Chapter 49 Smashing the Signboard

Chapter 49 Smashing the Signboard

"It's not a good habit to embarrass yourself by taking things for no reason." Du Huaizhi put the rouge box on an empty table next to him.

"What do you care!" Han Qingli angrily tried to make excuses for herself, "I just wanted to test your strength."

The corner of Du Huaizhi's mouth twitched slightly, and he slowly adjusted his sleeves. "Then why don't you try again, Miss? Gold, jade, anything will do."

"Hmph, I'm tired." Han Qingli sat down on the bed and fanned herself vigorously with a round fan, as if that could blow away the anger in her heart. "Go out, I need to take a nap."

Du Huaizhi nodded slightly, stood up and was about to leave but was stopped again.

"Wait!" Han Qingli bit her lip, her eyes wandering. "Forget it, just stay in the room, but don't make any noise and disturb my sleep."

Du Huaizhi paused, looked back at her with a subtle look, but said nothing and sat back obediently.

Han Qingli was satisfied.

As night fell, Du Huaizhi sat cross-legged on the couch in the outer room, closing her eyes to rest. Suddenly, she moved her ears slightly and heard a rustling sound coming from the inner room.

Du Huaizhi opened her eyes and in a flash she was in front of the inner room door. She raised her hand and knocked gently, "Miss."

It was dead silent inside.

Du Huaizhi frowned slightly and pushed the door open. A black shadow flashed before him, and Du Huaizhi pulled out Broken Cloud and chopped it off.

The two bright white shadows collided, illuminating the darkness with starlight. Taking advantage of this gap, Du Huaizhi was able to see that the shadow was a masked man. There was no sound of Han Qingli's breathing in the room.

Du Huaizhi's expression turned cold, as if his signboard had been smashed on his first job. He swung his long knife and attacked fiercely, with each knife strike going straight for the masked man's vital points.

The man saw that it was just an ordinary-looking woman and had let his guard down, but he didn't expect that the woman would be so cruel.

The blade flashed like snow, slicing through the darkness in sharp arcs. The masked man hastily blocked the blow, the clang of metal clashing piercing the still night. Unable to defend himself, he was forced to retreat repeatedly, his back slamming against the cabinet.

"Where is the person?" Du Huaizhi's voice was as cold as ice, and the Broken Cloud Sword in his hand was firmly against the man's throat.

A trace of horror flashed across the man's eyes, but suddenly his brows curved, "Guess." Before he finished speaking, he suddenly raised his hand and threw out three triangular darts with blue light from his sleeve.

Du Huaizhi's figure flashed, and the dart brushed past the corner of his clothes and nailed into the screen behind him. The wood instantly turned a strange purple-black color.

poisonous.

Du Huaizhi narrowed her eyes slightly.

In the blink of an eye, the man had already broken through the window and escaped. Du Huaizhi did not hesitate to give chase. The night wind blew against his face, and in the moonlight, he saw the dark figure leap up the wall in a few steps.

"You're courting death by competing with me in speed." Du Huaizhi flashed over in a few seconds and swung the Broken Cloud in his hand forward.

"Ah!!" The masked man screamed as his thigh was pierced by a long knife and he fell from the wall.

Du Huaizhi flew down beside the man and stepped on his chest. "I'll ask you one last time, where is he?"

Black blood flowed out of the man's mouth and he grinned, "It's... too late..." After saying that, he suddenly convulsed all over and died in the blink of an eye.

Du Huaizhi squatted down, pulled out Duanyun, opened the man's collar, and saw a tiger head mark on his collarbone.

"Bastards from the Tiger Head Gang." Du Huaizhi gritted his teeth.

Outside the stable, two men in black were stuffing a twisting sack into the carriage.

"Hurry up, don't get discovered." One of them whispered.

A cold light flashed, and his voice abruptly stopped. The other man turned back in horror, only to see a line of blood bursting from his companion's throat. Behind him, in the moonlight, stood a woman in plain clothes, holding a snow-white long knife in her hand, the tip of the knife dripping with blood.

The man in black suddenly pulled the sack over, and put the dagger against the bag's opening. "I am a member of the Tiger Head Gang. If you come any closer, I will—"

His eyes suddenly widened. The woman before him vanished like a ghost, and the next moment, a piercing chill ran down his back.

Looking down, he saw a bloody knife tip sticking out of his chest.

Han Qingli, who was in the sack, heard the dull thud of a heavy object falling to the ground. She was a little dazed and didn't dare to move. Then the rope was cut cleanly. The moment fresh air rushed in, she saw Du Huaizhi's bloodstained profile, and her eyes immediately filled with tears.

"Can you walk?" Du Huaizhi pulled out the cloth ball stuffed in her mouth.

"Why did you come just now?" Han Qingli's tears rolled down, leaving two marks on her dirty little face.

Du Huaizhi looked at Han Qingli's tear-stained face and sighed in his heart. He had only known her for less than a day and she had already cried twice in front of him.

He reached out and pulled Han Qingli out of the sack, took out the handkerchief he found in her room, and wiped the tears from Han Qingli's face with it. He comforted her stiffly, "Don't cry."

After a pause, he added, "Ugly."

Han Qingli cried even harder when she heard that, "You...you you you, you actually said that I'm ugly? I was almost kidnapped, and you still said I'm ugly." She spoke incoherently, obviously very angry.

Du Huaizhi was giving Han Qingli a headache because of her crying. Just as he was about to speak, he suddenly felt something and raised his knife to protect Han Qingli behind him. There was a chaotic sound of footsteps in the distance, and the light of the torch was getting closer and closer.

"Miss!" came the housekeeper's anxious voice.

Han Qingli hurriedly wiped away her tears and shouted, "I'm here!!"

The housekeeper and a group of servants came forward holding torches. The light of the fire revealed the bodies of two men in black on the ground, as well as the undried blood on Du Huaizhi's knife. Everyone was shocked.

"Miss, are you okay?" The housekeeper stepped forward quickly and saw Han Qingli with disheveled clothes and tear marks on her face. He felt distressed and looked at Du Huaizhi with some confusion. He had never seen this middle-aged woman before.

"This is..."

"Isn't she the bodyguard you found?" Han Qingli's voice was still a little choked, but she tried her best to maintain her ladylike demeanor. "Thanks to her tonight, otherwise you wouldn't be able to see me."

The housekeeper suddenly realized that the young lady had found a new guard, but he had not expected it to be an ordinary-looking middle-aged woman. The housekeeper looked at Du Huaizhi with a little more respect and hurriedly bowed, saying, "Thank you very much, guard, for saving the young lady. When you return, the Han Mansion will definitely reward you handsomely."

Du Huaizhi nodded slightly, retracted his long knife and wiped the blood, "It's my job."

Back in the bedroom, Han Qingli was surrounded by maids to wash and change her clothes. Her red and swollen eyes were reflected in the bronze mirror. Thinking of Du Huaizhi's word "ugly" just now, she poked the cheek of the person in the mirror angrily and annoyed.

She turned around and asked the maidservant, "Am I ugly?"

"Miss, what nonsense are you talking about?" The maid held up a hot handkerchief she had just wrung out, her tone filled with genuine envy. "You are one of the most beautiful women in the capital. So many young men have longed to have a glimpse of you, but they haven't been able to catch your eye."
