When Li Chenjiao woke up in the east courtyard, it was already dark outside. She was awakened by hunger.
Upon hearing the commotion, the Fourth Prince outside put down his brush and entered the inner room: "Awake? How are you feeling? Have someone bring in the medicine. Drink the medicine prescribed by the imperial physician first."
Li Chenjiao felt a bit refreshed now, her face was no longer covered in sweat. Everything felt like a dream, but the cessation of her abdominal contractions reminded her that yesterday's events were not a dream.
She couldn't straighten up, and responded to the Fourth Master's words in a very soft voice: "I'll do whatever you say, Master."
She noticed the gloomy sky outside, lowered her eyes, and felt a pang in her heart, but with the Fourth Prince in front of her, she couldn't ask him.
Fourth Master quickly summoned a maid, Qiu Ci, who soon brought in the medicine. Qiu Hu stood to the side holding a jar of candied fruit. As Li Chenjiao drank the medicine, she whispered, "Ping Niang made these candied fruit a few days ago. Please use them to get rid of the bitterness in your mouth, Master."
After eating, Li Chenjiao's tightly furrowed brows gradually relaxed.
After taking the medicine, Li Chenjiao's complexion improved slightly, but her face was still deathly pale and she looked extremely haggard: "Has Master had dinner yet?"
Li Chenjiao didn't know if she looked ugly or not, but if the Fourth Master disliked her, she could only pretend she didn't see it.
Fortunately, she didn't see any obvious look of disgust from the Fourth Master.
Fourth Master waved his hand: "Find a small table and set it up in front of your master, then bring in dinner."
The two maids exchanged a glance, understood what was going on, and then left together.
Only Fourth Master and Li Chenjiao remained in the inner room.
The Fourth Prince gently stroked Li Chenjiao's wrist: "The Fujin and the others came by during the day, but fearing they would disturb your peace, I sent them all back. These days, you should focus on recuperating. The imperial physician said you've suffered a great loss of energy this time and need careful rest. I've already given instructions that no one is allowed to disturb you. This matter... it was my fault..."
Fourth Master was referring to the matter of the two midwives.
The midwives were sent to the East Courtyard by Su Peisheng at the Fourth Master's request for Li Chenjiao to choose from. However, such filthy things appeared right under Li Chenjiao's nose, almost costing her her life.
Li Chenjiao remained silent for a while, and then a bright smile appeared on her face, which contained a hint of sincerity: "I am already very content to be able to see you, Master."
She was a smart woman and wouldn't hysterically demand anything from Fourth Master at this time. She knew that the most important thing right now was to take care of her health, and she hadn't forgotten what needed to be settled.
When Fourth Master heard Li Chenjiao's words, his heart clenched.
He held Li Chenjiao's wrist, remaining silent for a long time.
Li Chenjiao smiled first: "I mean it from the bottom of my heart. I am already very content to be able to see you, my lord."
The Fourth Prince held her hand, looking into her eyes: "I will stand up for you."
A fleeting emotion crossed Li Chenjiao's eyes, but she simply nodded slightly and asked, "Has Master interrogated the two midwives?"
Fourth Master grunted in agreement: "I asked them a few questions at noon, but I didn't get any information. If you want to see them, I'll have them brought here after dinner."
Li Chenjiao agreed, but she wasn't entirely relieved. She looked up and asked, "Where's the child? Is the child alright? Second Princess hasn't seen me all day, did she cry?"
She did not forget the Second Princess just because she gave birth to the Fourth Prince.
The Fourth Prince hummed in agreement: "All is well. The Fourth Prince has already fallen asleep, just like the Second Princess did back then. The Second Princess didn't cry, but she said a few times that she wanted to see you. Let the nanny bring her over when you look better."
Li Chenjiao raised her hand and touched her face, whispering, "Am I ugly? Will it scare Aman?"
She actually knew that's not what the Fourth Master meant.
Fourth Master's gaze fell on her, seemingly as cold as before, yet also concealing something. He answered quickly, "Not ugly." His tone was unusually firm, making it clear to everyone that it wasn't a lie.
The Fourth Prince leaned slightly forward, raised his hand to brush aside a strand of hair from Li Chenjiao's eyebrow, and it seemed that Li Chenjiao's small reflection could be seen in the Fourth Prince's eyes.
Li Chenjiao was slightly taken aback by that extremely focused gaze.
"Your elegance remains unchanged." When Fourth Master said this, he seemed to be lost in memories, as if recalling the scene of his first meeting with Li Chenjiao. However, when he looked at Li Chenjiao, the scene of his first meeting with Li Chenjiao seemed to overlap with the scene of Li Chenjiao in front of him.
The phrase "unchanged elegance" came naturally and from the bottom of his heart.
After a moment, the Fourth Master withdrew his hand and took out a flower hairpin.
I don't know when Fourth Master prepared it.
It was a hairpin adorned with kingfisher feathers and a begonia flower design, with tiny beads on the petals and leaves, like morning dew, making it difficult to tell the difference at a glance.
A touch of pure white tinged her jade-like face. The Fourth Prince placed the flower hairpin on the silk handkerchief beside the soft pillow. His expression was focused, and his movements were slow: "This flower suits you."
Li Chenjiao blinked her eyelashes to hide her face, and after a long while, she said in a very low voice, "It's fake, it doesn't suit me at all."
This bit of coquettishness wouldn't be annoying. Fourth Master hummed in skepticism, "It really is still on its way. You'll be able to see it after you finish your confinement in the spring."
The green crabapple blossoms in March are still a while away from their peak blooming season...
Li Chenjiao originally wanted to say that Fourth Master hadn't put in the effort, but who knew that Fourth Master had actually prepared green crabapple blossoms. No wonder there was a hint of doubt in Fourth Master's eyes just now. He probably didn't expect that Li Chenjiao would know that he had prepared green crabapple blossoms on the way.
Actually, Li Chenjiao originally intended to cause trouble.
She closed her eyes briefly, but a smile slowly crept onto her lips: "I'm hungry."
Fourth Master tilted his head: "The dinner has been served for a while now..."
He turned his head and noticed several figures behind the screen, including that bastard Su Peisheng.
