Zuo Fugui’s questions were like cannonballs, making the already complex feelings in Lu Nanchen’s heart even more so. He had never felt so lost. Yet, he hadn’t done any of the things that Zuo Fugui had mentioned.
From both a practical and theoretical standpoint, he really didn’t know how to love someone else or consider his wife’s feelings.
"...No."
Now it was the other end of the phone that went silent. After Zuo Fugui didn’t say anything for more than two minutes, his tone of voice was so incredulous that it seemed as if he was questioning life itself as he sat on the sofa. It felt absurd.
"You’ve been married for five months, and not once have you...?"
"...Yeah."
He had not had any intentions before, and recently there had been no opportunity.
"..."
Several minutes of silence passed again. Zuo Fugui sat on the sofa with a solemn expression on his face, contemplating a question. His eyes would dilate and then constrict intermittently. He had never been this serious or solemn, even during his college entrance exam preparation.
"Lu Bro...tell me honestly, are you unable to perform?"
Lu Nanchen: ...
Zuo Fugui’s words were so suggestive that he had purposely lowered his voice towards the end, as if sharing a secret with Lu Nanchen.
Lu Nanchen’s face was filled with complicated emotions.
"I can."
"And then what?"
Zuo Fugui’s question stumped Lu Nanchen again, leaving him staring blankly while sitting in front of his desk.
And then?
Then nothing had happened.
"What’s the difference between you and a nanny right now? If I were her, I’d want to divorce you."
"Forget it, I’ll bring you some treasures later, you need to learn properly."
Zuo Fugui sighed and resigned to the fact that Lu Nanchen had been like this for more than a day or two. The mention of these things quickly reminded him of something, and his eyes lit up.
Soon after he hung up, Zuo Fugui grabbed his car keys and visited several bookstores before heading to find Lu Nanchen.
By the time Zuo Fugui arrived in his flashy red sports car at Lu Nanchen’s faculty dormitory, more than an hour had passed. It was now dusk, the sky was ablaze with the setting sun, temperatures fell as day turned into night, and the breeze carried a trace of chill.
Thump thump thump.
Zuo Fugui knocked on the door.
Lu Nanchen stood up to open it and saw Zuo Fugui was holding a stack of books in one hand and a sack in the other. The corners of several books were visible through the white sack; it appeared as if there were a dozen books or so.
Without waiting for a response, Zuo Fugui walked past Lu Nanchen, went straight into the dormitory, and dumped the books on the neighboring corridor floor.
Having delivered his heavy load, Zuo Fugui took a few steps inside the room, dropped onto a chair panting heavily, and pointed at the pile of books, saying: "Give them a good read and learn."
Lu Nanchen looked from Zuo Fugui to the pile of books, a little puzzled.
He walked up to the stack and squatted down, picking up the top book.
