Chapter 86 Heartache
When Xie Yanning received the message, he was on his way to class. He took it out, glanced at it, and smiled slightly.
Su Wanwan can be quite adorable at times.
Accompanying me was Professor Huang, a more senior professor. Seeing his expression, I jokingly asked, "Girlfriend?"
Xie Yanning smiled and nodded, "Yes."
"Oh dear," Professor Huang exclaimed, "Youth is truly wonderful," then asked, "When will you bring it to us for a look?"
"If there's a chance, yes."
Professor Huang also has some of the common problems of middle-aged and elderly people these days; he can be a bit preachy at times, saying things like, "When are you going to settle this? You're not young anymore."
He and Su Wanwan had only been dating for a short time, and he hadn't really considered when to get married.
Professor Huang, speaking with the air of someone who's been through it all, said, "Isn't this just playing around if it's not based on marriage?"
Xie Yanning: "..."
I did act like a thug, but I never intended to just act like a thug.
Back in the classroom, there were still a few minutes before the bell rang.
Xie Yanning took some time to send a message to Su Wanwan.
I've never seen such adorable cows and horses before.
However, Su Wanwan did not reply.
She now has a feeling of impending death.
Several patients with aortic dissection were brought to the emergency room that morning, all of them in critical condition. Even the hospital director, who was on vacation, was called back.
We're short-handed, and lives are at stake.
Nan Sisi was so tired that her eyes were glazed over.
I feel like my entire soul has been ripped away.
Although they were just assistants, they couldn't be negligent at all. Even after getting off the operating table, their backs were straight.
I stood from morning till night, only managing to eat two pieces of bread and have a cup of coffee during my breaks to keep going.
Not to mention that the two of them also worked a night shift.
"I'm still alive simply because I'm young," Nan Sisi concluded.
Su Wanwan deeply agreed.
Jiang Zhaoyue, an intern, was also exhausted and her face was ashen.
Director Chen looked at them, his 37-degree tongue stubbornly uttering cold words, "I know you're very tired, but you still need to take care of the patients. Thank you for your hard work."
It's not that she's cold-blooded and heartless, but things always need to be done, and no one can be idle.
Xie Yanning sent her several messages, but received no response.
Finally, having no other choice, I said, "Let me know when you're off work, and I'll pick you up."
Xie Yanning waited in the study until eight or nine o'clock in the evening before receiving Su Wanwan's call.
On the phone, Su Wanwan's voice was very nasal, and she only said a few simple words, "Come over here."
Then I hung up the phone.
She didn't want to say another word.
Even on a late autumn night, the hospital entrance was still bustling with people.
This is the place closest to life and death.
Su Wanwan pulled her coat tighter, found a spot on a flower bed and sat down, staring blankly ahead.
When Xie Yanning arrived, he saw Su Wanwan huddled there looking pitiful, and he felt both sorry for her and amused.
He walked over and said, "Wanwan."
Su Wanwan looked up, her face showing little reaction. After a while, she said, "You're here. It's so cold." Then she snuggled into his arms.
Xie Yanning hugged her tightly, "Let's go back first."
Without saying much, he pulled the person towards the car.
With the car heater on, Su Wanwan felt even sleepier as the warm air blew.
She forced herself to cheer up, and then declared defeat.
I'm so tired.
Xie Yanning said, "Take a rest, you'll be back soon."
There weren't many cars at night, so it only took five or six minutes to get there.
When she got off the bus, Su Wanwan almost lost her balance.
Xie Yanning simply picked him up and carried him upstairs.
Su Wanwan yawned, "Professor Xie, you've really worked hard."
"Eat something before you sleep," Xie Yanning said.
Upon arriving in the living room, Xie Yanning placed the person on the dining table and brought out the food that had been kept warm.
Su Wanwan rested her chin on her hand, watching his figure: "You look like the fairy godmother."
“Nobody’s as big as me.” Xie Yanning said without turning his head.
Su Wanwan laughed.
Seeing that she could barely open her eyes, Xie Yanning simply fed her bite by bite.
With someone feeding her, Su Wanwan ate very attentively.
I only had the energy to talk after I had eaten enough. "I used to be this busy when I was in school. Back then, I would just eat a couple of bites of bread by myself, and I was just trying to make sure I didn't starve."
"Makes my heart ache?"
"Does it hurt your heart?"
Xie Yanning sighed, "It's heartbreaking. If we had both been in the US back then, we might have met sooner."
Perhaps then so many years wouldn't have been wasted.
Su Wanwan thought for a moment and said, "Actually, I did consider going to Harvard Medical School, but the professor I wanted to follow went to Europe, so I had to go with him."
“My parents also want me to go there, saying that Brother Haoyan is there too, and maybe he can take care of me.”
Xie Yanning: "..."
It's probably a good thing I didn't go.
Shang Haoyan gave him the feeling that he would not give up until he achieved his goal.
Su Wanwan was unaware that Xie Yanning already knew about Shang Haoyan's feelings, and spoke of it without any remorse.
"Brother Haoyan, you're calling me that so affectionately?" Xie Yanning asked in a nonchalant tone.
"Is Professor Xie jealous?" Su Wanwan teased, "Haven't you heard the saying, 'Childhood sweethearts can't beat newcomers'?"
"Then why don't you call me brother?"
“Didn’t I call him that?” Su Wanwan leaned closer to him. “Didn’t I call him brother at times?”
Xie Yanning was so angry she wanted to grind her teeth.
Knowing full well that there's nothing she can do, she's still trying to provoke him.
After eating, Su Wanwan rested for a while before washing up and going to bed.
Xie Yanning still had some work to do, and after finishing with Su Wanwan, he was already fast asleep.
Su Wanwan is in a good position; she rarely suffers from insomnia.
He held Su Wanwan in his arms and fell asleep as well.
Su Wanwan was woken up by the heat.
When she opened her eyes, she found Xie Yanning's arms were wrapped tightly around her.
She didn't know where he got the strength from in his sleep, but Su Wanwan struggled for a moment before managing to free her hand.
Once awake, Su Wanwan couldn't fall back asleep.
The nightlight by the bed showed it was only a little past four.
She idly played with Xie Yanning's hair. His hair wasn't very long and was rather stiff, so it felt a bit prickly in her hand.
Su Wan usually wears a nightgown to bed, and her outstretched arms glow white in the night.
Xie Yanning doesn't snore or grind her teeth when she sleeps.
His breath brushed against her forehead, making Su Wanwan feel a little itchy. She wanted to pull back a little, but this probably triggered some kind of conditioned reflex in Xie Yanning, who hugged her even tighter.
Then Su Wanwan dared not move.
Su Wanwan let herself go.
She understands human instincts.
Perhaps lacking a proper method, Xie Yanning's brows furrowed slightly.
Su Wanwan suddenly found Xie Yanning somewhat adorable.
Just as she was about to do something mischievous, a slightly hoarse voice came from above her head, "Aren't you tired?"
