Chapter 33
Xiao Mingzhu froze, and all the sounds around him seemed to disappear.
"Excuse me, I'll be right back." His tone was somewhat flustered, and he knew that he had revealed the fact that he had regained his memories.
So he rushed out of the crowd, beads of sweat on his forehead, his hands clenched tightly, constantly looking around for Jiang Wanwan.
Finally, he spotted the woman in the corner of the sofa.
He walked up to her, but his steps were unsteady, as if he were timid or at a loss.
After Jiang Wanwan discovered that the other party was A Xiao, she was initially surprised, but then she regained her composure and was genuinely happy for him to have regained his memories.
She originally wanted to ask him when he had thought of it, but seeing that he seemed very busy, she didn't go up to bother him.
Unexpectedly, the man chased after her, which surprised Jiang Wanwan and made her a little nervous.
The man has now become a business tycoon again. Judging from the expressions of the people around him, he is of a very high status and is no longer the Ah Xiao she knew.
Perhaps today is their farewell, and their last meeting.
"Congratulations, you should have regained your memories by now, right?" Jiang Wanwan broke the silence first, her smile sincere.
Even if she were oblivious, she would know that the other party's ability to appear here so effortlessly meant that everything had been arranged beforehand.
Although he had deceived her, he had also saved her before, so Jiang Wanwan was willing to be magnanimous and let bygones be bygones.
Xiao Mingzhu's lips were slightly pale. He stood in front of the woman, his body completely enveloping her.
"Wanwan, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to hide it from you, I just..."
Before he could finish speaking, the woman interrupted him.
Jiang Wanwan looked up at him, puzzled. "Why are you apologizing? This is a good thing, you can finally go home."
Judging from Jiang Wanwan's reaction, Xiao Mingzhu could clearly tell that she was genuinely happy.
What is she happy about? Is it because she can finally get rid of him?
Xiao Mingzhu's eyes darkened, his lips drooped, and his thin face appeared even more stern.
People around them began to cast glances their way. Jiang Wanwan took a step back and continued, "Mr. Xiao, I wish you a smooth road ahead in your life. Goodbye!"
Seeing the woman's distant behavior, Xiao Mingzhu's heart suddenly clenched, and even his pupils began to tremble slightly.
"Wanwan..." He wanted to call out to her, but she didn't give him a chance to speak and turned away. Only the fragrance in the air proved that Jiang Wanwan had been there.
Xiao Mingzhu's hands hung limply at his sides, his face so dark it looked like ink was about to drip from it. Everyone around him suddenly felt a chill and couldn't help but shiver, quickly averting their gaze.
He didn't know Jiang Wanwan would appear. If he had known beforehand, he definitely wouldn't have let her know the truth under these circumstances.
This is truly the worst possible situation!
Xiao Mingzhu slammed his fist against the wall. He hadn't felt this powerless and frustrated in a long time.
After saying goodbye to Xiao Mingzhu, Jiang Wanwan also looked around for her parents, only to find her father eating melons with other people!
They were really eating watermelon! Mr. Jiang was holding a watermelon in one hand and was about to hand a slice to Mrs. Jiang with the other. The two were chatting and laughing happily.
Jiang Wanwan was speechless. Had they forgotten that they had brought their daughter with them?
She almost became the target of everyone's criticism. Seeing that she and Xiao Mingzhu seemed to be very familiar with each other, everyone wanted to greet her and chat with her.
Jiang Wanwan disliked dealing with such situations, so she sent a message to her mother on her phone and then fled the scene.
The air outside was so fresh. Jiang Wanwan took a deep breath, hailed a taxi, and prepared to go home.
If she still couldn't see that Xiao Mingzhu was interested in her, then she would be truly stupid. But she couldn't reciprocate these feelings because she admired and respected him, but she wasn't moved by his affections.
She wasn't the type to be easily swayed by a man's sweet talk. Even if he was very good to her now, who could guarantee what would happen in ten or twenty years?
The unequal status between the two of them would lead to her utter defeat. Jiang Wanwan disliked this feeling of being controlled, so she needed to cut her losses in time.
On the way back, Jiang Wanwan also stopped by a pharmacy. Since one of their activities during their study tour to Wujing Town was riding a rowboat, she planned to buy some seasickness medicine just in case.
"Hello, what would you like to buy?" the pharmacist asked warmly.
After Jiang Wanwan finished explaining her request, while the other party went to get the medicine, she suddenly noticed a man wearing a mask and hat standing at the cashier.
The figure seemed strangely familiar to her. The man had obviously noticed Jiang Wanwan as well, but he didn't make a move. He just kept his head down and waited to pay.
"Kuang Ye?"
Jiang Wanwan took the initiative to step forward. After all, they had met so many times that they could be considered acquaintances.
However, Kuang Ye seemed not to hear him and did not respond until Jiang Wanwan called him again. Only then did he turn around, but his eyes no longer held the usual enthusiasm.
"Long time no see." Kuang Ye nodded to the woman.
The boy's indifferent reaction made Jiang Wanwan pause. She seemed to sense his aloofness and replied with "Long time no see" before falling silent.
