Chapter 17: Cave Hyena

Ma Yue, who was training in the cave, heard loud cheers outside. He guessed the hunting party had returned, perhaps with a bountiful harvest. Wasn't a bountiful harvest the most worthy of cheer for primitive people?

"Charlatan!" Sure enough, after a few minutes, the big leader 'Hai' brought people in.

"Puppy?" He looked at the small thing held by the two people behind the chief. Hyena's? So ugly?

"Yes!" The chief excitedly recounted the huge gains from this hunt.

A fight broke out between two cave hyenas and a woolly rhinoceros (let's call these two species that for now). The hunting team of the Sea Tribe took advantage of the situation and harvested a huge woolly rhinoceros and two injured cave hyenas who were unwilling to have their food taken away by humans.

"Over there!" The chief pointed in the direction of the south, the grassland!

Well, it seems normal for herbivores like woolly rhinoceroses to live on grasslands. As for cave hyenas, they hunt herbivorous species, so it's normal for them to hunt on grasslands.

"There are caves over there too!" Yes, there are hills on the prairie, so it's normal to have some caves, groves, etc. Who says there are no groves and hills on the prairie?

These two puppies were found by the hunting team in a cave they passed by.

"Aren't these hyenas living in groups?" In the animal world that Ma Yue had seen in his previous life, hyenas lived in large groups.

"We only saw these two!" How could the chief know if cave hyenas lived in groups? In the past, the level of the Sea Tribe's hunting team was so low that their harvests were pitifully small.

If the Sea Tribe’s hunting team had not grown in size and become stronger, they wouldn’t even dare to go to the southern prairie.

Damn! These two little hyena cubs are probably still in the nursing stage. How am I supposed to feed them? But since I brought them here, it's also Chief Hai's kindness. So let's just raise them.

There is a big doghouse in the small cave inside.

Where's the milk?

Ma Yue called the Second Priest. "A lactating rabbit should have milk, right?" "Well, I don't care. I'll leave it to you, Second Priest." "My puppies are feeding on milk, but if the rabbits get less, it doesn't matter if one or two starve to death." Given the rabbits' small size, even if they have milk, it probably won't be much.

Just chop up some meat and fish, and make some meat broth or fish broth. That's all it takes, as Ma Yue has never raised a dog.

It's amazing that with just that little bit of rabbit milk, plus some minced meat soup and fish broth, the two little hyena cubs actually managed to survive. They're growing stronger day by day and are quite strong. Primitive creatures have strong vitality and are really hardy.

The image of the hyena is really not that good, so just make do with it.

Hunting teams inevitably suffer casualties. Even with flying rocks and spears, ferocious primitive beasts are not easy to hunt. Regardless, the current Sea Tribe hunting team is bolder and stronger, and their harvest will continue to grow.

There's no other way. The Sea Tribe has hundreds of people who need to be fed, and relying solely on fish isn't enough. Wild animals have more meat and are more resilient.

Relying on the surrounding small tribes for trade is a struggle; they're all so poor. For larger transactions, we have to go to the "Niupi" tribe. This is a good thing, though; with the Niupi tribe's trading venue, we don't have to worry about selling the coarse salt. Even the most powerful Niupi tribe needs salt, right?

Gradually, more and more animal skins were exchanged. Animal skins were the most important resource for surviving the winter, so in primitive people's transactions, animal skins were almost hard currency.

Since dozens of people from the Bear Tribe have surrendered, Ma Yue naturally wants to improve their living conditions as much as possible. You can't just ignore the old and the young, right?

The timber houses were well constructed, their densely packed walls tight, and the use of vines and branches to fill the gaps made them even tighter, minimizing drafts. As for door hinges, there were no existing solutions, so they simply reserved a few openings and replaced them with wooden doors. As long as a fire could be lit inside the timber house, it should be plenty warm.

A wooden bed, covered with hay and, if possible, animal skins, was a good enough condition.

This wooden house is over a hundred meters long and can easily accommodate a hundred or eighty people. It's no big deal.

There were two rows of wooden beds in the wooden house, and the walkway in the middle was built with many stone strips and stone blocks surrounding the stove, and the wood chimney was basically built. Ma Yue also wanted to make a large kang in Northeast China, but the problem was, he didn't know how!

Perhaps, it would be nice to be able to build a brick kiln in the future. At present, Ma Yue didn't even know the pottery making process, so how could he build a brick kiln?

"Vegetables and birds, very good!" Ma Yue was very satisfied after harvesting some onions and green vegetables.

As for the radish, it didn’t grow, but it doesn’t matter, I can study it slowly later.

Ma Yue shamelessly started to cook for himself. He stored a lot of oil from frying animal meat in clay pots, sprinkled some chopped green onions on it, and fried a few plates of tender meat. The taste was so delicious!

Fortunately, Ma Yue was not too selfish. He invited the main leaders of the tribe to enjoy such a delicacy. Thus, the high priest, the second priest, and the three chiefs became the first lucky ones to eat the stir-fried pork with chopped green onions.

The onions that Cai and Niao, two half-grown girls, planted and harvested were really not much. In the tribe, there was already a hierarchy, and the food was always chosen by the leader first. So, when Ma Yue and his group ate separately, no one had any objections.

In order to avoid causing too much public outrage, Ma Yue was unusually generous and took out a lot of green onions and animal oil. The next day, he stewed a few more pots of meat and sprinkled chopped green onions in the broth, which was filled with fragrance.

The strong men of the hunting team were rewarded. These were the main force of the tribe's survival, so it was normal for them to enjoy a little first.
