Chapter 57 An Unexpected Joy

Chen Wen knelt on the ground, tears welling in her eyes: "Li Ying, I was blind to your talent before and offended you. Please forgive my mistake and treat my grandfather!"

Li Ying looked at Chen Wen with a calm expression: "Everyone in your Chen family is a doctor. Don't you have any way to diagnose your grandfather's illness?"

Chen Wen lowered her head in shame: "I'm not skilled enough to diagnose the problem. We consulted other doctors, and they said that Grandpa has something growing in his head that is incurable."

Li Ying said calmly, "Since that's the case, it's no use you coming to me. I'm a doctor, not a god."

The so-called "bringing someone back to life" requires that the patient has a chance of survival. But for an elderly patient with something growing in their brain, even a miracle worker couldn't save them, let alone her.

“I understand these principles, but my grandfather has been calling your name in his delirium these past few days. I think he must be unable to let go of something and wants to see you. Li Ying, please put aside past grievances and go to the Chen family to hear my grandfather’s heart, please? I beg you!” Chen Wen pleaded desperately.

Li Ying wasn't heartless; she had already said all that, and it would be really unreasonable to insist any further.

"Okay, I'll go with you."

Chen Wen was immediately moved to tears.

Li Ying followed Chen Wen to the Chen family home and went straight into Old Master Chen's bedroom.

The room was filled with a faint scent of herbs.

Chen Wen walked to the bedside and gently called out, "Grandpa, I've invited Li Ying here."

Old Chen opened his eyes slightly and struggled to sit up.

"Mr. Chen, you're fine lying down. Please speak freely." Li Ying showed great respect for her senior.

Old Chen looked haggard and much older. He said to Chen Wen, "Wenwen, go to Grandpa's study and bring me the bookshelf that Grandpa collects."

"good."

Chen Wen got up and went to the study to get something.

Li Ying stood still with her hands at her sides, looking at Old Chen's full head of white hair, and couldn't help but feel a pang of pity.

Everyone will reach old age someday, but the desolation of old age is the most heartbreaking.

However, no one can stop this natural law.

Old Chen leaned against the bedside, his eyes cloudy.

"Li Ying, you've probably heard about my condition."

"Professor Chen is a leading figure in the medical field; surely he has a method to treat himself?"

Old Chen smiled bitterly: "You're wrong. My reputation for seeking fame and fortune is all fake."

Li Ying listened quietly.

“You mentioned my grandfather, and I am ashamed. My father devoted himself to promoting traditional Chinese medicine, and my mother established a family rule that all members of the Chen family must learn traditional Chinese medicine in order to ensure its inheritance. Unfortunately, I am not very talented and cannot learn traditional Chinese medicine. Over the years, people have respected me as Elder Chen, which is all due to the good reputation left by my parents.”

Old Chen took a breath, and Chen Wen walked in carrying a sandalwood box.

"Open it," Old Chen commanded.

Chen Wen opened the box, inside were several thread-bound ancient Chinese books.

“This is…” Chen Wen’s eyes lit up as she looked at Old Chen.

Li Ying looked inside; the box contained ancient medical books that had already been lost.

“These are ancient medical books that my parents collected. I’m giving them to you.”

What?

Li Ying was shocked.

She and Old Chen had only met by chance and had no interaction whatsoever. In fact, she and Chen Wen didn't get along. Yet Old Chen actually wanted to give her these valuable gifts.

“Old Chen, I think you should pass these medical books on to your descendants.”

Li Ying is not a greedy person; she never likes to take things that don't belong to her.

Old Chen nodded slightly. “You’re right, that’s the rule in our Chen family. But since me, no one in our Chen family has been a good doctor. My son gave up medicine for literature, my grandsons and the others looked down on it and went to join the army. Only Wenwen wanted to please me and chose to study medicine. But she’s not very bright. She can study Western medicine, but she can’t study traditional Chinese medicine.”

Chen Wen was upset that her grandfather had made her sound completely worthless in front of outsiders.

“Li Ying, since you’ve heard about my parents’ story, you must be destined to meet them. These ancient books should be given to people who can understand them, not left to gather dust in boxes,” Old Chen said earnestly.

Li Ying looked at those ancient books. To be honest, ancient books are difficult to understand. People who are not careful and serious cannot learn them. It is really not easy to find someone who can understand them.

Chen Wen turned to look at Li Ying: "This is my grandfather's long-cherished wish. Li Ying, please agree to my grandfather's request and accept these ancient books."

Chen Wen was quite self-aware; she knew she couldn't understand these books, otherwise her grandfather would have already taken them out for her to study.

"I can accept these books, but I have one condition: please accept me as your grandson, Elder Chen!"

Li Ying already has a master, so she can't take on another master. But since Old Chen's intentions are so sincere, it would be reasonable for her to become Old Chen's goddaughter and take these ancient books.

Old Chen's eyes lit up, and he raised his trembling hand, asking incredulously, "Really? You really want to be my granddaughter?"

"really!"

Old Chen may not have accomplished anything great, but his profound understanding of righteousness is enough for her to call him "Grandpa" herself.

Old Chen sobbed uncontrollably: "Alright, alright, Wenwen, go and call Aunt Yang to help me get ready. I want to acknowledge this granddaughter today. Go and publish an article in the newspaper to announce it to the world."

Chen Wen nodded.

In the Chen family's living room, Old Master Chen sat in high spirits as Li Ying respectfully served him tea.

"Grandpa, please have some tea!"

Tears streamed down Old Chen's face as he trembled as he accepted the teacup.

"Alright, my dear grandson, Grandpa will have some tea."

Old Chen took a sip of tea, and then solemnly handed the sandalwood box to Li Ying.

Chen Wen personally saw Li Ying off at the door.

"Li Ying, don't forget, we still have a competition at the end of the year!" Chen Wen's tone was no longer so arrogant.

Li Ying smiled faintly: "I won't forget, but let me remind you, your Academician Cao is not a good person."

For the sake of the ancient book, Li Ying sincerely offered a reminder before striding away.

Chen Wen fell into deep thought.

Academician Cao really offended Li Ying quite a bit!

Li Ying returned to the courtyard house with the box in her arms, but the scene before her eyes instantly soured her mood.

In the courtyard, Ye Jingchi and Jing Yingyan, who was sitting in a wheelchair, were locked in a battle of wits.

"Commander Ye, you're blocking my sun!" Jing Yingyan raised an eyebrow and curled his lips, looking arrogant.

Ye Jingchi coldly rebuked, "Commander Jing is joking. This sun doesn't belong to me alone; I can't block it."

Jing Yingyan gripped the watering can in his hand, a smile playing on his lips: "Commander Ye should understand that some love is like sand; the tighter you hold it, the faster it slips away."

"Commander Jing should understand that some feelings are destined to be, and no one can destroy them at will."

Li Ying could hear the tension in their words. She rubbed her forehead and was about to speak when Hua Chenyue came over carrying a pot of flowers.

"Sister Yingying, what do you think of this potted rose?"
