Chapter 35 Frustrated [VIP]
Chapter Summary: Fu Xianyin, are you throwing a tantrum at me?
Whether it was Fu Xianyin's imagination or not, physical education class seemed like a watershed moment.
Previously, the sports meet was just something people talked about, but after PE class, everyone would actually go to the playground to practice after evening self-study.
After evening self-study, Xu Xinyu packed her bag early and came to find Fu Xianyin as the bell rang:
"Fu Xianyin, don't forget we have training tonight."
Fu Xianyin paused in her writing.
If Xu Xinyu hadn't mentioned it, she would have completely forgotten.
She said, "Okay, wait for me a moment, I'll finish this problem."
Xu Xinyu said, "It's okay, no rush."
She had a very clear approach to this problem, and once she started writing, she basically didn't stop.
After finishing writing, she began packing her schoolbag.
Yin Zexuan was still struggling with his physics test when Fu Xianyin said goodbye before leaving. He had also overheard Xu Xinyu's words, so he asked:
"Do you go to the playground with them to practice relays?"
Fu Xianyin bent down to rummage through her notebook and said, "Yes, are you going to the playground?"
Yin Zexuan shook his head: "I'm not going. I'm going straight back to the dorm. I didn't sign up for any projects."
There are more boys than girls, so there are never any events that aren't filled. Gao Ying doesn't force students like Yin Zexuan, who aren't particularly interested in sports, to participate in events.
Fu Xianyin sighed, "I'm envious. I'm leaving now. See you tomorrow."
Cheng Zhaozhao and Chen Nianke also had projects, so the group went to the playground together.
Lin Anxu signed up for the men's 200-meter race and trained with Cheng Zhaozhao. Chen Nianke mainly came to the playground to get some fresh air; practicing the long jump was secondary for her.
Chen Nianke sat down with a smile at the sports equipment area, stretched, and said, "You guys go ahead and practice, I'm going to rest for a bit."
Before Fu Xianyin could react, Gu Linzhao was the only one left beside her.
She belatedly looked at the person next to her and asked, "You also signed up for a project? I thought you were like Yin Zexuan and didn't know how to sign up for projects."
Gu Linzhao asked indifferently, "Why do you think that?"
Fu Xianyin: "It's just... my intuition."
Gu Linzhao: "Do you think I resemble Yin Zexuan?"
Fu Xianyin was puzzled: "What kind of question is that? I already said it was my intuition."
For some reason, a feeling of impatience suddenly welled up inside her: "So did you report it or not?"
Gu Linzhao: "I've submitted it."
He didn't say anything more, and Fu Xianyin didn't want to pay him any attention either.
This person insisted on making her go through such a long and complicated process when it was a question that could be answered with just one sentence.
This morning, she made sarcastic remarks, saying that she answered "or" in the "Yes or No" question and questioned her Chinese score of 139.
Now it seems, isn't he the same? Is he any better than her? And he still has the nerve to talk about her.
Fu Xianyin wasn't exactly a good-tempered person to begin with, and the more she thought about it, the more annoyed she became.
She didn't care whether there was anyone else around, just casually put her schoolbag down and went to find Xu Xinyu and the others to practice baton exchange.
According to the results determined in the morning's PE class, she was the last runner, and all she needed to do was practice the handover with Tian Tian.
On the other side, Xu Xinyu and Ji Zhumiao were practicing baton exchanges. Tian Tian asked her:
"You've never run a relay before?"
Fu Xianyin thought about it seriously for a moment: "I ran a straight-track relay when I was in elementary school."
Tian Tian: ...
She persisted: "I've never run a 4100 before?"
Fu Xianyin shook her head frankly: "Never, I don't like sports, and I never sign up for any events at sports meets."
Tian Tian: "..."
She resignedly said, "Then let me tell you."
Tian Tian was admitted to Beichuan No. 1 Middle School through her athletic talent in the high school entrance examination. Later, her academic performance improved, and since sports are a short-lived career, she switched to academic subjects instead of sports.
She was very professional, explaining almost all the precautions to her, and even specifically pointing out the problems she had with her run that morning:
"Your stamina is too poor. To be honest, your explosive power is very good. I have rarely seen anyone who has not trained can run 100 meters at this speed, but I have also never seen anyone so tired after running 100 meters."
Fu Xianyin: ...
She sighed, "You don't have to say that last sentence."
Tian Tian: "The preliminary, semi-final and final rounds of the 4100-meter race are all on the same day. There are 20 classes in our group, with 5 classes per group. If we can make it to the final, we have to run at least twice. Do you have the stamina to run twice now?"
Fu Xianyin: "They probably... can't escape."
She hasn't exercised in so long, really so long. Her thighs are still a bit weak after her morning run.
Tian Tian: "Then you need to train your endurance this week. Run more every day, at least 4 sets of 100 meters a day. Today is the first day. I'll time you later and you can sprint again, and then run an 800-meter race at a steady pace."
Fu Xianyin: "How much? 800?"
Tian Tian: "Your stamina is too poor. If you don't train, you'll be exhausted after the group stage. What will you compete in later stages?"
Fu Xianyin immediately regretted agreeing to run the relay with Gao Ying.
She never expected the training to be like this. She thought that practicing baton passing would be enough, but she didn't expect that she would have to run 800 meters in the sprint.
Tian Tian looked at the dejected person beside her, somewhat puzzled: "This run won't take half an hour, it won't interfere with your studies. Didn't you say you could practice for half an hour every day?"
Fu Xianyin sighed, "I'm not worried about going over time, I'm worried about dying on the playground."
