Lanqin sat in her bedchamber reading the letter that the Fourth Prince had just sent back from the battlefield. After reading it, Lanqin slammed the letter down on the table, sighing deeply.
"What's wrong, Your Highness?" Cui Niang had noticed Lanqin's unusual behavior earlier, and seeing her sighing and groaning after reading the letter, she hurriedly asked with concern.
“The current war situation is urgent, the border war is critical, and the Emperor is away fighting. How can I not worry about the Emperor and Hongli!” Lanqin glanced at the concerned Cui Niang beside her. Cui Niang had always been loyal to her. Lanqin paused slightly before continuing.
"Hongshi has been captured... and the letter also says that he betrayed the Qing Dynasty and joined foreigners in selling out his country for personal gain..."
As she spoke, Lanqin sighed again.
"Hey, see for yourself..." Lanqin said, handing the letter on the table to Cui Niang, then closed her eyes, put her hand to her forehead, and sighed to herself.
Unexpectedly, Hongshi would do such a thing… Lanqin’s mind vaguely recalled Hongshi’s smiling face. She never imagined that Hongshi would do such a thing…
"Even though the Second Prince has been deposed by the Emperor, he shouldn't have done this!" Cui Niang said angrily after reading the letter.
Lanqin looked up at Cui Niang, her eyes filled with resentment and even hatred towards the Second Prince. It's understandable; after all, everyone probably hates those who betray their country for personal gain.
Lanqin simply shook her head helplessly.
Just as Lanqin was filled with sorrow, Sasar pushed open the door and skipped towards Lanqin, hugging her neck and affectionately calling her "Grandmother."
Lanqin scooped up her granddaughter and placed her on her lap. Immediately, she suppressed her melancholy, a smile spreading across her face, and gently asked, "What's wrong, Sasser?"
When Lanqin asked Sasa'er that question, her previous cheerfulness vanished. Staring at the wooden floor, she said in a childish voice that she missed her mother and father. Her big eyes looked like they were about to burst into tears, which broke Lanqin's heart.
Sasar's words reminded Lanqin that Sasar had been staying with her for three or four months, and that Ushiha and Suhar had been back in Dayuan for three or four months. And during this time, not a single letter had been sent.
Their two children were placed in Changchun Palace and cared for by Lanqin. The children were still young. Especially Sasa'er, who would often come to Lanqin asking where her father and mother were. Lanqin felt particularly heartbroken every time this happened.
“Sasar misses her father and mother, doesn’t she?” Lanqin asked gently.
“Yes.” Sasser nodded.
“I dreamt yesterday that Father and Mother came back. Grandmother, please tell Sasar, are Father and Mother coming back soon?”
Sasar jumped down from Lanqin's arms and blinked her big eyes at her. Tears welled up in Sasar's eyes at the mention of her father and mother. But the little girl stubbornly held back her tears.
"Good Sasar, your father and mother will be back soon." Cui Niang walked over, stroked Sasar's head, and comforted her.
“Yes, that’s right, Sasa’er, be good, trust your grandmother, it’ll be soon, your father and mother will be back…” Lanqin comforted her from the side.
"Mm." Sasar nodded and let the maid lead her out to play.
Watching Sasar's departing figure, Lanqin looked up at the sky, silently praying that the Fourth Prince would return to the capital soon...
