Chapter 9 Kunning Palace

Crown Prince

When Rong Qi appeared, Rong Xi was reading a book in the pavilion.

"What wind blew the young master Rong here?" Rong Xi's gentle face curled into a smile.

Rong Qi picked up the tea on the table, tilted his head back, and drank it down.

"It's the northwest wind."

Rong Xi chuckled: "Is there something you need to do at the palace this time? You usually wouldn't come unless it's something important."

A smile appeared on Rong Qi's stunningly beautiful face, a smile that could eclipse the world.

Rong Xi became even more curious.

Rong Qi: "Imperial decree of marriage."

"Cough cough cough..."

Rong Xi choked on the tea and coughed incessantly.

"You've got some ambition." Rong Qi glanced at him, poured him a cup of tea, and tried to calm him down.

After finishing his tea, Rong Xi pressed on, "A marriage decree? Who decreed a marriage for you? And with whom?"

Rong Qi: "If it wasn't me, could it be you?"

Rong Xi was shocked: "You actually got Father to arrange a marriage for you? Which young lady saved you?"

Rong Qi was about to say something, but then suddenly remembered what his beloved Jiao Jiao had said.

"It's not time to make it public yet. You'll find out when the time comes."

"Oh, you're keeping it a secret? That's no fun."

Rong Xi was extremely curious about this woman. He wondered who had managed to take away such a powerful figure; it was truly remarkable.

"Sister Xiao'er is also in the Empress Dowager's palace today. Come down and have a meal with us."

Rong Qi: "Yes, my uncle has already given the instructions."

Rong Xi nodded, thinking that Rong Qi had finally come all this way. Given his father's personality, he should stay for a meal before leaving.

Rong Qi and Rong Xi stayed in the East Palace until almost noon before going to Kunning Palace for their meal.

Empress Lin Yiran received a notice early on that Rong Qi and the Emperor would be having lunch, and instructed the palace servants to prepare a large table of delicious food.

Sure enough, when Rong Qi and Rong Xi arrived, the table was already full of food.

"Qi'er and Huang'er have arrived, please have a seat."

"Mother, Aunt."

Hearing Rong Qi's address, the Empress's eyes reddened again.

A pretty and lively girl walked up to her mother and said softly, "Mother, my cousin has come all this way, what are you doing?"

Upon hearing her daughter's voice, the Empress quickly wiped away the tears that hadn't yet fallen from the corners of her eyes.

"Yes, yes, Xiao'er is right. It's just that Mother is too sad."

Seeing that his mother was no longer sad, Rong Xiao quickly changed the subject.

"Cousin, did you come to see Father Emperor today because of something important?" Rong Xiao asked playfully.

"Xiao'er is really clever. Your cousin came to ask the Emperor to grant you a marriage." Rong Xi said as if he knew.

Rong Qi glared at him.

Rong Xiao: "Wow, my cousin actually got Father Emperor to grant him a marriage, this is a huge deal."

"That's great news, Qi'er. Which family's young lady is she?"

The Empress was naturally delighted to hear this.

"Yes, who is it, cousin?"

Rong Qi shook his head: "It's a secret for now, you'll find out later."

"Cousin, you're so mean, you said it and then didn't."

"Hahaha, who offended our Xiao'er? Let me see. Father will avenge you." Rong Yuan walked in with a beaming smile.

Just as the group was about to bow, His Majesty the Emperor waved them off.

"Hmph, Father, it's my cousin. He didn't even tell me who he's marrying. He's so mean. Father, please tell me! Father definitely knows." Rong Xiao flattered while acting coquettishly.

"Uh... well, Father knows, but Father has already promised your cousin to keep it a secret. Xiao'er wouldn't want Father to be seen as a person who breaks his promise, would she?"

Rong Yuan could only use Rong Qi as a shield.

Rong Xiao let go of her father's arm, pouting in protest: "Hmph, you're all bad people. I'm ignoring you."

Seeing the adorable Rong Xiao's sullen expression, the mood of everyone in the hall improved.

Laughter and merriment filled Kunning Palace, but the other palaces were not so pleasant, especially Li Wanyue's residence in Yanxi Palace.

Li Wanyue heard from the palace servants that Rong Qi had gone to Kunning Palace, and that His Majesty, the Crown Prince, and the Princess were all there. Enraged, she smashed many more decorative items.

The family of several people seemed to be living happily together.

She had just been released from confinement and hadn't even had a chance to spend time with her son when she heard that he had been sent by the Emperor to provide disaster relief.

That's a village on the border, with harsh conditions and a famine. How will her son, who has been pampered since childhood, survive?

She suspected that His Majesty wanted to prevent his son from meeting Rong Qi. Otherwise, any official could have been sent to the disaster area. Why did he have to send a noble prince to represent the emperor's will?

In fact, Li Wanyue guessed completely right.

The Emperor was in the Imperial Study, disliking Rong Mian, when a minister came to report that a small village in a remote area was suffering from famine and requested His Majesty to issue an edict to send troops to provide assistance.

This gave the Emperor a perfect outlet for his anger, so he immediately decided to send Rong Mian.

As for what Rong Mian wanted to report, he didn't care at all.

After this matter was resolved, Rong Yuan was no longer annoyed, and his anger subsided. That's why he let out a hearty laugh at the entrance of Kunning Palace just now.

The people in Yanxi Palace were already used to Li Wanyue's temper. After all, as servants, their job was simply to serve their mistress well; other matters were none of their concern.

Only the head palace maid, Hongmu, might be heard by the Imperial Concubine. After all, she was brought in from her maiden family, so her words carried more weight than those of ordinary people.

At this moment, Hongmu whispered something in Li Wanyue's ear, and the Imperial Concubine nodded repeatedly upon hearing it.

I bet they're plotting something nasty.

In the distance, in an inconspicuous corner, a young eunuch witnessed the entire process.
