Chapter 23 Compulsory Education

"Alright, tell me what you've come here for," Kangxi said coldly.

Mingxiu paused for a moment, then realized that she had important business to attend to today.

So he loosened Kangxi's sleeve.

"Oh, right, Your Majesty, I came to ask you to help me find some calligraphy practice books. I have some in my room, but they all seem too difficult to write in. I would like Your Majesty to find some that are easier to write in."

Kangxi was somewhat surprised. He remembered that the calligraphy practice books in Mingxiu's room were all chosen by him, and they were very simple.

"Sure, you can write a few characters first so I can see them, and then we can talk about choosing a calligraphy model for you."

Mingxiu nodded, picked up a brush, found a piece of paper, and began to write.

Kangxi looked at her awkward pen-holding posture, then at the characters she wrote, and twitched the corner of his mouth.

What words did you write?

Mingxiu blinked

"Your Majesty, can't you tell? This is my name."

Having learned the answer, Kangxi examined it carefully and indeed could discern some traces of the characters "Mingxiu" within it.

Now it was Kangxi's turn to be speechless. With her handwriting, it's no wonder he felt that the calligraphy model was not suitable for her.

To ask him to give her someone else's calligraphy would be an insult to that person.

He tapped Mingxiu's forehead:

"Your handwriting looks like a blob of paste from afar, and it still looks like a blob of paste up close. I think you'd better stop practicing by copying other people's handwriting, or I'm afraid you'll anger someone to death."

Mingxiu's eyes widened

"Your Majesty, it's not that serious. You only use calligraphy practice books because your handwriting is bad. If your handwriting were good, who would need calligraphy practice books?"

Kangxi had no choice.

"Yes, people use calligraphy practice books because their handwriting isn't good, but at least they should be able to understand what's written. Look at what you've written."

Mingxiu looked at her handwriting

It's not that exaggerated. You can clearly recognize it. It's just a little ugly. But in modern times, most people who haven't practiced calligraphy write pretty much the same. She's seen other people's work and can recognize it.

Could it be that Emperor Kangxi had vision problems? Or perhaps he's aging prematurely at such a young age?

"No way," she thought, glancing furtively at Miao Kangxi's eyes.

Seeing her furtive glances, Kangxi felt a headache coming on. He picked up a pen and wrote a few words, then gestured for Mingxiu to take a look.

Mingxiu glanced at it, her mouth slightly agape in surprise.

"My God, this calligraphy is so beautiful! It's even better than the calligraphy I see from famous calligraphers online!"

Looking at Kangxi's calligraphy and then at her own, Mingxiu looked at Kangxi with a hint of grievance.

Kangxi rubbed his forehead

"Alright, I'll find you a calligraphy model that suits your writing style. Haven't you ever practiced calligraphy at home?"

Mingxiu chuckled:

"I did write, but I don't like writing, so my handwriting has never been very good."

That's the truth. In my memory, Hesheli Mingxiu's handwriting was also hard to describe, but it was slightly better than hers, just a tiny bit.

Emperor Kangxi gave her a look that was hard to describe, and waved for her to go back first.

Seeing the unspoken emotion in Kangxi's eyes, Mingxiu choked.

"Your Majesty, please don't look down on me. Although my handwriting is not good, I am very good at math. I have always been the fastest and best at accounting at home."

Kangxi smiled as he looked at Mingxiu's stern and defiant attitude.

"Alright, you're good at arithmetic. Practicing your handwriting would be even better. Now go back, I have other things to attend to. I'll come see you tonight."

Seeing the disbelief in the Emperor's eyes, Mingxiu continued to prove herself;

"Really, Your Majesty? If you don't believe me, you can test this servant. This servant is exceptionally skilled."

Kangxi shook his head helplessly.

"Alright, then I'll test you."

He then wrote down a problem and handed it to Mingxiu.

Mingxiu solved the problem, but the emperor still didn't trust her. Such a simple arithmetic problem was not easy.

snort

She was determined to prove him wrong today; she refused to believe that her nine years of compulsory math education were inferior to his.

"Your Majesty, I have calculated it."

Kangxi had just picked up a memorial when Mingxiu interrupted him.

He raised an eyebrow, somewhat surprised.

"You figured it out so quickly?"

"Your Majesty, please take a look," he said, handing the paper to Emperor Kangxi.

Looking at the answer on the paper, Kangxi was somewhat surprised. The question was not difficult; anyone with a little knowledge of mathematics could solve it. However, she was the first person to solve it so quickly.

After thinking for a moment, Kangxi gave Mingxiu another question.

After taking a look at the question, Mingxiu was somewhat surprised; it really came to her so easily.

I really didn't expect that the wise saying, "Master math, physics, and chemistry, and you'll be able to go anywhere in the world without fear," would still be useful in ancient times. Our ancestors were right!

This question is actually quite simple.

There are 150 fewer pear trees than apricot trees in the orchard. The number of apricot trees is three times the number of pear trees. How many apricot trees and pear trees are there respectively?

Mingxiu chuckled and said, "Tremble, ancient people! It's time to show you the terrifying subject of mathematics."

Solving equations is so simple. Mingxiu held the pen, thought for a moment, and wrote down the correct answer on the paper.

"Your Majesty, this is the answer."

Emperor Kangxi took the paper in shock. It clearly stated that there were 225 apricot trees and 75 pear trees.

Kangxi was genuinely surprised this time:

"How did you calculate that? How did you calculate it so quickly?"

Mingxiu chuckled and began explaining Arabic numerals to Kangxi, "This is 1."

Then there's addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and the multiplication table.

The afternoon passed just like that. Mingxiu looked at how he had completely mastered the addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and the multiplication table in just one afternoon, and she wanted to cry but had no tears.

Is this the difference between a genius's mind and hers, an ordinary person's mind? She studied for a long time back then.
