Chapter 47 Dividing the Spoils
"Halt!" Tongtian blocked the four people's path. "I discovered this gourd thousands of years ago and have carefully protected it ever since. Do you intend to steal the Three Pure Ones' possession?"
“No, fellow Daoists, please don’t misunderstand,” Taiyi waved his hand, “Treasures belong to those who are destined for them, why not let them choose for themselves?”
Di Jun raised his hand to stop Taiyi from speaking too bluntly. There was no such thing as "fate." "This is just your one-sided statement. How can you believe it?" He didn't believe a word of it. It was just a routine statement made during a treasure hunt.
Di Jun weighed the pros and cons, looked around, and ignored the Golden Immortal Child opposite him; there were four combat forces.
There are only seven gourds, so even if each person gets one, one person will still miss out. In terms of combat strength, the four of them are slightly inferior to the Three Pure Ones.
Both he and Taiyi possessed powerful magical treasures, so why not join forces with Nuwa and Fuxi to obtain two gourds, sell one to Fuxi and Nuwa, and finalize the matter of joining the demon race?
“We won’t ask for more. Two for four people, and the remaining five are enough for the five fellow Daoists to share equally.” Di Jun was confident that his approach was fair and just, and there was no room for argument.
Tongtian glared angrily, "I refuse! I want it all to belong to us! Just tell me straight, are you going to be enemies of the Three Pure Ones?"
Just as the two groups were locked in a tense standoff, a plume of red smoke billowed in. "Interesting. This gourd suits me well, so I'll take it."
The accident happened so suddenly that no one expected Hongyun to do such a thing. He snatched a red gourd right under their noses. Wasn't he afraid of dying?
The group gritted their teeth; if they chased after them, they feared the other side would benefit too easily; if they didn't chase, they would be furious.
At that moment, both groups of people simultaneously hated the clueless Hongyun; she was courting death.
Tongtian drew his Qingping Sword, exclaiming, "Damn it, they actually stole my Crimson Gourd!"
Chang Hao's almond-shaped eyes widened in shock. It was the first time he had ever seen such an extraordinary person in the prehistoric world. Was he mindless or confident that he could escape the pursuit of the Three Pure Ones, the Golden Crow brothers, and the Nuwa siblings?
It's one thing for him to live a secluded life and remain unknown in the wilderness, but none of the remaining six are people that Hongyun can afford to offend.
“Now there are only six gourds left,” Yaochi puffed out her cheeks. “Who was that person? I didn’t see clearly. Did you see clearly, Senior Brother?”
Yaochi also had her own little scheme. She was too young to ask for the gourd, so she decided to keep her eye on the red gourd from earlier. Maybe her senior brother would snatch it back, but then think it was someone else's and just give it to her, Yaochi, without her having any objections.
"Let's leave it on that fool for now, and retrieve it when we have time." Yuan Shi spoke calmly, but the deep-seated murderous intent he contained was clear to everyone present.
"Chang Hao and I have already divided it up. The purple-gold one is for the eldest brother, the red and cyan ones are for me, the green one is for the second brother, and the rest is for Chang Hao." Tongtian directly stated the distribution over thousands of years, and was even more furious. "For the past thousands of years, I have been running around here whenever I have free time. Do you think it's been easy for me?"
That's why people say that you raise your own children, you have the deepest affection for them, each one is a precious treasure, and losing any one of them would be heartbreaking.
As he spoke, the purple-gold gourd ripened and fell straight into Laozi's hand.
Laozi took a look and found nothing special. However, it could preserve the medicinal properties and maintain the efficacy it had when it was first made, which saved him the trouble of spending time on it.
"I just happen to need a container to hold my pills, and this gourd is perfect." Laozi casually put away the purple-gold gourd.
As they talked, the green gourd fell to the ground, and Yuanshi caught it with lightning speed. "Second brother thanks third brother for his generous gift." Despite the bickering, Yuanshi showed no mercy when it came to taking his younger brother's things.
"Take it, take it," Tongtian waved his hand, pulled off the green gourd himself, and hung it on his waist. "Chang Hao, what do you think? Green clothes and green gourd, they match quite well. The rest are yours, so hurry up and put them away."