God knows, she never ran the 800 meters again after her physical education entrance exam.
Tian Tian: "It's okay, run slowly, you won't die."
She paused, then said very seriously, "I used to be a sports athlete, and I specifically learned professional first aid techniques such as CPR. If you are really feeling unwell or in a lot of pain, just tell me. In case of cardiac arrest or something, I'm not helpless."
Fu Xianyin shook her head: "No, if I really have a cardiac arrest, don't do anything, just let me die."
Tian Tian said, "Let's test 100 again. I'll see if your score drops after a day of rest. I don't have a stopwatch. I remember I borrowed the stopwatch from Gu Linzhao this morning. Why don't you go and borrow it from him again?"
Fu Xianyin bit her lower lip.
The irritation that had briefly subsided because of chatting with Tian Tian returned.
She wasn't quite sure where her irritability came from, but she knew for sure that she didn't really want to talk to Gu Linzhao right now.
Tian Tian looked at her, confused. "What's wrong? Isn't he right there?"
Fu Xianyin followed her hand and saw Gu Linzhao standing in another corner of the playground, talking to Xu Xinyu and Ji Zhumiao.
Fu Xianyin: "Is Xu Xinyu also asking him to borrow a stopwatch?" She paused and said, "Let's ask Lin Anxu if he can borrow one."
Tian Tian: "That works too."
Lin Anxu and Cheng Zhaozhao had just finished one set of runs, and Fu Xianyin easily borrowed a stopwatch. Tian Tian, holding the stopwatch and a whistle in her mouth, exchanged the preparatory commands with Fu Xianyin:
"I'll blow the whistle three times, then on the fourth whistle you run, okay?"
Fu Xianyin nodded: "Okay."
She took off her school uniform jacket, tossed it aside beside the playground, stretched her wrists and ankles, and got into a ready position.
Tian Tian stood at the finish line, holding a stopwatch. It was pitch black, and there were few lights on the playground. In the dim darkness, Fu Xianyin could not see the figures clearly.
A sharp whistle came from not far away.
Fu Xianyin silently recited in her heart:
three
two
one
Upon hearing the fourth whistle, she reacted quickly and ran out.
This time, the body's reaction was more intense than in the morning.
She had only run less than half the distance when Fu Xianyin felt her legs go weak. She gritted her teeth, increased the frequency of her arm swings and stride, and the moment she passed Tian Tian, her legs gave way and she collapsed to the ground.
Tian Tian timed her with her watch and told her the time: "15.3 seconds, more than a second slower than this morning, and that's after you've had a day off."
Fu Xianyin felt as if a cow was panting in her throat; she really couldn't say a word and just lay on the ground nodding her head haphazardly a couple of times.
The wind howled past, and amidst the clamor of all things, Tian Tian's voice was faint and unclear.
Her eyes were closed, and her chest was heaving violently.
Suddenly, a remarkably clear sigh reached her ears.
Fu Xianyin thought that Tian Tian was afraid that she would die suddenly and wanted to come up to perform CPR on her, so she quickly propped herself up with her arms. The moment she sat up, she met the eyes of the person in front of her.
It's not Tian Tian.
It was Gu Linzhao.
He sat opposite her, slightly bent over, staring straight at her with a complex expression in his eyes.
But the night was too dark, really too dark.
Fu Xianyin couldn't see the emotions in his eyes.
The evening breeze ruffled Gu Linzhao's hair. He didn't say anything, just quietly looked at her.
For a fleeting moment.
Fu Xianyin felt as if the world had frozen for a second.
The wind stopped, and the sounds ceased.
The presence of everything gradually disappeared, as if only the two of them existed in the entire world.
It felt like the end of the world.
It's like the beginning of the world.
Fu Xianyin suddenly felt that dying suddenly at this moment might not be so bad.
Whether it's the end of the world or the beginning of the world, whether everything is revived or all life is extinguished.
At such a moment, end her miserable life and sing a hymn to her death.
It was the most wonderful thing Fu Xianyin could imagine.
But the world never went as she wished.
This level of exercise would only make her feel exhausted, not cause her to die suddenly.
Fu Xianyin sighed slowly.
The person opposite slowly stood up and extended a hand.
Fu Xianyin grabbed that hand and let the force pull her up from the ground.
Having learned from the experience of the morning, Fu Xianyin was not pulled astray this time.
She stood steadily on the ground, though her steps were a little unsteady.
Unexpectedly, Gu Linzhao didn't say a word.
Fu Xianyin didn't know what she was stubbornly insisting on. Even though the irritation in her heart had long since disappeared, she was still holding onto a stubbornness and unwilling to be the one to back down first.
It doesn't seem like they could be called the one who bowed down first.
Because it seemed that she and Gu Linzhao hadn't had any conflict at all, it was just a normal bickering, and the reason she was angry was simply because she had a bad temper.
But Gu Linzhao insisted on beating around the bush for so long when it was a question that could be answered with just one sentence.
Two little figures were fighting in Fu Xianyin's mind, neither willing to admit defeat, neither willing to give in first.
Fu Xianyin stood there for a while.
The person opposite showed no intention of speaking or leaving.
The two little voices in her head were arguing back and forth. Fu Xianyin bit the soft flesh of her cheek. The pain forced her to come back to her senses. She lowered her eyes and stared at her shoes. Finally, she took a step to leave.
However, as soon as she took a step, her wrist was grabbed.
A slightly low voice entered her ears:
"Fu Xianyin, are you throwing a tantrum at me?"
