Chapter 06 Chapter 6
The next day, Ren Li did not see Wen Shuo on the school bus.
But fortunately, she didn't go to the wrong classroom again today. When Ren Li opened the back door of the classroom, she saw Wen Shuo already sitting there.
If she went through the back door, she would have to pass Wen Shuo to get to her seat. Ren Li didn't want to bother Wen Shuo, so she went to the front door first, walked through the aisle, and then returned to her seat.
As soon as she sat down, Zhang Xintong came in with a bag of bread. Ren Li smiled and said "Good morning" to her.
When Ren Li spoke, her voice was always very light and soft, and the ending sound of the word "morning" was a little stretched out. Wen Shuo was browsing his mobile phone nearby, and when he heard this, his hand that was pressing the keys paused subconsciously for a moment.
"Li Li, would you like some milk?" Zhang Xintong took two boxes and wanted to give one to Ren Li.
Ren Li: "Thank you, I've already eaten."
Zhang Xintong said "oh" and placed the remaining box on Zhou Qi's desk. "Give it to Zhou Qi, so he can supplement his brain."
Ren Li couldn't help but laugh, then he remembered that he hadn't handed in his homework yet. Fortunately, there was no math class in the evening study session yesterday, which meant that he didn't have to deal with Wen Shuo today.
It’s hard to say why, but Ren Li felt that she always had a natural resistance to Wen Shuo.
There was a math class in the morning. For some reason, Teacher He seemed to be very caring towards Ren Li today. He also asked Ren Li to stand up and answer questions. Ren Li answered very well. Then Teacher He praised Ren Li for her good performance in recent days, such as her attentive listening and serious attitude towards learning.
After hearing this, Ren Li blushed again. She didn't want to be the focus of the class, especially since she had just transferred here and felt that there was still a gap between her and the other students in the class.
Later, after class and physical exercise, a group of people gathered outside the back door - they seemed to be looking for Wen Shuo.
Ren Li didn't know them, and didn't really care what they were doing there. But during the class, a few of them were holding up their phones to take pictures, looking over from time to time. Ren Li felt a little uncomfortable, so she asked Zhang Xintong if she wanted to go to the bathroom together, and then she fled the classroom.
As soon as she left, Cheng Yuhang patted Wen Shuo on the shoulder and said, "Brother Shuo, didn't you take the school bus this morning?"
Wen Shuo: "Yeah, my mom sent me here."
Cheng Yuhang: "I saw your deskmate on the school bus this morning. Her house should be on Fuxing Road, the last stop. I saw her standing alone, and I wanted to show off by giving her my seat like you did, but in the end I didn't get the chance."
Wen Shuo didn't react, even a little impatient. Cheng Yuhang wanted to say something, but then he shut up. Wen Shuo stood in the corridor, his arm resting on the railing outside, watching the younger students playing around during recess downstairs. Somehow, he suddenly remembered the day on the school bus when Ren Li bumped into him and looked bewildered.
The bell rang and Wen Shuo returned to the classroom. As soon as he sat down, he saw Ren Li walking in from the front door.
She deliberately took a long detour. Wen Shuo could see that after sitting down, she had been very quiet. She took out a textbook from a neatly stacked pile of books on the table, spread it out on the table, and then put the stack of books neatly in place.
She lowered her head, writing something on the paper stroke by stroke, her expression serious and focused. Wen Shuo's gaze fell back on her desk. The pencil case was a cute rainbow-colored unicorn, and the pen shell was also pink, with sparkling little stars hanging on it...
Wen Shuo felt himself absent-minded again. He came to his senses, reached out, and knocked on Ren Li's desk.
Ren Li looked up, confused.
Wen Shuo: "What's the next class?"
Ren Li:?
She thought, "I've been in class for several days, is there anyone who doesn't know the new semester's schedule?" She didn't want to talk much, so she pointed to the podium in front of her.
At the front of the classroom, the biology teacher has walked in. This class is obviously a biology class.
Wen Shuo continued to ask: "Did you have homework yesterday?"
Ren Li shook her head.
She really didn't say a word today, and Wen Shuo's damn desire to win suddenly arose. He reached out and took the book on Ren Li's desk.
Biology textbook for the first year of high school.
He handed the book back to Ren Li without saying a word.
Ren Li was puzzled and even thought that Wen Shuo was deliberately looking for trouble, so she moved slightly to the side and kept a clear distance from her deskmate - obviously she didn't want him to disturb her again.
The two of them were preoccupied with their own thoughts and remained silent throughout the entire class. During lunch, Zhang Xintong had invited Zhou Qi to eat together, but since Wen Shuo was there, Zhou Qi naturally refused to go with Zhang Xintong.
Zhou Qi and Wen Shuo left, and Zhang Xintong took Ren Li to buy food at the convenience store. During this time, Zhang Xintong accidentally talked to Ren Li about how Teacher He praised her that morning, and gave Ren Li a thumbs up.
Zhang Xintong: "Lili, you were a very good student in the Affiliated High School. Teacher He doesn't usually praise others easily, but today he praised you to the skies."
Ren Li is always very modest: "No, maybe it's because I just arrived and Teacher He wants to encourage me."
