing stood up, stood in front of him, and gently comforted him, "Go drive first. I need to talk to Gustav. You won't understand the work here."
