By the time the group went up, Mingxiu was already panting heavily. She leaned against Kangxi, supporting her back, and looked at the scenery around her. Putting aside everything else, the scenery was really nice. These people had built houses here, but they hadn't changed the surrounding scenery much. It had a kind of wild and beautiful charm.
After resting for a while, Mingxiu recovered. Kangxi's guards had already surrounded the area, so Kangxi took Mingxiu for a walk around and stood on the mountain to look at the scenery below.
High atop this mountain, all one can see is mist and clouds.
There is a road below that connects Chu and Qin.
Fame may entice their hearts, or profit may ensnare their bodies.
Those who ride and those who carry, what is their purpose in coming and going?
I too am but a follower of this world, unable to escape its clamor.
Seven years have passed in three cycles; why laugh at others?
Mingxiu looked at the scenery below and recited a poem.
Kangxi's good mood dissipated considerably. He pointed a finger at Mingxiu's head and said, "I always tell you to study properly, but you refuse. You even recite poems that don't convey the same meaning. Do you know what this poem means?"
Mingxiu shook her head somewhat awkwardly. She just thought the poem was easy to recite, and she had read it recently, so she had a vague memory of it and knew how to memorize it.
Kangxi, stumped by her words, could only explain, "The poem means that on a high mountaintop, all that can be seen is swirling clouds and mist. Below, there is a road leading to Chu and Qin. Some are tempted by fame, others are bound by profit. Whether by carriage or on foot, why is there such a commotion? I am one of those people, unable to escape this noisy world. Having traveled back and forth many times over seven years, how can I mock others?"
“Listen to this, what does this poem have to do with your current situation? You still have the nerve to recite poetry here. It’s only because it’s just the two of us that no one is laughing at you.”
Mingxiu turned and left, somewhat embarrassed and angry.
