Gu Fanyan and Lin Zhibai arrived at the airport together to pick up the person.
Upon seeing Hua Fei and Huo Beichen, they were speechless for a long time, finding it utterly unbelievable.
After getting on the bus, Gu Fanyan recounted how she adopted the child.
It was quite a coincidence, really.
Back then, her company partnered with others to build apartment buildings near the teachers' college. Locals told her that the teachers' college was raising orphans, and every year kind-hearted people would go there to adopt them.
She then thought about her own situation.
She felt that adopting a child might alleviate her guilt and sadness.
She went to the teachers' college and explained her purpose.
The dean smiled and said, "What a coincidence! Two other couples have come today, also wanting to adopt a child."
She and two other couples went to see the children. She immediately spotted a child with Asian ancestry and thought he was especially cute and appealing to her.
She even held that child.
The child's face was a little round, and his eyes were especially bright...
Upon hearing this, Hua Fei's heart sank inexplicably.
She had a feeling that Gu Fanyan's story wasn't so simple.
At that moment, she felt her hand being held. Turning her head, she saw that it was Huo Beichen holding her hand.
His palms were sweaty, and he seemed a little nervous.
Hua Fei's heart sank even further.
She wasn't the only one who realized something was wrong.
Gu Fanyan continued, "At the time, I really liked that child, and I told the director that I wanted to adopt him."
The dean smiled and nodded, then asked, "Ms. Gu, are you married?"
Gu Fanyan was slightly taken aback.
Upon seeing this, the dean understood. "Ms. Gu, our college has a rule that only married couples can adopt children. We don't want children to grow up in single-parent families."
Gu Fanyan had no choice but to think of a solution.
Later, she came up with a solution, and that's why Liang Mufan's surname is "Liang".
However, Gu Fanyan's eyes darkened slightly, "When I went back after completing the formalities, the child I liked had already been adopted."
"I can only adopt another child of Eastern descent from the same batch, namely Liang Mufan."
Gu Fanyan looked at Hua Fei, somewhat puzzled, "Why is your face so pale?"
"Is there anything wrong with what I've said?" she asked Lin Zhibai, puzzled.
"No, it's nothing..." Hua Fei shook her head.
Huo Beichen felt there was no need to hide it, and said, "We just got news from the director of the reformatory that the child passed away from illness."
Gu Fanyan was stunned for a moment, her eyes reddening involuntarily.
Lin Zhibai put his arm around her shoulder and said, "This means you two are not destined to be mother and son. By some twist of fate, you and Liang Mufan are the ones who are destined to be together."
That makes sense.
Gu Fanyan still remembers the child's adorable appearance and feels a pang of sadness.
“Don’t worry about it,” Lin Zhibai said. “Go back and get a paternity test done. The results will be out in a few days.”
Hua Fei nodded, but her pale face remained bloodless.
The paternity test was arranged quickly.
They didn't let Liang Mufan know about this, and simply took a single hair from him to settle the matter.
The testing agency said the results would be available in three days.
That evening, Huo Beichen was busy with official business in his study when Zeze suddenly appeared at the door.
"Come in," a hint of surprise flashed in Huo Beichen's eyes. "What is it?"
The child rarely came to his study; he knew from a very young age that he shouldn't disturb his father's work.
Zeze walked up to him, her little face filled with anxiety. "Daddy, have you found my little brother?"
Huo Beichen didn't hide anything: "There are some clues, but it will take time to confirm them."
"Why isn't Mommy happy at all?" Zeze asked.
Huo Beichen looked puzzled.
The sample was sent for testing this morning.
After returning, Hua Fei's emotions have remained very stable.
I had dinner with him.
I tutored Zeze in the afternoon.
They even treated a patient who came to their home for treatment.
Zeze shook his head: "Mom was standing alone on the terrace, lost in thought. She only smiled after I went there."
Huo Beichen gently stroked his little head affectionately, "It's great that you care about your mother. What are you going to do now?"
Zeze thought for a moment, "Play the piano."
Huo Beichen said softly, "Go practice your piano, I'll go see Mom."
Zeze agreed and ran out of the study.
Before long, the sound of the piano filled the entire villa.
Huo Beichen walked towards the terrace to the sound of the piano.
It had been so long since he had felt this inner peace.
Calmness comes from contentment.
It turns out that what he had always wanted was for her to be by his side.
He walked onto the terrace, and Hua Fei, hearing his footsteps, turned around.
She was only wearing a thin silk nightgown and didn't seem to feel cold, but her nose was already red from the cold.
Huo Beichen took off his coat and wrapped it tightly around her, saying, "It's getting cold." His tone was reproachful.
Hua Fei pursed her lips slightly, "I'm planning to go back to my room now."
Huo Beichen accompanied her back to her room. Just as he was about to speak, he saw her holding her forehead and saying, "The wind was indeed a bit too strong just now. I'm going to sleep now."
She lay down on the bed.
She had something on her mind, but she didn't plan to tell him.
He didn't insist, and after washing up, he lay down next to her.
Work can be put aside for now.
Outside the window, the wind grew stronger, rustling the leaves and creating a uniquely autumnal chill.
But it was warm inside the blankets because of the body heat of two people.
Hua Fei was feeling sleepy at this point and fell asleep without realizing it.
It was late at night.
Huo Beichen had already fallen asleep when suddenly he heard Hua Fei's voice, "No, no, don't go..." she screamed in panic.
He suddenly opened his eyes and found her covered in sweat, her expression contorted, waving her hands and shouting wildly—she was having a nightmare.
"Wake up, wake up!" he immediately grabbed her shoulders and shouted urgently.
She opened her eyes with a start, waking from a terrible dream.
Huo Beichen had already brought her a glass of water and helped her sit up. "Drink some water."
She drank most of the glass in one go before she could relax.
Huo Beichen put the cup down for her and sat down next to her. "Do you want to take a shower?" She had just broken out in a cold sweat.
Hua Fei shook her head. "Why don't you ask me what I dreamt about just now?"
"Are you willing to talk to me?" he asked.
She lowered her eyes. "I dreamt..." Her voice choked as she began, "...the child that Fanyan couldn't adopt was ours..."
And he has already...
Huo Beichen felt a pang in his heart and pulled her into his arms. "No, it can't be." He said it with such certainty, but his voice couldn't help but tremble slightly.
They were both worried about the same thing.
Hua Fei couldn't stop crying, and his clothes were soaked with tears.
Huo Beichen suppressed his suspicions and comforted him, "The results will be out in two days. Don't scare yourself."
"Get a good night's sleep, I'll take you somewhere tomorrow."
"Where?" Hua Fei asked.
“A place where you can feel at peace,” he replied.
