"Mmhm, you can find a seat nearby and wait for me, it will be alright. The examination won’t have any issues."
Yu Ting turned her head towards Lu Nanchen and said, slightly raising a smile.
After a moment of pause, Lu Nanchen, whose hands were naturally hanging by his sides, fingers fiddling slightly, responded, "Alright, I’ll wait here for you. Come find me when you’re done."
"Okay."
Yu Ting responded with a light smile and waved at Lu Nanchen before leaving.
Lu Nanchen stared at Yu Ting’s retreating figure until she completely disappeared from his sight. He then found a conspicuous spot among the four rows of iron chairs outside the outpatient clinic and sat down, his back straightened, embarking on a long wait.
Many other men sat beside him, accompanying their wives to the hospital just like him, either engrossed in their phones or whispering to each other.
Soft murmurs buzzed in his ears.
The consultation continued, with pregnant women constantly going in and coming out.
"My child’s father, the examination results are out. The doctor says that there are indeed signs of a miscarriage. I’ve been asked to stay in the hospital for observation for a few days to see if this baby can be saved."
A pregnant woman with a large belly emerged from the room. She walked a little awkwardly even with the nurse’s support. Her face was pale, as she tenderly held her belly with a pained expression.
The child’s father quickly ran from Lu Nanchen’s side towards the woman, only managing to support her when he reached her side. With clear panic and fear in his voice, he said, "We should get you admitted to the hospital immediately. We can’t lose the child."
"My stomach hurts so much, my child’s father."
The woman had not walked far when she suddenly winced in agony, called out, and halted her steps. Sweating profusely, she hunched over where she stood.
Her figure bent progressively lower as she continued wailing in pain.
This all happened right in front of Lu Nanchen.
From Lu Nanchen’s angle, he could see thick blood trickling down the woman’s legs, staining the white floor tiles, a horrifying sight to behold.
Lu Nanchen: ....
Upon seeing this, the nurse at his side hurriedly called for colleagues. Together, they helped the woman onto a gurney and quickly transferred her from the outpatient department to the inpatient ward nearby.
The blood from the woman’s legs instantly stained the blue hospital bed, a shocking red image searing into Lu Nanchen’s eyes.
"It hurts so much, my child’s father."
"My stomach hurts so much."
"Ah."
"Is it that I won’t be able to keep the child?"
"No, no, it’s going to be alright. Don’t overthink it."
In places unseen, contractions were in progress. The woman, drenched in sweat, clutched the bedsheets tightly. Her lips turned pale, occasionally letting out cries of pain.
"It hurts so much...."
"Hold on, my child’s mother, hold on, things will get better soon."
All of this unfolded before Lu Nanchen as the woman’s cries and the sound of the gurney wheels receded into the distance.
Only a small pool of blood remained on the floor.
Lu Nanchen: ............
Without thinking, he straightened his back even more, sitting upright and solemn.
After the noise diminished for a moment, the murmurings of people next to him resumed.
"I’m afraid the child has to be aborted."
"Probably, look at how much blood she just lost."
"Tsk tsk."
"But at least she’s still alive. Even if they lose this one, they can still have another."
"Right. I have a relative who had a severe hemorrhage during a cesarean section. Sadly, neither the child nor mother survived, and she was only in her twenties!"
"Tsk, it’s frightening."
Lu Nanchen: .........
