Li Ying was completely baffled by this, but she was certain of one thing: the Nan family was not as peaceful as it seemed on the surface. This also explained why Nan Shiran was so difficult to track down. If the Nan family had really abandoned Nan Shiran, she shouldn't have been able to act so arrogantly. But with the Nan family backing her up, it was a different story.
That evening, when Ye Jingchi returned home, Li Ying told him what she had said and asked for his thoughts.
"I think your judgment is correct. The Nan family is definitely not as peaceful as the confession seems. However, we can't find any leverage against the Nan family for the time being, so we can only take action from the side."
Li Ying also knew that thoroughly investigating the Nan family was a dangerous thing. Jing Yingyan couldn't do it, and neither could they. So they could only start from that place.
"Who exactly is the local tyrant in Jiangcheng?"
"They have influence around the station area, as well as in the coal yard and some parts of the mine. Jing Yingyan was ambushed when he went to the mine last time."
"Is it easy to investigate?"
Ye Jingchi shook his head: "They're too scattered, it's not easy to investigate, but we'll try our best to find the leaders of these people."
"The thief must first capture the leader. Only by finding the leader can we wipe them all out in one fell swoop."
Hearing a noise at the door, Ye Jingchi got up and opened it.
Diudiu stood in the living room, holding a water cup in her little hands, and said timidly, "I want to drink water."
"If you want to drink water in the future, you can call Aunt Lan. You're so small, it wouldn't be good if you hurt your hand." Ye Jingchi patted Diudiu's head.
Diudiu put down her water glass and ran back to her room.
Li Ying stood at the door, watching Diudiu close the door, and then pulled Ye Jingchi back to the room.
"Go to sleep."
Ye Jingchi nodded.
They knew that Diudiu was a very strange child, but they preferred to believe that the child was not a bad child.
In the morning, Alan took Diudiu and Chenchen to the market to buy groceries. On the way, they ran into Sister Xiumei, who was very friendly. She picked up Chenchen and went home with Alan.
As I walked down the street, I came across some music and dancing.
Alan asked curiously, "What are you doing?"
Sister-in-law Xiumei said, "This is an elderly man on this street who is celebrating his 90th birthday. The whole street went to congratulate him. Isn't it exciting? Let me tell you, people in Jiangcheng value family very much. Every household has an ancestral hall, and people with the same surname hold ancestral worship ceremonies every year."
"Aren't there a lot of people?"
"Yes, there are many people. There are many people for each surname. As long as you have the same surname, you can sit down and eat when you arrive."
Xiumei's sister-in-law loved to join in such fun, but after being scolded by her husband a few times, she stopped doing it.
"Everyone, everyone, I am very grateful that you have graced us with your presence to celebrate the old man's birthday. Today, everyone who comes to my house will be treated to good food and drink, and I guarantee you will leave satisfied."
The speaker was a middle-aged man, broad-shouldered and burly, tall and imposing, with a pair of small, shrewd eyes, yet he spoke with great eloquence.
"Auntie, I want to eat meat." Diudiu shook Alan's hand.
Chenchen nodded, "It smells so good! Chenchen wants to eat meat too."
Sister-in-law Xiumei laughed and said, "That won't do. We have no relation to them, how can we join in this fun?"
Diudiu was very disappointed. She let go of Alan's hand, ran to the man's side, stretched out her little hand, and said something. The man gave her a handful of candy.
Diudiu ran back and gave Chenchen a few.
Alan and Sister-in-law Xiumei didn't stay long and returned to their apartment building.
Li Ying was so pregnant that she slept a lot. When she woke up, Alan had already prepared the meal.
"Alan, remember to call me next time, I'll go out with you guys."
Sleeping all the time isn't a solution.
"Okay, I'll remember to call you next time. I just went out to buy groceries and ran into Sister-in-law Xiumei, and also saw a birthday banquet being held on the street, there were so many people. But let me tell you, in my hometown, they don't celebrate birthdays like that, it's said that if someone does, they'll die." Alan wasn't exaggerating, in her hometown, it really is true that if someone does celebrate a birthday like that, they'll die.
In the last two years, life has gotten better, and some people have become arrogant after making some money. They like to go through all sorts of formalities, like organizing a birthday banquet for their elderly relatives. But as a result, the elderly person is sure to die a few days later, as if a curse has been placed on them.
"Is it possible that they knew the elderly person's health wouldn't hold up for much longer, so they held the event in advance to let the elderly person have some fun?"
This is Li Ying's idea.
“That should be the case.” Alan thought Li Ying’s words made sense.
Just after finishing her meal, a soldier in military uniform ran up to Li Ying and told her something.
"Sister-in-law, Commander Ye is injured and in the hospital, but don't worry, he's fine."
Li Ying was also taken aback upon hearing this. She had only just arrived in Jiangcheng and had already been injured, which showed that the forces here were indeed extraordinary.
Li Ying told Alan to take good care of the child at home, and she went to the hospital to check on Ye Jingchi's condition.
Ye Jingchi was shot in the arm, but otherwise unharmed.
"Are you alright?" Li Ying sat down and took Ye Jingchi's hand.
"It's nothing. I was shot in the arm, but luckily I reacted quickly and dodged it."
Ye Jingchi reassured him, "Don't worry, I'm fine. It was just an accident."
"Commander, this is no accident. You've been targeted by those people," the soldier said.
Ye Jingchi glared at Xiaobing, "Don't scare his wife, okay?"
Li Ying wasn't afraid; she just felt that these people were everywhere.
"Your whereabouts aren't kept secret, so how did anyone find out?"
Ye Jingchi smiled and said, "Once you come to Jiangcheng, there's no way to keep your whereabouts secret. They're everywhere. They probably even know how many times you go to the toilet."
That's terrible.
