Chapter 68 Zombies - Base

On the wide road, a motorcycle sped past like lightning, roaring forward. Two figures, one tall and one short, sat on it; upon closer inspection, they were none other than Xu Anran and Xiao Feng, who had just escaped from a horde of zombies!

After a long journey, they finally arrived near the island in the middle of the lake. However, looking around, they couldn't find any road or boat to cross the lake. Helpless, the two had no choice but to find an empty house nearby and decide to stay there to rest.

Fortunately, there were relatively few zombies in the surrounding area, presumably cleared out by the base.

After settling in briefly, Xu Anran quickly took out her phone to send a message to Xu Liang, telling him that she was safely out of danger. However, she received no reply. She then tried dialing his number, but again, there was no response, just like with Fan Yunfei.

Looking in the direction of the base in the distance, Xu Anran couldn't help but feel a deep sense of worry.

Meanwhile, inside the base, the scene was quite different. Everyone was racking their brains trying to figure out how to repair the damaged signal tower. Due to a shortage of some key materials, the base had to urgently mobilize manpower and planned to set sail the next day to find the necessary supplies.

In fact, neither the damage to this signal tower nor the previous broken bridge was an accidental event, but rather something deliberately done.

Beneath this seemingly peaceful base lurks a group of deranged lunatics. These people firmly believe that the terrible disaster unfolding before them is a severe punishment from heaven, and that they are destined to remain on this isolated island to silently endure suffering in order to atone for their sins.

Night fell, and all was quiet; the whole world was immersed in tranquility. Xiao Feng sat alone in the room, keeping watch for the first half of the night, while Xu Anran kept watch for the second half.

Xu Anran lay on her bed in the bedroom, thinking about Xu Liang, Fan Yunfei, and the base, and began to have a precognitive dream.

The dream gradually unfolded, and the scenes slowly emerged. Everything was normal at the base; people were busy completing their tasks before returning to their residences to rest.

The team that went out to find materials returned by boat, and everyone immediately began repairing the crucial signal tower. However, during the construction, an unexpected situation suddenly occurred—someone attempted to sabotage it! Fortunately, the highly vigilant guards quickly noticed the anomaly and apprehended the perpetrator.

They began investigating the matter and eventually successfully identified the group of fanatics who attempted to destroy the signal tower. They then imprisoned these individuals without mercy, awaiting their final trial—execution by firing squad.

Just when everyone thought the danger was over, little did they know that an even greater crisis was quietly approaching. It turned out that one of the team members who went out to search for materials had unfortunately been scratched on the arm by a ferocious zombie.

The team member didn't make a fuss. Instead, he quietly killed the zombie when no one was looking, then quickly bandaged his wound and returned to the base as if nothing had happened.

Shortly after the injured team member returned home, the terrifying symptoms of mutation began to appear. Because everyone at the base was busy dealing with the imprisoned lunatics and had no time for anything else, no one noticed what was happening.

And so, the virus spread rapidly like wildfire...

After arriving at the base, Xu Liang and Fan Yunfei were assigned to camp in tents on the west side of the island in the lake. The tents were right next to the shimmering lake, and a gentle breeze brought a touch of coolness. As usual, they went into their tents to rest for a while when suddenly, a commotion broke out and they ran out to check what was happening.

Outside, chaos reigned. The flickering firelight in the night illuminated panicked faces. Terrified screams echoed from the crowd, sending chills down one's spine.

Meanwhile, the hideous, zombie-like creatures raged wildly, lunging at humans and tearing them apart. Faced with this horrific scene, the soldiers fought desperately with all sorts of weapons, but the situation remained extremely chaotic.

Xu Liang and Fan Yunfei exchanged a knowing glance, as if reaching a tacit understanding. Without hesitation, they sprinted together towards the base where the ships were stored. But when they arrived, breathless, they were stunned by what they saw—the spot where the ships should have been moored was completely empty!

It turned out that those in high positions and wielding great power had already gotten wind of the situation and sailed away all available ships, leaving ordinary people like them, with no background, stranded on the island, helpless.

"Ring ring..." A sudden, urgent cell phone alarm rang out, breaking the tranquility of the night.

Xu Anran woke up with a start, groggily opened her eyes, glanced at her phone screen, which showed midnight. She left the room to relieve Xiaofeng.

Sitting alone on the cold chair, Xu Anran's thoughts gradually drifted back to her dream.

Unable to contact them now, if we could follow the ship that goes out to find supplies tomorrow to the base, and secretly eliminate the team member who has been infected by zombies, perhaps this plan would work? This way, we could not only find Xu Liang and the others, but also resolve the crisis at the base.

The next morning arrived in the blink of an eye. Xu Anran was already waiting by the lake, anticipating the arrival of the group. Finally, a commotion arose in the distance, and a boat slowly came into view. However, when she hopefully approached and asked to go to the base together, she was met with a cold rejection.

It turns out that due to the tight schedule of this mission and the limited space on the ship, it was simply impossible to accommodate more people.

They said they would return to pick them up after transporting the materials, and told Xu Anran and the others to wait patiently. But in reality, there was another reason behind it—the team leader of this mission happened to know Xu Anran.

He was in the rescue team at the time and witnessed Xu Anran personally kill Huang Mao and jump off the high bridge. From that moment on, he became suspicious of Xu Anran and always felt that this person was quite dangerous, so he decided not to bring him back to the base for the time being.

After being rejected, Xu Anran felt extremely helpless, but there was nothing she could do. She thought to herself, "Hmph! Since you're unwilling to take me with you, then that's a huge loss for you!"

However, despite some dissatisfaction, Xu Anran still kindly reminded those people that this operation was fraught with danger, and that they should be careful, take full protective measures, and not let their guard down, especially to avoid being infected by zombies.
