Chapter 3 Reflecting on My Origins

She had firmly clung to the Empress Dowager's coattails.

Her own background was quite impressive; her father was the Empress Dowager and the Emperor's most beloved youngest son (brother), and her mother was the most favored princess of the Mongol tribe. (All of this is fictional; please do not take it too seriously.)

With the Empress Dowager's support and the property and shops left by her father and mother, her life wouldn't be too bad.

However, thinking of the two people who had long since left him, and even the images of the two people in his memory were beginning to blur, a sense of sadness welled up in Shen Nian's heart.

...

Before she could calm herself down and compose herself, a commotion pulled her back to reality, and she saw the orderly crowd suddenly descend into chaos.

The Empress Dowager frowned and silently pulled the two girls beside her closer.

Before she could figure out the reason, a series of hoofbeats sounded, accompanied by Fu Erkang's shouts.

An unreliable voice, "Protect the Emperor! Protect the Empress Dowager!" came from not far away.

Shen Nian knew it was time for Xiao Yanzi to make her appearance, and sure enough, she did.

"Auspicious purple clouds come from the east, quickly return to me auspicious purple clouds from the east!"

A sharp female voice reached everyone's ears, and Chen Nian turned his head to follow the sound.

Miraculously, through the crowd, I saw the person dressed in a pink cheongsam, holding her so-called "purple aura coming from the east," chasing after a horse.

At that moment, her ominous premonition reached its peak.

The sudden appearance of the horse, which charged straight towards them, threw the crowd into chaos, and everyone scattered.

Qing'er was nowhere to be seen either. She was blocked by people and couldn't see the direction clearly. She could only be pushed and shoved backward.

Fortunately, she hasn't separated from the Empress Dowager yet. By basking in her Empress Dowager's glow, she shouldn't be in too much of a miserable state.

As she silently prayed in her heart, feeling the person holding her tightly and even trying to protect her, a warm feeling washed over her.

The Empress Dowager truly doted on her.

The crowd kept pushing and shoving, making all sorts of noises, so no one knew who to listen to, and the scene became chaotic.

Among them was even the Emperor's mantle, "Protect the Empress Dowager."

As the horse drew closer, everyone panicked and fell backward, just as the horse's hooves were about to trample the Empress Dowager's face.

Although Shen Nian knew that the Empress Dowager would be fine, she was still afraid that something might happen. In the play, the Empress Dowager was greatly frightened because of the horse's hoof.

Chen Nian exerted his strength, switched places with the Empress Dowager, and tightly closed his eyes.

Waiting for the horse's hooves to arrive, she didn't know if her actions would change anything. She wasn't a daring person, but she couldn't bear to let the person who truly loved her suffer any harm.

Fortunately, Benjamin leaped onto his horse and held it firmly in place.

The crisis for Kema was resolved, but the people were gone. Because she had pulled the Empress Dowager away, Consort Yu let go of the Empress Dowager's hand, but held onto Kema's hand tightly.

In the urgency of the situation, Shen Nian loosened her grip on the Empress Dowager's hand, thinking that she could prevent as many people from falling as possible, while she herself was violently thrown backward by Consort Yu.

Yu Fei pulled so hard that Chen Nian was the first to slam into the ground, landing on the feet of the two people who were about to pry open. Chen Nian seemed to hear a creaking sound coming from her own back.

Before she could think, Consort Yu also fell, half of her body landing on top of her. *Thud*—Chen Nian thought she was doomed.

Just as Shen Nian was relieved that the Empress Dowager hadn't fallen, perhaps due to the plot, Shen Nian watched helplessly as the Empress Dowager also began to fall.

Just as the Empress Dowager's head was about to hit the ground, Shen Nian didn't have time to react. She quickly placed her hand, which wasn't being held down by Consort Yu, behind the Empress Dowager's head to prevent it from hitting the ground.

A sharp pain, like friction, shot through her instantly. Shen Nian knew her hand was definitely raw.

Just when Shen Nian thought she had suffered enough, pastries began to scatter everywhere, and she couldn't even dodge them.

With her left hand supporting the Empress Dowager's head and her right hand being pressed down by Consort Yu, she could only turn her head slightly, praying that she wouldn't suffer any worse. Her eyes were tightly closed, and her eyelashes were trembling incessantly.

Huh!

After waiting for a long time without any pastries being thrown at her face, Chen Nian opened her eyes and saw a hand with distinct joints, fair and slender, with pastries faintly visible on it.

"It's alright now."

A clear, gentle male voice entered Chen Nian's ears.

Ertai looked at the person with his eyes slightly open, wanting to look but not daring to, and felt a little amused.

"real?"

Chen Nian could hardly believe it; was it all over so quickly?

She was terrified. If another piece of pastry suddenly flew at her the moment she opened her eyes, she would be speechless.

She hadn't even been back in the palace for half a day when she felt she was already ruined.

Before Ertai could answer,

"Quickly, quickly help the Empress Dowager, Consort Yu, Niannian, and Ertai and Yongqi up."

The emperor's anxious voice reached the ears of the people lying down.

Ertai removed his hand, allowing Chen Nian to see the light of day again. He could clearly see that there were indeed two pieces of pastry in Ertai's hand, and they were still crumbling...

The Empress Dowager was the first to be helped up, followed by Consort Yu, and then...

Niannian, how are you?

Qing'er quickly knelt down next to Chen Nian, and her eyes instantly reddened as she looked at the person on the ground. Nian Nian was the most delicate.

He reached out, wanting to help the person up.

"Ouch, no, no, no, Qing'er, Qing'er, slow down, slow down."

The pain in his back and hands made Chen Nian gasp.

Feeling the pressure on his shoulder, Chen Nian's voice rang out urgently.

Half of her body was numb from being pressed down by Consort Yu. Her back slammed heavily onto the legs of the two people behind her, which also hurt. Not to mention, Consort Yu also struck her.

The feeling was indescribable.

"Recite, recite."

With Qing'er's help, Chen Nian slowly took back the hand that had been supporting the Empress Dowager's head, straightened up, and was able to free the two people who had been cushioning her back.

Chen Nian turned his head to look at the two people he had helped to prevent from falling to the ground. "Thank you."

His voice trembled slightly.

She feels pain all over her body now, and she has no interest in appreciating handsome men.

Goodness, looking around, everyone else is fine, only I am the worst off. Is this what they call the protagonist's halo?

Looking at her trembling hands, which were worn raw and blistered, Qing'er couldn't hold back her tears.

She wasn't a crybaby, but when she saw her delicate sister so badly injured, she couldn't hold back anymore.

Ertai, who had just stood up, looked at the person sitting on the ground whose whole hand was trembling and felt inexplicably uncomfortable.

"Quickly, quickly, call the imperial physician! Hurry, call the imperial physician!"

Seeing Chen Nian's injuries, the Emperor's anxious and angry voice echoed around him.

Clearly, the others also noticed Chen Nian's miserable state. The Empress Dowager was even more anxious, pushing aside the people helping her and walking towards Chen Nian.

Her precious darling, she's only been back in the palace for a short time and she's already injured. How is she going to explain this to Ce'er?

"Your Majesty—"
