Chapter 9: Got beaten away
"Sister, let me help you get some things." Du Ruozhi suggested, looking eagerly at the wooden box on Du Huaizhi's back. She had carried this thing once before, and it was very heavy.
Du Huaizhi kept walking: "You can't lift it."
Those four short words interrupted Du Ruozhi's desire to help. Recalling the embarrassing moment when they first met, Du Ruozhi shut up and muttered to herself, "I'm not that weak."
Soon after leaving the city, the road became gradually desolate. Du Ruozhi felt more and more uneasy. She always felt that there was a pair of eyes staring at her from behind. She wanted to grab Du Huaizhi's hand, but she didn't dare. She could only get as close as possible.
Du Huaizhi walked very fast. He carried a heavy pancake stall on his back and walked for several miles. He was still as brisk as ever, and even his breathing rhythm did not change.
Meanwhile, Du Ruozhi, the pampered girl from childhood, was already panting, the distance between them growing wider and wider. Her hair was soaked with sweat, and she no longer tried to maintain her appearance, simply wiping it away with her sleeve.
Just as her vision was temporarily blocked, when Du Ruozhi looked forward again, Du Huaizhi had disappeared.
Du Ruozhi stood there, looking around in confusion. Her elder sister was clearly right in front of her just now, how could she disappear in the blink of an eye?
"Sister?" she called softly, her voice trembling.
The only sound in response was the rustling of leaves in the wind.
Du Ruozhi clenched the corner of her clothes and forced herself to calm down. She continued walking along the path, thinking that her sister might just be walking too fast and was waiting for her ahead.
Just after she walked away, a man dressed as a waiter emerged from behind a bush. If Du Ruozhi saw his face, she would recognize him as a waiter from the "Penglai Inn".
Looking at Du Ruozhi's lonely back, the waiter said in annoyance: "What a pity, one of them ran away. I should have taken action earlier." The price of a single beauty is much lower than that of a pair of sisters.
The man was so angry that his liver ached when he thought about the money he had lost.
"What are you looking at?"
A cold female voice drifted from behind him. The man froze, feeling an invisible pressure that made it impossible for him to utter a single sound. He mechanically turned his head slowly.
Seeing that he had difficulty turning his head, the person behind him kindly helped him and turned his head around.
The sounds of breaking bones and cracking muscles rang out in the woods. The guy's body collapsed to the ground, his eyes wide open, and his head looked at the sky in a strangely twisted posture.
Du Huaizhi picked up the body of the waiter, and a wooden sign fell out from his clothes. Du Huaizhi looked at the sign with a dark look in his eyes.
Dragging the corpse into the depths of the forest, Du Huaizhi threw it into the wolf den without hesitation. He stood beside the den, watching the corpse being torn apart by the wolves, playing with the wooden token in his hand.
Heaven and Earth Society.
He turned the token a few times in his hand, then he closed his five fingers and the token instantly broke into pieces.
After dealing with the body, Du Huaizhi returned the same way. On the way, he met Du Ruozhi who was sitting under a tree, hugging him and crying.
Du Ruozhi caught a glimpse of someone approaching from the corner of her eye, sniffed, and looked over with a pair of tearful eyes. When she saw who it was, she cried even more aggrievedly.
"Sister..." Du Ruozhi stood up, trotted towards Du Huaizhi, and hugged her slender waist, "Wuwuwu...Sister, where have you been? I thought you really abandoned me."
Du Huaizhi was forced to step back by this sudden attack. She really didn't like such close contact. She frowned and tried to pry the hands around her waist, but failed. Instead, she was hugged tighter. Her clothes on her chest were soaked with tears.
"Let go." Du Huaizhi scolded her coldly.
Du Ruozhi shrank back and let her go silently, "Sister..." With a pair of crystal tearful eyes and a pink tip of her delicate nose, she stared at Du Huaizhi pitifully.
Du Huaizhi: “…”
He picked up a small pile of firewood he had picked up on the road and put it into Du Ruozhi's arms. "Take this." After that, he started walking forward.
Du Ruozhi wiped her tears and trotted after her, "Sister, did you catch the bad guys just now?"
Du Huaizhi glanced at her and said, "So you knew someone was following you."
It was like looking at a child who knew nothing, and who was obviously not much older than herself. Du Ruozhi was unhappy, "I found him on the street."
Du Huaizhi rarely praised, "That's not too stupid."
"Of course I'm not stupid." Du Ruozhi answered hurriedly, "The teachers in the school have all praised me for my intelligence and that I can learn things quickly." After saying this, Du Ruozhi felt a little guilty. In fact, not all the teachers had praised me.
Du Huaizhi ignored her.
Du Ruozhi asked, "What happened to that bad guy?"
"He was beaten away."
Du Ruozhi looked at Du Huaizhi with admiration, "Sister, you are so amazing!"
Du Huaizhi turned her head, the admiration in her eyes didn't seem fake, "Don't you think it's vulgar for a woman to practice martial arts?"
"Why do you feel that way?" Du Ruozhi's eyes were blank. When her elder sister left, the feeling that made her uneasy also disappeared. At that time, Du Ruozhi vaguely guessed where her elder sister had gone. Instead, she was only worried about Du Huaizhi.
Du Huaizhi stopped talking, and the two fell into silence.
On the way, Du Huaizhi picked up a larger pile of firewood.
Du Ruozhi looked at what she was holding in her arms, then at what Du Huaizhi was holding. She wanted to say something but stopped herself, and in the end she said nothing.
As the two of them passed through the mountains and forests, the view suddenly opened up. Du Ruozhi recognized at a glance that this was the village where Du Huaizhi lived, and sighed in her heart.
It's finally here.
There are not many residents in the village. Due to years of war, the young and middle-aged people in the village were either conscripted or moved elsewhere with their families, leaving behind some old men and women who were left unattended. Du Huaizhi is one of the few young people here.
"Huaizhi girl, you just came back from the county?" Old Mrs. Zhao, who was sitting at the gate of the courtyard watching the sunset, saw Du Huaizhi and a kind smile appeared on her old face.
Du Huaizhi nodded in response and calmly put the firewood in her hand aside. Du Ruozhi, who was blocked by her figure, poked her head out and waved to Old Lady Zhao, "Hello, Grandma."
The pretty little girl was very pleasing. Old Lady Zhao's cloudy eyes lit up a little and she asked, "Who is this little girl? She's so pretty."
Du Ruozhi answered before Du Huaizhi could, "I'm Ruozhi, elder sister's younger sister. I'm here to take elder sister home."
Old Mrs. Zhao smiled and nodded, saying hello several times.
"Hey, sister, wait for me." Du Ruozhi chatted for a few words, and Du Huaizhi had already walked away. She hurriedly said goodbye to Old Lady Zhao and trotted to catch up.
Du Huaizhi was tall and had long legs, so Du Ruozhi had to jog to barely catch up with him.
