Chapter 2 Circumventing the Great Firewall
Chapter Summary: Please, have some decency!
Chen Huimei glared at Fu Xianyin, puzzled, but ultimately said nothing more.
Fu Xianyin glanced at the homeroom teacher next to her and breathed a sigh of relief. Then she said to her, "Come on, Fu Xianyin, go into the classroom and find a seat first. I'll take you to get your books later."
Fu Xianyin nodded obediently and followed the homeroom teacher into the classroom.
There were about forty students in the classroom, and the only empty seat was occupied by the teacher's right-hand man next to the podium. The homeroom teacher glanced around and quickly made a decision:
"Lin Anxu, come here and sit down."
The whole class burst into laughter. The boy next to Gu Linzhao packed his bag dejectedly, his voice listless: "Sister Gao, I just moved down this morning."
Gao Ying showed no mercy: "At this rate, you'll have to move it up again sooner or later. Hurry up and stop dawdling."
Lin Anxu slowly moved to the right protector's seat, and Gao Ying patted Fu Xianyin's shoulder: "Fu Xianyin, you can sit in Lin Anxu's seat. Class monitor, remember to tell the new students the school rules and regulations."
Fu Xianyin let out a soft "ah".
No wonder, it turns out Gu Linzhao is the class monitor.
After the seats were arranged, Teacher Gao then helped Fu Xianyin get her textbooks and school uniform. Fu Xianyin's schoolbag was full, and she was even carrying a bag that Teacher Gao had found for her.
"My office is on the third floor at the east end. You can come directly to me if you have any problems."
Fu Xianyin nodded.
She returned home after class had ended. This was the last class of the afternoon, after which it was dinner time, and then she would return at seven o'clock for evening self-study.
When Fu Xianyin returned to the classroom, Gu Linzhao was not in his seat. Lin Anxu saw her and waved, "Beautiful sister?"
Fu Xianyin smiled and said, "Hmm?"
Lin Anxu: "Gu Linzhao has something to do tonight. He asked Sister Gao for leave from evening self-study this morning, but Sister Gao might have forgotten. Can you add me on WeChat first, and then I'll send Gu Linzhao to you later."
Fu Xianyin nodded: "Okay."
After exchanging greetings with their friend, Lin Anxu finished explaining Gu Linzhao's instructions and then asked Fu Xianyin, "If there's anything I can help you with, just let me know. It's always a good time."
Lin Anxu had a good personality, and Fu Xianyin was in a good mood because of him. After Lin Anxu finished speaking, he went to the cafeteria to eat. Fu Xianyin wasn't hungry, so she took the key that the homeroom teacher had given her and went back to the dormitory.
Fu Dongyuan, being rich, managed to get Fu Xuanyin a single room, no one knows what he said to the principal. The dormitory was very nice, even with a private washing machine and a separate wet and dry bathroom.
The bedding was provided by the school and had a faint musty smell. It wouldn't dry even if washed at this time of day, so Fu Xianyin just threw her school uniform into the washing machine.
While doing laundry, she cleaned the entire dormitory room inside and out.
After cleaning and washing most of the clothes, Fu Xianyin took a breath and then decided to go buy some things.
This trip was so rushed that Fu Xianyin didn't even have time to pack her clothes. She was pulled onto the plane by Chen Huimei early in the morning and then arrived in City B.
So now that she's in the dormitory and facing living on campus, Fu Xianyin belatedly realizes that she doesn't have any underwear to change into that night.
She hung her school uniform up to dry, and her phone rang as soon as she stepped out of the dormitory.
Fu Xianyin hesitated for a moment when she saw the name "Chen Huimei," but finally answered the call.
On the other end of the phone, Chen Huimei's tone was as bitter as ever: "Yinyin, your dad has gone out to fool around again. He can't even stay still for a few hours. How are we supposed to live like this?"
Fu Xianyin said in a low voice, "Mom, Fu Dongyuan's company headquarters is here. Maybe he went to the company."