Kuang Ye originally didn't want to have any more involvement with Jiang Wanwan, after all, he had seen her behaving intimately with another man when he took her home.
But now that Jiang Wanwan is ignoring him, he feels a stinging itch in his heart, like he's being stung by ants.
"Ding—" Payment completed.
After paying, Kuang Ye turned around with the plaster in his hand. He had twisted his hand a couple of days ago, so it was a little sore, and he planned to use the plaster.
"Sister, didn't your boyfriend come with you today? If it were me, I definitely wouldn't let my girlfriend come to buy medicine alone."
Kuang Ye's eyes were curved, but his words carried an aggressive tone, and it was unclear who he was implying.
Jiang Wanwan stood behind him, also ready to pay.
Hearing Kuang Ye's words, she looked up in confusion, "What boyfriend? I don't have a boyfriend."
It was then that she realized Kuang Ye was actually quite tall, at least half a head taller than her.
Upon hearing this, Kuang Ye paused for a moment, holding the plaster, before his lips curled into a smile that seemed more genuine than before.
"Who was the man who came downstairs to pick you up earlier?" Kuang Ye pressed on, as if he wanted to get to the bottom of it.
Jiang Wanwan thought for a while before realizing that he was talking about Xiao Mingzhu.
“Hmm…” Jiang Wanwan hesitated for a moment, because she really couldn’t explain so much to an outsider, nor could she explain why she would take in an adult male.
Therefore, I can only make a long story short.
“He was just someone I knew. He was sick and had nowhere to go, so I took him in for a few days. He has left now.”
Although she hasn't moved her things out yet, they were all things she bought. Given Xiao Mingzhu's lifestyle, she probably wouldn't even look at those things anymore.
Kuang Ye was surprised to find out the truth. His mood instantly brightened, and even the air around him felt fresher.
So he took off his mask, winked at Jiang Wanwan, and resumed his frivolous tone, "Sister, you're so kind. Could you take me in too?"
Hearing the other person's nonchalant tone, Jiang Wanwan knew he was joking. "No way."
Her home wasn't a shelter; taking in Xiao Mingzhu was purely accidental, and she didn't want to cause herself any more trouble.
Kuang Ye pursed his lips, but didn't tease Jiang Wanwan anymore.
Jiang Wanwan noticed that the boy was in a low mood today and asked, "Why did you suddenly come to the pharmacy? Are you hurt?"
Kuang Ye sensed the concern in the woman's eyes, and the corners of his mouth couldn't help but turn up, but he still stubbornly said, "It's nothing, my hand just hurts."
"Your hand hurts? What happened?" Jiang Wanwan continued to ask.
Upon hearing this, Kuang Ye suddenly revealed a wicked smile, leaned close to Jiang Wanwan's ear and whispered something, causing the woman's ears to turn bright red instantly.
"You...you..." Jiang Wanwan was so embarrassed that she couldn't speak. She stomped her foot on the spot and then turned and ran away.
"Hahahaha—" The boy burst into laughter, feeling great as he looked at the woman's shy expression.
He didn't come to his senses until the woman's figure was completely out of sight. He put the plaster in his sweatshirt pocket and left the pharmacy.
When Jiang Wanwan returned home, she found a figure lingering at the door.
She was extremely nervous and a little scared, but when the motion-activated lights on the stairs came on, Jiang Wanwan breathed a sigh of relief.
"Mr. Xiao, what brings you here?"
Xiao Mingzhu's heart skipped a beat when he heard the woman address him so distantly.
He gazed into the woman's eyes, his tone tinged with grievance, but he knew he couldn't push her too far. "Does this mean we won't be friends anymore after I regain my memories?"
Jiang Wanwan was speechless for a moment, but looking into the man's stubborn eyes, she felt that she still needed to make things clear to him.
So Jiang Wanwan unlocked the door and invited the man into the house.
At opposite ends of the table, two people stared at each other, their gazes resembling a confrontation or trial.
Jiang Wanwan took a deep breath, her eyes slightly helpless. "Mr. Xiao, it would be my honor to become your friend, but there are limits to friendship."
She said those words because after entering the house, she discovered that there were many things in the house that did not belong to her.
Exquisite antique vases, mountains of jewelry on the coffee table, even the living room is piled high with boxes of haute couture gowns...
In Xiao Mingzhu's eyes, liking someone means treating her well, showering her with money, and making her a princess who is cherished.
But he forgot that Jiang Wanwan was able to face difficulties at work head-on and boldly fight back against danger... She was not a parasitic vine that needed to depend on others to survive.
On the contrary, she is very smart and has many ideas, but her boldness has always been suppressed. Only someone who truly understands her can peel back her shell and touch her most authentic self.
For the first time, Xiao Mingzhu felt defeated in front of a woman, because he discovered that what he was so proud of was exactly what Jiang Wanwan despised the most.
But he still refused to give up, so he stopped beating around the bush and stared directly into the woman's eyes, saying affectionately, "Wanwan, I like you."
