Chapter 95 Using a borrowed knife to kill
"Lord Ap, Gin is coming!" the secretary reported urgently to Maitai.
"How could it be so fast?!"
Mai Tai never expected that the man would send someone so hastily. And the person who came was none other than Gin, the organization's infamous assassin.
Bourbon's obituary was issued the day after his "death," the cause of death being an accidental fall into a swamp on his return journey, while Kiel had already been beheaded and his body displayed publicly.
"Could it be that Gin is here to handle Bourbon's funeral arrangements?"
The answer is definitely no; it would be more accurate to say that Gin came to handle Mai Tai's funeral arrangements.
"How did that gentleman know? The communications were clearly intercepted!" Mai Tai couldn't understand.
"According to our scouts, the blond man didn't come alone; he left two men in a nearby village," the secretary said.
Since Bourbon entered Maitai's territory, he hadn't contacted the two whiskey underlings again. The two waited and waited, but Bourbon didn't appear, and they grew increasingly impatient, so they proactively asked the man for instructions. Unfortunately, their report and Maitai's announcement of the obituary happened on the same day.
The gentleman deduced from this that Bourbon's death was likely not accidental, but rather a result of some mishap. Given Bourbon's track record, it was unlikely he would remain completely silent for so long.
Maitai is lying, so what could have caused this usually loyal subordinate to betray his master?
Meanwhile, the clue provided by Gin, who was hunting down Scotland, gave the man a lead. Gin reported that Scotland had entered Colombian territory and was most likely hiding deep in the rainforest.
Furthermore, based on the network location of the game login, the little detective who is always associated with Scotland is also in Maitai's territory.
All indications suggest that it was highly likely that Scotland and Mettel conspired to kill Bourbon.
Gin was ordered to first find Bourbon's two remaining whiskey underlings and learn about the local situation. Especially after hearing the rumor that Maitai had sent a woman to his nemesis, Gin became increasingly certain that Maitai had betrayed him. That old bastard had not only killed Bourbon but also let Kiel escape.
"Brother, what should we do now?" Vodka asked. "The rainforest terrain is complicated, and Maitai has the home-field advantage, so it might not be easy to make a move."
Gin sneered, "Hmph! What's so difficult about that? Just let him come out on his own, won't it?"
Hiding in the village, Mai Tai was filled with anxiety and desperately wanted to ask Cat Whiskers for advice. But when he heard that Gaddon's stronghold had been wiped out by the CIA, his last hope was dashed.
All these years, it was only because of that gentleman's support that Maitai was able to gain a foothold in this dog-eat-dog world. Originally, he only killed Bourbon because he was afraid that Bourbon would ruin things and affect his relationship with that gentleman. Who knew that his plan would backfire and bring about his own death!
Maitai sat there blankly, looking worried, when suddenly his secretary ran over excitedly and said, "Lord Apoo, it's a misunderstanding! We've misunderstood! Gin wasn't coming for you."
Mai Tai's spirits lifted: "Oh? What's he here for?"
"Gin sent a message saying that he came to hunt down Scotland, a traitor in the organization. They have reliable intelligence that Scotland is active in this area and hope that we can provide assistance."
Mai Tai was overjoyed: "Why not? You go and pick some people, and I'll personally lead them to welcome Gin."
Just as Mai Tai and his secretary were busy making arrangements, Little Coffee Bean ran over in a soft, sweet voice and begged, "Daddy, I want some milk candy—"
"There's no milk candy here. How about some fruit? Would you like a banana?"
"No, I want milk candy! I want the kind that big brother gives me."
Which older brother is it?
"That blond guy who's really handsome! I can't see him anymore!"
"That older brother went back."
"Really? But that's not what he told me." Little Coffee Bean blinked, still doubtful.
Mai Tai asked in shock, "When did he tell you?!"
"Last night, after I fell asleep, my older brother suddenly appeared and said he 'died with his eyes wide open' (meaning he died with regrets)." Little Coffee Bean asked innocently, "Daddy, what does 'died with his eyes wide open' mean? It's such a difficult word, I don't understand!"
Mai Tai was terrified, his face ashen, and he asked tremblingly, "Good child, what else did he say to you in your dream?"
"Big brother also said that someone will soon come to take Daddy's life!" Little Coffee Bean imitated perfectly, asking loudly, "Daddy, what does 'take his life' mean?"
"This... means..." Mai Tai felt his knees go weak and he almost fell to the ground.
"As expected, Gin came to kill me!"
Come to think of it, why would an organized traitor come to his remote mountain forest? It's nothing more than an excuse to lure the snake out of its hole.
The secretary asked with a troubled expression, "Lord Apoo, what should we do now? What about Gin...?"
"Let me calm down! Let's think of a plan and agree on a story: Bourbon died by accident after stepping into the swamp. We absolutely cannot let a word of it slip out! As long as we keep our mouths shut, even if Gin has all the connections in the world, he won't be able to find anything out."
"Daddy, is there still no milk candy?" Little Coffee Bean was so aggrieved that she was about to cry.
"Sweetie, Daddy has something to do. I have to go out for a bit, but I'll buy you some milk candy when I get back, okay?"
"But Daddy won't be coming back."
"How could that be?"
"That older brother told me he would wait for my dad, and that you two would meet soon. But when my dad went to see that older brother, he never saw me again." Little Coffee Bean started crying as she spoke, crying so sadly!
Mai Tai was disturbed by the crying. Many people say that children have the ability to see ghosts and can see things that adults cannot.