Chen Huimei's voice suddenly became shrill: "What do you mean, 'go to the company'! Go to a damn company! He's just going to fool around! Who knows how many more women he'll be seeing!"
"Yinyin." Chen Huimei seemed to be crying, her voice hoarse, each thud making Fu Xianyin's head buzz: "I'm counting on you, you must live up to my expectations, your dad's company must eventually be yours."
“Fu Dongyuan is unreliable, but you have to be reliable. Mom is really counting on you for the rest of her life.”
Chen Huimei's voice was like an impenetrable net, enveloping Fu Xianyin completely without leaving any gaps.
Why is it always like this?
Fu Xianyin thought.
She felt somewhat powerless.
Chen Huimei was still accusing Fu Dongyuan, and the phone call seemed to have no end.
She wouldn't listen to Fu Xianyin's advice or comfort, ignoring all possible facts, and focused solely on accusing Fu Dongyuan of his actions.
The sky seemed to darken suddenly, leaves drifted down, landing on Fu Xianyin's head. She picked off the slightly yellowed leaf, her voice calm:
"Chen Huimei, are you ever going to stop?"
There was a moment of silence on the other end of the phone, and Fu Xianyin spoke before Chen Huimei could unleash another scream:
"Please, I'm begging you, divorce Fu Dongyuan, okay?"
Unexpectedly, Chen Huimei did not continue shouting.
She murmured to herself, her voice so low that Fu Xianyin didn't hear her clearly before the call was disconnected.
Because of Chen Huimei's delay, Fu Xianyin completely missed the time to leave the school.
The gatekeeper wouldn't let her out because she didn't have a leave slip. Fu Xuanyin had no choice but to go find her homeroom teacher, but the teacher wasn't there that night either. She searched around but couldn't find anyone who could help her get out of the school.
Fu Xianyin couldn't get through to Chen Huimei or Fu Dongyuan by phone. She sat under the school wall and glanced at the camera overhead.
Five minutes later, Fu Xianyin ignored the ringing of her phone in her pocket and straddled the wall.
Fu Xianyin was getting annoyed by someone bombarding her with messages. Just as she was about to climb over the wall, a familiar voice suddenly rang out:
"Fu Xianyin?"
Fu Xianyin looked down and saw Gu Linzhao standing under the wall, holding his school uniform jacket and looking up at her.
The scene became awkward at one point.
Fu Xianyin's shirt dress was a bit wrinkled. Although the dress was long enough to reach her calves and wouldn't reveal anything when she climbed over a wall, it was still not very elegant.
Gu Linzhao turned his head away and coughed, "You come down first."
Fu Xianyin nimbly jumped off the wall and dusted off her skirt.
Gu Linzhao looked at her expressionlessly: "Did you read the school rules and regulations I sent you?"
Fu Xianyin: ?
She took out her phone and saw that Gu Linzhao had sent a bunch of messages after accepting her friend request.
Three pictures of school rules and regulations, along with two supplementary texts.
One rule is: [The last sentence in the last picture, which wasn't clearly captured, means that using a VPN is prohibited.]
The other rule is that [the class monitor will deduct points from classmates according to the point deduction system.]
pretty.
Not only did they step on a landmine, they stepped on two landmines at once.
Fu Xianyin felt that she was really suited to go to Vietnam to dig out landmines.
Her mind was racing, and Gu Linzhao was also not very calm.
School rules and regulations are actually quite similar across schools, so Gu Linzhao didn't think that being two minutes late in sending them would be a problem.
Although he didn't think Fu Xianyin was a particularly well-behaved person, what kind of trouble could she possibly cause while studying in the evening at school?
As it turned out, he underestimated Fu Xianyin.
She really knows how to cause trouble.
There was a brief moment of silence between them. Fu Xianyin then realized what was happening. She took two steps forward, stood under the streetlight, and raised her phone, saying, "Class monitor, I can explain."
Before Gu Linzhao could speak, she quickly said, "I came to Beichuan in a hurry, and I didn't bring any clothes or anything. The bedding won't be dry even if I wash it now. I don't even have anything to stay at school tonight."
