Chapter 583 At Least She Came

After waiting for a while, the housekeeper didn't come, but Lin Zhibai called instead.

“Go up to the second floor through the side door,” he said on the phone, sounding very tired.

Gu Fanyan hesitated, wondering whether she should take Assistant Jiang to confront him.

“Miss, why don’t you go check on the situation first?” Assistant Jiang said shrewdly. “I’ll wait for your call here.”

"That's fine then." Gu Fanyan nodded.

She walked up to the second floor through the side door, and as she passed the entrance to the stairwell, she heard hurried footsteps coming from the first floor.

They said it was for Lin Zhibai's medical treatment, but no one came upstairs.

She hasn't been here in a long time.

But she still remembers that dinner party at the Lin family home. She had just turned 20 and came to the dinner with her parents.

Lin Zhibai sent someone to tell her that he was sick and resting in his room.

But when she got to the room, she found that he was perfectly fine, and the table was covered with gifts.

"Sister Fanyan, I don't know what you like, but I bought you everything I thought looked nice..." A hint of caution appeared in his handsome eyes.

A self-deprecating smile flickered across Gu Fanyan's lips. How long ago was that? Yet she still remembered it so clearly.

She knocked on Lin Zhibai's door. It was quiet inside, the curtains were half-drawn, and a small lamp was on beside the bed.

Lin Zhibai was half-lying on the bed, and his neck was indeed wrapped in gauze.

"You..." she was a little stunned, "How badly are you injured?"

Lin Zhibai tried to turn his neck, but it was obviously difficult, so he turned his gaze to look at her.

She involuntarily frowned and blurted out, "Didn't you always have people watching Lin Leming? How could you still let him get close to you?"

She was stunned after she finished speaking.

That statement is somewhat morally questionable.

"Is this what you call caring about me?" Lin Zhibai asked, his voice a little hoarse.

Gu Fanyan was stunned. "He injured your vocal cords?"

Lin Zhibai smiled and said, "My hoarse voice is because of drinking, it has nothing to do with Lin Leming."

Gu Fanyan didn't believe her: "Then why do you have a medical vehicle at your home?"

Lin Zhibai shrugged: "My mom is making a mountain out of a molehill. Cough cough..." He couldn't help but cough twice.

She walked to the small table, poured a glass of warm water, and brought it to him.

He took the cup, but gripped it tightly, hand and all. "You didn't care about me last night..." His handsome face showed grievance.

Gu Fanyan pulled her hand back and asked, "Why were you and Lin Leming fighting in the bar last night?"

"Men fighting is a very common thing," he said dismissively.

Her heart sank. He was deliberately putting on this attitude because he wanted to avoid the topic.

He was feeling guilty.

She almost revealed the purpose of her visit, but seeing the bandage on his neck, she held back.

In the end, she softened towards him.

Once he's healed, she'll definitely get to the bottom of this.

"If you don't want to talk about it, that's fine. Just get some rest. I'm leaving now." She turned to leave.

"You only watched me for less than five minutes?" He looked at her retreating figure. "Sister Fanyan, do you have to be so stingy with me?"

Gu Fanyan ignored his ramblings and continued walking.

“Lin Leming came all the way back from abroad to beat me up. Do you think I should fight him?” He had no choice but to bring up Lin Leming, unable to persuade her otherwise.

"Why?" she stopped and turned to ask.

He asked her to go to a bar with him, but she refused.

He poured himself a drink, but she ignored him.

He was injured, so she just showed up briefly.

She only stopped talking when he mentioned Lin Leming.

Lin Zhibai felt somewhat helpless, but also relieved, at least she could stay here a little longer.

“I sent people abroad to intercept him,” Lin Zhibai replied, “to remind him that there is a girl in China who needs his responsibility. He’s been hiding and running away as if I were going to kill him.”

Gu Fanyan remembered what Lin Leming had told her: Lin Zhibai had sent people to arrest and beat him all over the world.

At least one thing is certain from what they said: Lin Zhibai did indeed send people abroad because of Lin Leming.

"Is the girl you're talking about Sheng Xin?" Gu Fanyan asked.

Lin Zhibai's expression darkened slightly. "Yes, it's true that Sheng Xin is pregnant."

Gu Fanyan was taken aback.

"What do you mean? You want him to take responsibility for Sheng Xin and have the baby? You don't actually want him to marry Sheng Xin and live happily ever after as a family of three, do you?"

He still had Shengxin's best interests at heart.

Upon hearing this, he glanced at her quietly and asked, "Is that how you see me?"

There was a hint of hurt in his eyes.

Gu Fanyan didn't understand. Had she said something wrong?

"Young Master, it's time to change your dressing." At that moment, the butler came to the room door, bringing a doctor with him.

Gu Fanyan took the opportunity to leave the room.

The doctor's voice came from the room: "Young Master Lin, you still need to be careful. Don't underestimate the wound on your neck. It would be troublesome if it got infected."

The butler sighed softly, "We don't know what's wrong with our young master lately; he keeps getting injured."

Gu Fanyan couldn't help but lower her eyes; she felt responsible for his constant injuries.

She simply couldn't bring herself to bring up the matter of confronting him today.

She left through the side door and drove away from the Lin family home with her assistant, Jiang.

Assistant Jiang seemed very pleased, saying, "Miss, you and Young Master Lin are childhood sweethearts, you know each other inside and out. No matter what, Young Master Lin would never scheme against you."

"Lin Shao really doesn't have any bad intentions. You always ignore him, so he contacted me just to find out about you..."

With a "whoosh," the car suddenly stopped.

Assistant Jiang was taken aback, thinking he had said something wrong.

Gu Fanyan said nothing, got out of the car and walked into a fruit shop on the street.

A moment later, she returned carrying a bag of mangosteens.

“Miss, you want to eat mangosteens?” Assistant Jiang said, “Let me go buy some for you.”

“Lin Zhibai likes to eat this,” she said, then turned around and drove back to the Lin family’s house.

The main gate to the Lin family's garden was tightly closed, but a small door on the side was ajar.

She parked the car outside the gate, asked Assistant Jiang to wait in the car, and planned to come out after dropping off the mangosteen.

She walked through the garden and into the living room without encountering any members of the Lin family along the way.

The Lin family seemed to be shrouded in a strange atmosphere.

She walked into the living room and saw a woman who had been sitting on the sofa immediately stand up and look at her with a panicked expression.

The woman was dressed simply and looked reserved, appearing both uncomfortable and somewhat fearful.

Gu Fanyan could tell at a glance that this person was not a relative of the Lin family.

Although some of the Lin family's relatives were not well-off, they were generally quite confident.

“You…you look just like my daughter…” the woman suddenly said.

Gu Fanyan asked in surprise, "Your daughter is Sheng Xin?"

The woman nodded.

Gu Fanyan immediately realized that something was amiss. She remained calm and suppressed her anxiety, then asked, "What are you doing here? Did something happen to Sheng Xin?"

Upon hearing this, the woman's eyes reddened.

So Shengxin really is in trouble!
