Chapter 11: Looking at Jewelry

After inspecting the factory with his sister, the two left.

“Little sister, let’s go to the Treasure Shop and see the new jewelry. You’re so clever; you can even draw such exquisite jewelry designs.” Wanyan Alugang said as he pulled his sister toward the Treasure Shop.

"Young Master, Miss, you've arrived. The jewelry is finished. Please come up to the third floor, and I'll bring it up for you to see."

The two of them were very familiar with their own shop, so they went straight to a private room on the third floor and waited for the shopkeeper to bring up the new jewelry for them to see.

The two waited while watching the busy figures of people on the street outside the window.

There were vendors hawking their wares, acrobats performing, and people hurrying by in a panic.

Wanwan couldn't help but think of a line from a song: "Look at the world, people rushing around in a panic, all for a few pieces of silver. Yet, it is these few pieces of silver that can relieve all the world's sorrows." Thinking this, she sang it out.

Upon hearing this, Wanyan Alugang exclaimed, "Little sister, you're amazing! You only glanced at it a few times and you came up with such philosophical words, and you even managed to compose lyrics."

“Speaking of which, little sister, given our family’s status, you are definitely destined to be the primary wife. These past few years you’ve been practicing dance and singing, isn’t that something only concubines do?”

Wanwan rolled her eyes at him. "Third Brother, I'll say it again. I practice dancing and singing just to please myself and to improve my physical fitness. Besides, who says dancing and singing have to be for others to see? Can't I improve my physique?"

"And another thing, how many times have I told you? Why are you still asking? I've already told you that you can grow taller if you exercise more. Look at your older brother, and then look at yourself, so short and ugly. I'm embarrassed to say that you and my older brother are brothers from the same mother."

After giving her sharp-tongued third brother a piece of her mind, Wanwan's mood immediately improved.

What they didn't know was that their entire conversation was overheard by Emperor Kangxi in the next private room.

In fact, the guests who can go up to the third floor of Zhenbaozhai are all rich and powerful. Although Wanwan's private room was reserved for the host family and not open to the public, the other private rooms on the third floor are open to the public.

(In feudal society, whether it was a house or a restaurant, there were certain rules regarding the number of floors; they could not be built too high.)

Bang, bang, bang! The sound of knocking on the door rang out.

"Young Master, Miss, the items have been brought up," the shopkeeper said as he pushed open the door and placed the plate of jewelry on the table.

Wanwan took the jewelry in her hand and examined it carefully. She said, "Shopkeeper, it's well made. However, you can only make one set of each piece, one set of each color. Remember, remember, you cannot make multiple identical sets."

The jewelry at Zhenbaozhai is mostly high-end. If you order it here or buy it on the third floor, you are unlikely to see the same piece of jewelry as someone else.

You can make a set of jewelry in different colors, but you will not make a second set of the same color and style. To prevent counterfeiting, the jewelry from Zhenbaozhai is also engraved with the character "珍" (zhen, meaning precious) in a hidden place.

Because there's no chance of someone wearing the same design as another, jewelry from Zhenbaozhai is very popular among the wealthy and powerful.

Wanwan: "Alright, shopkeeper, shall we deliver all these things to your residence?"

"Third Brother, let's go to Fengming Tower for a good meal before we go home."

As they walked out of the Treasure Pavilion, Emperor Kangxi followed them out.