"Could it be that Bourbon really became a vengeful spirit and lingers here after his death?"
Mai Tai felt a chill run down his spine.
"Daddy, I want to play games. Will you play hide-and-seek with me?" Little Coffee Bean started acting cute again.
The secretary had a sudden inspiration: "That's right, we can hide! Even if Gin finds his way here, he's not familiar with this area. Lord Apoo, let's hide in the woods for a while. As long as we're alive, we can always find another way!"
"What will we do after offending that gentleman?"
"Let's take it one step at a time. Now that Geddon has also lost power, our situation isn't too bad."
Mai Tai hesitated, unable to make up his mind. Just then, another spy came to report that Gin had discovered that the woman Mai Tai had given to Gardon was a CIA agent.
Now that things had come to this, Maitai had no way out. Since he had lied about Kiel, the credibility of his testimony regarding Bourbon's death was greatly diminished.
"Lord Apoo, let's run! If we don't leave now, Gin will come after us!" the secretary pleaded desperately.
Mai Tai no longer hesitated and ordered everyone to pack their bags and prepare to leave: leave behind large items, take only personal necessities, and travel light.
Later, when Jingguang asked Conan why he insisted on saving Maitai from Gin, the young detective replied, "They are all bad people, but double-crossing is not the way I want to seek justice. Killing Maitai would be pointless; he is just a puppet supported by that man."
However, sparing Mai Tai's life this time doesn't mean Conan really wants to let him go.
Just as Maitai and the others were preparing to leave, they were shocked to find that Keke was missing! They searched everywhere but couldn't find her, which greatly worried Maitai.
In reality, the young detective was photocopying stacks of crime files in Maitai's basement. Due to Maitai's distrust of modern technology, he wrote down all the important information on paper, the most important of which were various lists.
The young detective discovered the underground room on the day the two police officers left. He had already made many copies over the years, and today he had to copy the rest.
However, Conan underestimated Gin's anger, and also underestimated the man's navigation system. The silver-haired killer arrived faster than he expected.
Mai Tai couldn't find his beloved son anywhere, and finally left after much persuasion from his secretary. No sooner had Mai Tai left than Gin led his men into the village.
Upon seeing the deserted village, Gin immediately ordered: "Burn it!"
Smelling the smoke, Conan knew he couldn't stay there any longer. He grabbed the last uncopied list and all his belongings and quickly escaped through another exit of the secret room.
The panicked young detective, having entered the jungle, had no idea where to go. He randomly chose a path and ran as fast as he could, heading away from the thick smoke.
After running some distance, the young detective suddenly realized he hadn't contacted Bourbon and Scotland about the gin. But it was too late: they weren't in the service area. Fortunately, Bourbon was well-informed and already knew about it.
Holding his phone with no signal, Conan was frantic, realizing he was lost, just like Bourbon, who was new to the area.
The kitten nimbly climbed the tree, trying to find the sun's location through the dense shade. He was pleasantly surprised to find that walking in the tree was easier than walking on the ground.
So the kitten transformed into Tarzan, stepping on tree branches and holding vines, leaping lightly through the forest.
However, just when the future seemed bright, a dark figure suddenly appeared in front of him.
The kitten was startled and slipped, falling from the branch. But luckily, it didn't hit the ground; instead, it was caught by a long, strong arm and suspended in mid-air.
"Little kitten, you run fast! I've been looking for you everywhere!" Conan looked up and saw a dark, unfamiliar face on the tree. The person spoke quickly and urgently, and Conan, a complete novice in Spanish, couldn't understand a single word before being unceremoniously lifted up by the other person.
Conan didn't know the other person's identity, but he could tell from their clothing that they were neither a member of the organization nor a member of Maitai's group.
The dark-skinned young man mumbled a string of words that Conan couldn't understand, then carried the little boy on his back and ran off like the wind.
Conan was bewildered, unsure of the other person's intentions. But the person seemed very familiar with the area, moving with incredible speed. Conan thought that getting out of this awful place was all that mattered. So he obediently climbed onto the person's back without resistance.
The situation was quite dangerous. Conan felt several times that the branches and vines coming towards him were about to hit his face, but they were all just false alarms.
However, looking back, I feel a unique beauty: from dusk until nightfall, the forest slowly sheds its golden veil and is tinged with silvery-blue hues.
The moment Conan burst out of the jungle, he looked up and saw a clear moon: a full moon.
A ship was moored at the dock. The man finally put the little boy down, pointed to a man in a sailor uniform in front of him, and said a few more words in gibberish.
"Little friend, are you Joseph Ferris?" the person in the sailor uniform asked.
"Who are you?" the little boy asked timidly. He didn't recognize the person in front of him either: Where did those two policemen go?
“I’m the captain. Your father sent me to pick you up,” the captain replied, pulling out a letter. “Your father couldn’t come, so he entrusted me to take care of you. This is the letter he sent to you.”
By the moonlight, the young detective carefully read the long letter full of coded messages twice, finally figuring out the clues. He said to the captain, "I understand, thank you. Shall we leave now?"
The captain nodded and carried the little boy onto the boat. Conan waved to the young man on the shore from afar and shouted, "Thank you, goodbye!"
Bourbon did not mention the man's name in his letter, and Conan later learned that the man's nickname was Little Rusty.
The ship sped along the wide Orinoco River, heading towards the Atlantic Ocean. Starlight, scattered and fragmented, danced on the ripples. The moonlit forest was serene and majestic.
Conan leaned on the deck railing, taking one last, wistful look, and whispered, "Goodbye, Columbia."
