"That's just your opinion," Gu Fanyan said, her anger rising. "Did you even discuss this with me? If I hadn't stopped you just now, would you have publicly said that Liang Mufan was adopted by me?"
Lin Zhibai was taken aback: "This is true, why can't I say it?"
really!
Gu Fanyan was glad that she had stepped on the brakes in time!
"Lin Zhibai, what right do you have to decide for me to reveal Liang Mufan's background?"
"I never intended to make this public. In my heart, he is my biological son!"
Lin Zhibai understood. "I wanted to make this public because I didn't want the Lin family to smear you!"
“I don’t care!” Gu Fanyan replied.
"But these are all obstacles to our restart..."
How can you be so sure that I definitely want to start over with you?
Lin Zhibai felt a sharp pain in his heart, as if a knife had pierced it.
Although she had said the same thing in the office, he knew she was joking then.
Now, however, this is what she truly wants to say.
A self-deprecating smile flickered across his lips: "You really think that's how we are... In your heart, I'm not even as important as a child..."
Gu Fanyan felt a pang of pain in her heart. She immediately realized that her tone had been a bit harsh, but there was no need to explain. "He's not an ordinary child!" That was all she could say.
After saying that, she turned and left.
Lin Zhibai stood there, stunned, watching her figure disappear...
Unbeknownst to them, a pair of eyes had been watching everything intently from behind the bushes.
Suddenly, he heard a slight noise, immediately turned around, and shouted, "Who's there?"
"Lin Zhibai!" The person who emerged from behind the bushes was Yun Suiwan.
She looked anxious: "What happened between you and Sister Fanyan? I saw her just now, and she looked very unwell."
She asked Gu Fanyan, but Gu Fanyan left without saying a word.
She was anxious to ask Lin Zhibai, so she took a shortcut and came out from behind the bushes.
Lin Zhibai looked somber: "It's nothing... She just doesn't want Liang Mufan to know about her background, even if it will affect my relationship with her."
"So you two had a fight?" Yun Suiwan was speechless. "Just because of this?"
"Do you know that for Sister Fanyan, no matter what her purpose is tonight, being able to attend in front of these people as your partner is equivalent to her being willing to start over with you!" Yun Suiwan said with a look of disappointment.
Lin Zhibai paused, his face still somber. "I've realized now that I've never truly understood her. No matter what I do, she's always wary of me."
Yun Suiwan wanted to say something more, but Lin Zhibai didn't want to listen.
He turned his wheelchair around and left.
Gu Fanyan walked out of the venue and to her car, but Chen Qiao was nowhere to be seen.
"Mr. Gu." The assistant followed.
"Chen Qiao is gone?" Gu Fanyan asked.
The assistant shook her head; she really hadn't noticed that.
"I'm still here!" Chen Qiao suddenly emerged from the back of the car, slightly out of breath, with a thin layer of sweat on her nose. "I've been waiting for so long, but that person still hasn't shown up."
She wiped her sweat: "I saw someone who looked a lot like him just now, but I chased him for more than a hundred meters before I realized it wasn't him."
Gu Fanyan said, "I'm going back now. You can take a taxi later."
Chen Qiao nodded: "You guys go first."
The car drove onto the road.
As he drove, the assistant asked, "Mr. Gu, didn't you say you had things to do tonight? Why are you going home so early?"
Gu Fanyan looked out the car window and asked, "Did you see the leaves in Chen Qiao's hair just now?"
The assistant nodded; two leaves, quite obviously.
"She chased that person, probably from the parking lot to the entrance of the venue, but there wasn't a single tree along the way."
Where did the leaves in her hair come from?
Gu Fanyan did not answer, but only instructed: "Investigate Chen Qiao's detailed information and her experiences over the past ten years thoroughly, by any means necessary, I need the most accurate details!"
The assistant immediately agreed.
When Gu Fanyan returned home, she saw the nanny who was in charge of taking care of Liang Mufan heating up milk.
"Little Meatball isn't asleep yet?" She glanced at the time; he should have been asleep long ago.
“I don’t know what’s wrong with the young master today. He’s been sullen and unhappy,” the nanny said, shaking her head worriedly. “He won’t even look at his favorite board game, and he won’t drink his milk or go to sleep. It’s already been heated up once already.”
Gu Fanyan took the warm milk cup and went to the children's room.
The little one lay on the bed, staring blankly at the ceiling.
"Little dumpling?" Gu Fanyan called softly with a smile, "Don't you want to sleep tonight?"
"Mom." The little boy's sullen expression softened slightly, but he was still listless.
Gu Fanyan pulled him into her arms. "If you don't want to sleep, how about Mommy tells you a story?"
The little one reluctantly agreed, picked up the fairy tale book, and turned to the chapter about the "Clown Duck".
This was his favorite story, and he always said he wanted to go on an adventure like the Ugly Duckling.
However, after hearing this today, two lines of tears appeared on her little face.
"What's wrong, son? Tell Mom," Gu Fanyan said anxiously, "Did someone make you feel wronged?"
Liang Mufan shook her head. "Mom, will I end up like the Ugly Duckling, where neither Mom nor Dad wants me?"
Gu Fanyan felt a pang in her heart and immediately shook her head: "The Ugly Duckling's parents didn't abandon it. It later turned into a swan and flew away with its parents!"
"You will always be with Mom and Dad..."
"You're lying!" Liang Mufan retorted, "I don't have a father anymore..."
"No, he will come to see you."
"Even if he comes to see me, you won't let him into the house!"
"How could my... mother do this?"
“You said last time that Father Liang wouldn’t come, but he did come and even took me out to play.” Liang Mufan’s tears fell even more.
Gu Fanyan was stunned for a moment before she remembered.
On the day she returned from abroad, she thought Liang Zixin wouldn't be able to come and see them off.
Unexpectedly, Liang Zixin managed to get through it despite trying every possible means.
She never expected that her child would misunderstand her because of this!
And she's remembered it for so many days!
“Little dumpling, Mommy can promise you that I will absolutely not prevent Uncle Liang from coming to see you,” Gu Fanyan said with great certainty, raising one hand to swear.
The child, however, fell for it and stopped arguing.
Gu Fanyan breathed a sigh of relief. "Go to sleep, it's late. Mom will take you to the amusement park tomorrow, okay?"
Liang Mufan didn't say anything, stepped out of her arms, and lay down to sleep.
However, the little body was still facing away from her.
It hasn't been extinguished yet.
Gu Fanyan lay down halfway, gently patted his shoulder, and said softly, "Son, no matter what happens to Father Liang, Mom will always love you and will never leave you."
Liang Mufan remained silent for a moment, then the soft snoring of his sleeping body could be heard.