She opened the chat history and saw two missed calls from Fu Dongyuan and Chen Huimei: "I called my parents, but they didn't answer. My homeroom teacher wasn't at school either, and the gatekeeper wouldn't let me leave the school. Climbing over the wall was really the worst possible option."
Gu Linzhao remained silent.
Fu Xianyin sighed: "Class monitor, could you please be lenient about deducting points?"
"cannot."
Gu Linzhao frowned slightly and decisively refused.
Fu Xianyin knew that her impartial deskmate would be difficult to talk to, so she raised the corners of her lips and swung her ponytail: "It's not that I won't deduct points, points will definitely be deducted, but could you please change it for me for this reason?"
She counted on her fingers for examples: "For instance, changing it to not handing in homework, or being late for class, etc."
This request was a bit strange, and Gu Linzhao glanced at her with slight surprise.
Fu Xianyin stood there openly and without any attempt to conceal herself.
Gu Linzhao neither said it was good nor bad.
The atmosphere between the two was slightly tense. After about half a minute, Fu Xianyin couldn't help herself. She glanced at the time and sighed, "Fine, deduct it then. Class monitor, you decide. I have to go buy something. The mall will be closing soon if I'm late."
Gu Linzhao, who had been looking down, raised his eyes after hearing her words and said, "I'll go with you."
Fu Xianyin's eyes widened slightly.
Gu Linzhao's voice was flat, sounding devoid of emotion: "I have a leave slip, you don't. How do you plan to get back to the dorm after you go shopping? Are you going to climb over the wall again?"
Fu Xianyin wasn't stupid: "But class monitor, one person's leave slip can't be used for two people, right?"
She took a step forward and looked up at Gu Linzhao: "Is the class monitor planning to lead the way in breaking school rules?"
Gu Linzhao chuckled: "No, I just want to see where you plan to climb back over the wall to get back to the dorm, and then I'll add that to my record."
Fu Xianyin: ...
You're so ruthless.
She suddenly started arguing with Gu Linzhao: "Then I'm not going back tonight."
Gu Linzhao even nodded: "Okay, then leaving the school without permission will be reported to the whole school."
Fu Xianyin: ...
Oh shit.
She gave up arguing with Gu Linzhao and resolved to study the school rules and regulations of Beichuan No. 1 Middle School properly from now on.
"They're gone."
Gu Linzhao waved, and a taxi had stopped by the roadside sometime earlier. Gu Linzhao raised his chin and said, "Get in, let's go buy something."
Fu Xianyin did not refuse and got into the car from the back seat.
The car quickly stopped in front of a shopping mall. Gu Linzhao glanced at his phone and said, "Buy whatever you want yourself. I'm not going in with you. Is an hour and a half enough?"
Fu Xianyin nodded: "That's enough."
Gu Linzhao: "Then go back at nine o'clock. I'll wait for you here. Call me if you can't find me."
"Okay." Fu Xianyin thought for a moment and said sincerely, "Thank you, class monitor."
Gu Linzhao: "You're welcome. Remember to think about how to write your self-criticism when you get home tonight."
Fu Xianyin was taken aback: "Isn't it only required 10 points to write a self-criticism? Climbing the wall is 8 points, and I'm still 2 points short."
Gu Linzhao: "Leaving school without permission at night is 10 points, so it adds up to 18."
"Should these two be counted together?" Fu Xianyin frowned. "That's unreasonable. Climbing over the wall at night is definitely considered leaving school without permission, so these two should be counted together, not added as a separate item."
She clicked on the picture, swiped it twice, and said, "Class monitor, it says here that anyone who provides constructive suggestions for the class rules can get two extra points."
"Leaving the school grounds without climbing over the wall is 10 points. If you add two more points, I only lost eight points now, so I don't need to write a self-criticism."
The girl's gaze was fixed, her clear eyes reflecting the lights of the nighttime shopping mall.
Her rosy lips parted and closed: "Class monitor, please, have some decency."
