Chapter 596 A Man's Dignity

Gu Fanyan and her father waited anxiously outside the emergency room.

Midway through, Lin Zhibai called and asked her when she would finish.

He thought she was still trying on her dress.

Upon hearing his voice, she immediately burst into tears. "My mother suddenly fainted and is currently in the emergency room."

She was so shocked that she forgot to tell him.

"I'm coming right away." He immediately hung up the phone.

A little while later, a doctor came out of the emergency room and handed Mr. Gu a document.

Critical Illness Notice.

When Gu's father saw these words, all his composure was instantly shattered, and he almost fell over.

His assistant quickly steadied him and asked the doctor, "What happened?"

"The patient's condition is very complicated, and the specialists are inside doing their best to save him," the doctor explained. "But no one knows the outcome; this document is just a backup."

"We won't sign this!" Gu Fanyan said firmly. "Tell the experts inside that they must protect my mother!"

The doctor looked troubled: "Mr. Gu, Ms. Gu, this will put a lot of pressure on the experts."

"I'll sign!" Mr. Gu composed himself and signed the document without further hesitation.

After the doctor left, he slowly sat down on the bench against the wall, looking several years older in an instant.

Gu Fanyan's heart tightened. "Dad, don't worry, I've already contacted experts abroad, they'll be here soon."

"Will it be too late for them to come?" Gu's father asked bitterly. "The two doctors in the emergency room right now are already top experts in the country."

"Mr. Gu, Miss, the dean is here and wants to talk to you," the assistant said as he approached.

Gu Fanyan and her father walked into an office next door.

The hospital director said with a solemn expression, "Mr. Gu, Mrs. Gu's condition is very complicated. It would be better if we could invite Dr. Lin Guangchen to come and have a joint consultation."

For a hospital director to speak with such certainty, the patient's condition must be far from optimistic.

Gu Fanyan was unwilling to give up and asked, "Before Lin Guangchen came to your hospital, were there no other patients with similar illnesses who could be treated?"

“It can be cured,” the hospital director replied, “but every time we go into surgery, it’s a risk, and the outcome is unknown. Wouldn’t having another capable doctor make things much more secure?”

Gu Fanyan's heart sank.

After leaving the office, Gu Fanyan helped her father back to sit on the bench. "Dad, you wait here. I'm going to find Lin Guangchen."

Mr. Gu patted her hand, "You. Your mother didn't spoil you for nothing."

Gu Fanyan's eyes stung with tears, and she turned and left, not wanting her father to see her tears.

But she couldn't find Lin Guangchen.

The hospital said he was still on vacation and they couldn't determine his whereabouts.

She went to Lin Guangchen's residence and also went to his parents' house, but she couldn't find him.

For a moment, she was at a loss. Sitting in the car, she looked at Gu Zheng's contact information on her phone several times...

Suddenly, she looked up casually and saw a familiar figure in a shop not far away.

It was exactly what she had been searching for.

The other person turned around in front of the shop's floor-to-ceiling windows and met her gaze.

He knew she was looking for him.

"Please sit down."

When Gu Fanyan came to Lin Guangchen, he had already ordered her a cup of coffee.

“You knew I was looking for you?” she asked.

“My parents called me,” Lin Guangchen replied calmly. “I have a private cell phone.”

Therefore, he also knew about her mother's situation.

She stopped arguing with him and said, "Name your price. If you go to the hospital right now, I'll write you a check immediately."

Lin Guangchen shook his head: "Those two in the emergency room are top experts. Your mother should be out of danger by now."

Gu Fanyan was slightly taken aback, not understanding what he meant.

Lin Guangchen continued, "But this disease is actually very easy to relapse, and each relapse is more dangerous than the last. At that time, doctors like me are very valuable."

Just as she finished speaking, Gu Fanyan's phone suddenly rang.

The caller ID displayed "Lin Zhibai".

Just as Gu Fanyan reached for her phone, Lin Guangchen's expression suddenly changed: "Don't answer it."

She looked up at him, bewildered by his forceful attitude.

He then reached out and placed Gu Fanyan's phone face down on the table.

Now, the sound can't be heard either.

"My condition is that you marry me," Lin Guangchen said.

"You must be joking." Gu Fanyan thought she had misheard.

"My condition is that you marry me," Lin Guangchen repeated.

"Why?" He doesn't need women at all.

Lin Guangchen smiled faintly: "You can interpret this as me needing a man's dignity. Do you know how embarrassing it was for me when you dated me and then turned around and married Lin Zhibai?"

Gu Fanyan didn't believe it.

"Come back to me when you've figured it out." With that, he got up and left.

He wasn't joking at all.

Gu Fanyan was stunned for a while before she reacted. She picked up the phone, but Lin Zhibai had already called several times and missed.

She immediately called back.

"Sister Fanyan, Auntie's surgery was a success." Lin Zhibai's relieved voice came from the other end of the phone.

As Lin Guangchen said, the two experts could save her mother's life.

However, there was a second half to his sentence.

Gu Fanyan felt a surge of fear.

She hurriedly searched for Lin Guangchen's figure in the crowd.

But he was long gone.

Before stepping out of the hospital elevator, she composed herself.

My mother has been admitted to the intensive care unit. She has not yet woken up and is in a drowsy state under the monitoring of various instruments.

Mr. Gu and the hospital director stood outside the intensive care unit, talking in hushed tones.

“That’s how this disease is. Even if the surgery is successful, we can’t be careless at all,” the hospital director said solemnly. “Some patients can get out of bed, but they can faint again in an instant.”

"If a second stroke occurs, the situation will be very dangerous."

"However, this is a low-probability event, and we will give Madam Gu the best medicine..."

Gu Fanyan dared not listen any longer, turned around and left, walking absentmindedly down the corridor.

She didn't know how long she had walked when suddenly, a strong arm pulled her into a hug.

A familiar warmth instantly enveloped her.

Her tense nerves relaxed slightly. She turned around and hugged the embrace tightly, seeking some comfort for her panic and disorientation.

"It's alright," Lin Zhibai whispered in her ear. "Auntie is out of danger."

"Mmm," she replied, blinking her dry eyes.

Lin Zhibai led her to sit down on a nearby bench. "Have some water."

He handed me a glass of water, steaming slightly, which was contained in a thermos.

She took it and drank it; the water was warm.

Her hands were cold, and she unconsciously gripped the cup tighter.

Lin Zhibai frowned slightly, reached out and grabbed her hand, "Your hands are so cold? Did you not drive when you went out?"

How could she tell him that her hands were cold and that it had nothing to do with the outside temperature?

He took the cup back, then grabbed her hand and tucked it into his pocket.

Gu Fanyan's eyes warmed.

The warmth of his embrace was much softer than that of a water glass.
