Chapter 288 "My lord, it is I, your concubine."

Wang Jinzhong seemed oblivious to this subtle change, still smiling obsequiously: "Yes, I'll go keep an eye on it right away."

Yu Ru nodded slightly, satisfied with Wang Jinzhong's reaction. She didn't say anything more and turned back to the inner room.

Wang Jinzhong had been smiling obsequiously until Yu Ru turned around, and he didn't stop smiling until he turned and left the main courtyard.

The smile on Wang Jinzhong's face vanished as soon as he stepped out of the main courtyard. He suddenly spat, seemingly at someone unknown.

His little apprentice was named Jinbao, but he had always been treated worse than the second-class maids in the main courtyard. He glanced around and was not surprised by his master's reaction.

"Master, what should we do now—"

Wang Jinzhong spat again: "Go keep an eye on things in the front yard. Your master has other things to do today."

Jinbao acknowledged and went to carry out the order.

In the front yard, Fourth Master had just gone to sleep when Li Chenjiao arrived.

Li Chenjiao originally didn't plan to stay, but she understood that this was a timely opportunity, which is why she came.

However, she had no intention of staying, as it was simply too conspicuous.

Although the Fujin is currently ill, Li Chenjiao is well aware that if she stays in the front courtyard, the Fujin will regard her as a thorn in her side.

Li Chenjiao didn't want to get herself into trouble.

She has always loved peace and quiet and would rather avoid trouble. As long as others don't bother her, Li Chenjiao doesn't want to cause any trouble.

However, Su Peisheng acted as if he had seen a savior as soon as he saw her, and kept begging her, saying that his master had asked her about her earlier, so Li Chenjiao stayed for a while.

However, Li Chenjiao was skeptical of Su Peisheng's claim that the Fourth Master had previously been thinking of her, since the Fourth Master didn't seem like the type to say such a thing.

But since she's already here, she has to let Fourth Master see that she really came, otherwise it wouldn't have been a wasted trip.

But she really had no intention of staying overnight in the front yard; the front yard was nowhere near as comfortable as her east yard.

The incense on her bed was unique, as were the persimmons and frozen pears. The adorable Aman was also unique, and even the palace lanterns made by the two maids under the eaves were different in Li Chenjiao's eyes.

She didn't want to stay, but the ailing Fourth Master seemed truly confused and directly ordered a servant to bring her clean clothes from the East Courtyard to the front yard.

Helpless, Li Chenjiao waited until Fourth Master fell asleep again before packing her clothes. The front courtyard room was large, but Li Chenjiao didn't take up too much space, since she didn't intend to stay in the front courtyard for long.

Then she instructed Qiu Hu to go back and give Chen Shi and Zhong Shi some more instructions. She was worried that A Man might cry and make a fuss because she was away from the East Courtyard for half a day.

Although Aman loves to cry and fuss, most of the time it's just empty howling, so Li Chenjiao isn't too worried.

After she finished tidying up, she watched as the servants in the front yard brewed medicine for the Fourth Master, and chatted with them as they did so.

She wasn't pretentious at all, and the maids in the front yard treated her with great respect, making for a pleasant afternoon.

After Li Chenjiao asked what was for dinner, the maid in the front yard answered first.

The kitchen in the front yard is separate from the kitchen in the back yard. It is solely responsible for the Fourth Prince's meals, and naturally everything is done according to the Fourth Prince's preferences.

They were all in very proper and conventional styles.

After the two maids announced the dishes, Li Chenjiao didn't offer any advice, only saying, "Now that the Fourth Master is ill, his meals must be light, which is quite a burden on the kitchen."

Of the dishes reported by the kitchen, Li Chenjiao didn't like many of them; just hearing the names of the dishes made her imagine how tasteless they would be.

However, this was the front kitchen, and Li Chenjiao wasn't stupid; she wouldn't say anything more.

I've been suffering for two days straight, feeling utterly miserable.

However, she didn't get to have dinner. Before the dinner was even served, Fulu rushed over and said, "I've finally found you, Consort. The mistress has woken up and is looking for you."

——

On Fourth Master's side, he rarely slept so soundly. When he opened his eyes again, the lights were already on in the room. He was not used to the dim light when he woke up.

Fourth Master felt a little dizzy. After a moment, he closed his eyes and called out, "Su Peisheng."

His voice was low and hoarse.

When Li Chenjiao came in, she heard Fourth Master's soft call. She was tiptoeing to light the lamp when she heard the sound, so she lowered the paper cover and went to Fourth Master's side.

"My lord, it is I, your concubine."

She spoke softly, and after she finished speaking, she raised her hand and touched the back of Fourth Master's hand.

"Are you hungry, Master? The kitchen has prepared some porridge. Please have some. It's already past midnight."

The Fourth Prince pursed his lips and remained silent for a moment. By the dim candlelight, he caught a glimpse of Li Chenjiao's features. After a moment, he seemed to sigh very softly.

"You've come." This was followed by a soft, not-so-clear "hmm," as if acknowledging Li Chenjiao's statement, or as if unwilling to say anything more.

Li Chenjiao paused for a moment, naturally realizing that the Fourth Master had probably been dazed when he asked her to stay earlier at noon. Look, he'd already forgotten that she was already in the front yard.

They even spent half a day in the front yard.

But there's no need to talk about those things right now. Listening to the Fourth Master's voice, she sighed softly after a while, then got up and went to the outer room to pour some warm tea.

"Sir, you're really neglecting your health. Have some tea to soothe your throat first."

As she spoke, her dark eyes welled up with tears, and her voice became somewhat hoarse.

Fourth Master raised his hand and pressed his forehead, his voice tinged with awkwardness: "You're making it sound like I've done something wrong."

He propped himself up, took the teacup from Li Chenjiao's hand, and slowly drank it all.

While Fourth Master was drinking tea, Li Chenjiao glanced around.

With no other servants in the room, Li Chenjiao felt much less apprehensive.

She then fetched a soft pillow from the outer room and placed it behind Fourth Master to make him more comfortable. Next, she found scissors beside the tallow tree candle in the inner room to add some light.

Fourth Master just watched without saying a word.

Fourth Master rarely gets sick, but his sudden illness really does have a sense of "illness strikes like a landslide."

When Li Chenjiao turned around, she saw that Fourth Master seemed to be tired again, with a brocade quilt embroidered with four-cornered pythons tucked around his side, as if he was about to rest.

"tired."

Since Fourth Master fell ill, he seems to have become quite childlike.

He did resemble the Fourth Master when he was drunk.

Li Chenjiao pondered for a moment, then took two more steps closer, leaned down slightly to the bedside, and pulled the quilt up: "Master, you've only been awake for a short while. Eunuch Su said you didn't eat much for lunch, and you haven't had dinner yet. Are you going to rest again?"

Fourth Master closed his eyes and pretended to sleep, remaining silent, as if he were throwing a tantrum.

This made Li Chenjiao laugh.

However, she dared not laugh out loud in front of the Fourth Master.

She slowly bent down again, her black hair falling down and lightly brushing against the back of the Fourth Master's hand, which had not yet been withdrawn.

"Is the medicine that Fulu just brewed not going to be used, sir?"