Di Jun's eyes were deep and unfathomable. It was too inappropriate for the group to divide the gourd in front of the four of them.
"Fellow Daoist, don't you think this is a bit too much?" Di Jun said calmly, thinking to himself that he couldn't leave empty-handed after such a battle, as it concerned his ability to demonstrate and whether he could successfully get Nuwa and Fuxi to join the demon race. He couldn't be careless.
"How is that going too far?" Chang Hao then had something to say. "We don't lie to acquaintances. I swear to God, this innate gourd was indeed discovered by Tongtian and me thousands of years ago. We had already divided it up long ago, and we've only come to pick it today."
"First come, first served. What's left is mine. Di Jun, are you sure you want to snatch this treasure from me?" Chang Hao was itching to punch him.
For some reason, even though they were both Golden Crows, he just couldn't stand Di Jun and favored Tai Yi. Perhaps it was because Di Jun's majestic and noble demeanor, which was different from that of an immortal, always reminded Chang Hao of the past he disliked.
Or perhaps, it's a case of like repels like.
"Chang Hao, don't misunderstand, I believe what you said." Taiyi pulled on Dijun with all his might. He was also thinking of Dijun's best interests. Things were different now; his older brother was really no match for Chang Hao.
Out of respect for Taiyi, Chang Hao reluctantly abandoned his dangerous idea of beating up Dijun and turned to pack up his gourd.
"Chang Hao," Nuwa couldn't help but try to persuade herself, "could you give me the golden gourd? I can sense that it is destined for me."
Nuwa was taking a gamble: she was betting that Chang Hao was soft-hearted, that he would remember old feelings and gratitude, and that she hadn't misjudged him.
When Chang Hao saw Nuwa asking for it, he thought back to when he was at Buzhou Mountain. If it weren't for Nuwa, he didn't know what he would have encountered or what would have happened. Thinking of this, what was a golden gourd?
A golden light approached from afar, and Nuwa's expression brightened as she caught the golden gourd that Chang Hao had thrown at her.
Yuanshi frowned, glancing at Nuwa with an unfriendly expression.
"Chang Hao, you are truly loyal. I didn't save you for nothing." Nuwa was overjoyed. Chang Hao was so generous with a high-grade innate spiritual treasure. If there weren't so many people around, she would have loved to hug and kiss him.
Yuanshi slowly raised his eyebrows, realizing that Chang Hao had escaped disaster thanks to Nuwa's help. In that case, it was worthwhile to give her a magical treasure.
Chang Hao touched the yellow gourd and glanced at Taiyi out of the corner of his eye. If he hadn't been standing there, Taiyi would surely have had one of the two gourds. It seemed that he and Taiyi had some inexplicable connection.
Chang Hao pulled his hand back, simply folding his sleeves and waiting for it to fall freely. He also took the gourd to test his conjecture, to see if it was destined to become his master, and to let the gourd decide for itself.
The ripe yellow gourd fell from its stem and landed steadily in Chang Hao's hand. It bounced twice and spun around once.
Chang Hao did not restrain it. The yellow gourd seemed to realize something, sensed another aura, and flew unsteadily into Taiyi's hand.
Chang Hao's eyes flickered slightly, his gaze deepening, and he became even more certain of one thing. He carefully examined Taiyi again and again, and in the hazy light, the familiarity hidden deep in his soul could no longer be concealed.
Taiyi, unaware of the situation, assumed it was given to him by Chang Hao and, holding the gourd, asked helplessly, "Chang Hao, what's this?"
"Keep it," Chang Hao said with a smile in his eyes. "Consider it a thank you for the Chaos Bell." He was from a later era, but who could be sure that he wasn't a descendant of Taiyi?
Chang Hao had long suspected this and had evidence: he could control the Chaos Bell, his attribute was light, the sun was like his backyard, and he was so close to the Golden Crow!
With suspicion in mind, the more Chang Hao looked at Taiyi, the more familiar he felt—a deep-seated familiarity. Could he really be his father?
Yuanshi's expression darkened slightly. Giving it to Nuwa was one thing, but why give it to Taiyi? What merit or ability did Taiyi possess?