Zhang Xintong tutted her words, not quite agreeing with her point of view. Ren Li seemed to have thought of something: "Then Teacher He, will you also praise other students? For example, Wen Shuo?"
She always vaguely felt that Wen Shuo seemed to have some privileges in Class 17, so it was reasonable for Teacher He to praise him.
Zhang Xintong: “Yes, but very rarely.”
Now Ren Li couldn't understand it.
Speaking of Wen Shuo, Ren Li recalled the way he took the biology book from her hands with a cold face that morning. The discomfort in her heart rose again, and she couldn't help but ask, "Don't you think Wen Shuo is a little difficult to get along with?"
Zhang Xintong: "I think it's okay. Brother Shuo is quite loyal. Otherwise, why would Zhou Qi always play with him?"
Ren Li uttered an "oh," and thinking back to his behavior this morning, she felt that Wen Shuo was sometimes quite strange. In short, he was cold and arrogant.
Seeing Ren Li asking about Wen Shuo, Zhang Xintong couldn't help but kindly remind her, "It's better for you to stay away from Wen Shuo. He's obviously not on the same page as you. You can't hold him back, and it seems like he has someone else he likes."
Ren Li hadn't thought about that at all, except for the unexpected gossip she'd overheard. Seeing her surprise, Zhang Xintong continued, "Zhou Qi said that day that his sister was pursuing Wen Shuo. Didn't he skip evening study with Wen Shuo the other day to celebrate Zhao Manyue's birthday?"
Speaking of birthdays, Ren Li seemed to recall this incident, but her focus was a bit off: "Zhao Manyue is Zhou Qi's sister? But why do they have different last names?"
"Because..." Zhang Xintong didn't really want to gossip about Zhou Qi behind his back, so she simply explained to Ren Li, "His parents are divorced. Zhou Qi followed his father, and Zhao Manyue was awarded to Zhou Qi's mother, and then changed her last name. His sister is currently in No. 18 Middle School, probably a sophomore in high school."
Ren Li: “I see.”
But that was Wen Shuo and Zhou Qi's private matter, and she didn't need to know. She was going to change seats next month, so she just listened to it and didn't think anything else about it.
Speaking of next month, Ren Li thought of the monthly exam.
Everyone avoided exams, and Ren Li was no exception. However, she seemed to be slightly looking forward to it this time. The monthly exams were meant to test her learning, and since she was new to No. 4 Middle School, she wanted to know where she stood.
Another afternoon passed in a hurry.
Wen Shuo didn't skip the evening study session today and went home early, which surprised Ren Li. Fortunately, during the second class, Wen Shuo disappeared again. Ren Li thought he had gone home early, but when she got on the school bus, she ran into Wen Shuo again.
The school bus was usually not very crowded at night, and there were still many empty seats at this time. Wen Shuo was leaning against the handrail in the middle of the car, chatting with a boy. Ren Li had some impression of this boy; she had seen him before. His name seemed to be Cheng Yuhang.
Ren Li was naturally socially anxious. She boarded the bus from the front door, and to get to the back row, she had to pass Wen Shuo in the middle of the car. So Ren Li didn't walk far and found a seat in the front.
She felt that she was not that familiar with Wen Shuo, so there was no need to say hello.
A few minutes later, the number of people on the bus gradually increased. Ren Li found headphones from her schoolbag and put them on. She listened to music and looked out the window, isolating herself from the surrounding noise.
On the other side, Cheng Yuhang pushed Wen Shuo after seeing Ren Li get on the car: "Isn't this Ren Li?"
Wen Shuo glanced at her and said nothing.
After a while, Cheng Yuhang asked again, "She should be a good student, right? After all, Lao He arranged for her to be your deskmate."
The words that Lao He said in class today to praise Ren Li were not in line with Lao He's usual style. Ren Li was a transfer student, and Lao He insisted on making her his deskmate. This could only be explained as special care for her.
Thinking of this, Wen Shuo replied: "My grades are just average."
Cheng Yuhang: "But I think she should be a girl who studies very well."
Wen Shuo: "If you have time to care about other people's studies, why don't you finish tonight's homework first?"
He and Cheng Yuhang had known each other since kindergarten, so he naturally knew what kind of person the other was.
Sure enough, Cheng Yuhang smiled awkwardly and said, "That's true." He stopped talking about studying and started chatting with Wen Shuo about this week's game.
More than ten minutes later, they arrived at Fuxing Street. The driver stopped the car in front of the intersection, opened the door, and Ren Li got out.
She walked a distance forward and stood at the intersection, waiting for the red light. Wen Shuo unconsciously glanced out the window. The girl with a ponytail was tugging at the straps of her schoolbag, her feet rising and falling in step with the red seconds and metered seconds until the green light came on. She raised her foot and stepped forward, her steps cheerful and light, crossing the road and soon disappeared from sight.
The school bus started up again. Cheng Yuhang was still chatting about who had the highest shooting percentage in this week's game. Wen Shuo turned his head back, lost in thought. After a moment, he lowered his head, pulled out his phone, and opened a map.
Fuxing Street is located in the city center, surrounded by large shopping malls and office buildings, and residential areas are not difficult to find.
Wen Shuo's gaze finally settled on a certain neighborhood on the map. He finally decided to put his phone away and continue chatting with Cheng Yuhang.
