The airport announcement system broadcasted again, urging passengers to complete the security check for this flight.
Gu Fanyan picked up her phone, and Lin Zhibai called again.
She stared blankly, but didn't take it.
Immediately afterwards, my mother called.
She answered.
"What time is your flight, Yan'er?" Gu's mother asked with a smile. "I was worried about disturbing your security check."
"Mom, I haven't gone through security yet," Gu Fanyan replied. "I'll be at the security checkpoint in a bit."
"Okay, be careful and call me when you get to your destination."
"Okay." Gu Fanyan replied, her gaze turning towards the security checkpoint.
There weren't many people queuing there anymore; for recent flights, there weren't many people needing to go through security checks.
Not long after, her phone rang again, this time from an unknown number.
Gu Fanyan answered the call and recognized the voice as that of Liu, Lin Zhibai's most trusted assistant.
"Miss Gu," Assistant Liu said anxiously, "Young Master Lin is on Maple Leaf Avenue. Could you call a car from the Gu family to take him to the airport?"
"Maple Leaf Avenue? Why are you on Maple Leaf Avenue?" Gu Fanyan asked, puzzled. This road was the only way for her to get from her home to the city center, the airport, and other places.
"Our car broke down halfway, and we couldn't get a taxi for a long time. It's too late to call a car from the Lin family," Assistant Liu said.
"Answer my question," Gu Fanyan urged.
Assistant Liu hesitated slightly, "Young Master Lin went to the Gu family... to pick you up."
Gu Fanyan froze, almost dropping the phone from her hand.
A long time passed.
Finally, the familiar figure appeared before my eyes.
"Sister Fanyan, let's go," Lin Zhibai said breathlessly, reaching out to take her hand.
She didn't move, but turned her gaze to the security checkpoint and said, "Our flight has stopped boarding."
Lin Zhibai followed her gaze and indeed, the security checkpoint was quiet for the time being, with only a few passengers passing through.
I missed my flight.
Her unfocused gaze made his heart clench, making it hard to breathe. "It's alright, I'll arrange for the Lin family's private jet. It'll only take two more hours at most."
He immediately picked up the phone and gave instructions.
But then she stood up, looking at him blankly: "No need, I don't want to wait any longer."
After saying that, she turned and left.
"Sister Fanyan!" He immediately hung up the phone, caught up with her, and grabbed her hand. "My car broke down on the road..."
"You were the one who proposed to me back then," Gu Fanyan said calmly, "Why am I waiting here for you for six hours today?"
"Can you tell me what you've been doing for the past six hours?"
"I..." Lin Zhibai could only confess, "I've confirmed the safety of Sheng Xin and her child."
"So, you think these things are more important than our marriage?" Gu Fanyan's tone was filled with bitterness.
"It was just a coincidence," Lin Zhibai explained.
"I don't need your explanation," Gu Fanyan shook off his hand. "I know you really want to marry me, but what makes you think I'll allow you to have everything?"
Lin Zhibai shook his head in a panic: "That's not how it is. Sheng Xin can never compare to you."
"In your heart, am I number one?" Gu Fanyan smiled bitterly, "But I don't want to be number one, I want to be the only one."
She tried to leave, but he held onto her hand tightly.
"Lin Zhibai, let's break up."
"Let go!" Her calm eyes no longer held any tenderness.
Lin Zhibai was startled; he had the strength but couldn't muster it, and unconsciously loosened his grip.
She walked out of the airport without looking back, step by step disappearing from his sight, and finally, tears still streamed down her face uncontrollably.
"Madam," the Gu family's nanny hurried into the flower hall, "the eldest young lady has returned."
Mrs. Gu was slightly taken aback, and her sharp gaze immediately turned to the nanny: "Did you tell her that Young Master Lin was coming here?"
The nanny shook her head vigorously: "How could we dare!"
After composing herself, Gu's mother quickly walked out and met Gu Fanyan as she entered the living room.
"Mom," Gu Fanyan said before she could even speak, "I'm not going to Baitou Mountain. My marriage to Lin Zhibai is off."
Gu's mother tried to control herself, but couldn't, her face filled with anxiety: "Yan'er, what's wrong?"
Gu Fanyan gave a bitter smile: "It's nothing, I just suddenly realized that he and I are not at the point of getting married at all."
Back in her room, she pushed her suitcase into the far corner of the walk-in closet.
Inside are all wedding dresses, which probably won't be used for a long time.
She washed herself thoroughly, then lay down on the bed, too tired to move.
fine.
She told herself, "Just take a nap, and you'll feel better when you wake up."
"Yan'er." Gu's mother's voice made her open her eyes.
Gu's mother walked in, "I disturbed your sleep."
"It's nothing." She wasn't asleep at all.
Gu's mother sat down by her bedside, hesitated for a moment, and then decided to speak: "There is something I must tell you."
“I had someone take Sheng Xin away to a safe place and also assigned someone to take care of her.”
"I thought this would solve your problem with Lin Zhibai, but I didn't expect it to delay your flight today."
Gu's mother's tone was filled with deep self-reproach, "Yan'er, did I do something wrong in this matter?"
Gu Fanyan closed her eyes briefly. "Mom, you shouldn't blame yourself. I'm the one who should blame myself!"
She's so old, yet she can't handle her own relationship problems, constantly causing her mother worry.
Sheng Xin, someone who has absolutely no connection to the Gu family, has gotten his mother to personally intervene.
Gu Fanyan felt increasingly guilty and couldn't help but shed tears. "Mom, I'm so useless."
"Who said that!" Gu's mother hugged her tightly, feeling sorry for her. "You are my daughter. If I don't worry about you, who else will I worry about!"
"Don't worry, Lin Zhibai was wrong in this matter. He cares about you and will definitely come to admit his mistake."
Admit your mistake?
Does she need it?
Mom was right; the Lin family came the next day.
Mr. and Mrs. Lin arrived.
Gu Fanyan stayed in her room and didn't come downstairs until it was time for dinner, when her mother came upstairs herself.
"At least go and see them," Gu's mother advised. "After all, they are elders you've known since childhood."
Gu Fanyan lowered her eyes. "If they try to persuade me to reconcile with Lin Zhibai, what should I say?"
After thinking for a moment, Gu's mother said, "Just tell them your decision."
Gu Fanyan nodded: "I understand, Mom, you can go downstairs first."
Gu's mother returned to the restaurant and waited for Gu Fanyan to arrive.
Not long after, the sound of a car engine came from the garden.
The nanny quickly walked over and said to Madam Gu, "Madam, Miss has gone out."
Gu Fanyan went to the garden via the side staircase, drove away from home, and that was how she told her parents about her decision.
Mrs. Gu was a little embarrassed, but since it was her daughter's decision, she chose to respect it: "Mr. Lin, Mrs. Lin, let the two children handle their own affairs."
Lin's parents sighed softly; that was all they could do.
