As the woman's voice faded, Fifth Prince's wife turned around. The woman she was looking at wore a purple jacket and a black pleated skirt. Her face was deathly pale, with two tear streaks on her cheeks. When Fifth Prince's wife looked at her, she trembled and shook her head slightly, making a barely audible sound. But no matter what she was, no one in Fifth Prince's household ever cared, because she was just a lowly concubine. She was the Concubine Mei that the woman had just mentioned.
Fifth Princess Consort was still looking at her. As if she had finally realized something, Princess Mei knelt down with a thud, kowtowing repeatedly and crying out, "Please, Princess Consort, spare the princess!"
It was the Fifth Prince's concubine, Lady Jiang, who initially suggested that Qing'an go to rescue the Fifth Prince. Lady Jiang was extremely displeased with Mei Gege's hesitant manner, thinking: "Does this woman not want to save the Fifth Prince?" Being very straightforward, she wanted to get to the bottom of things from Mei Gege, but then she noticed the Fifth Prince's concubine giving her a meaningful look.
Why not ask? Lady Jiang barely managed to stand, exchanging glances with the Fifth Prince's wife.
Fifth Princess said, "You may all go back first. Princess Mei, please stay. I have something to say to you."
Jiang, angered by the way the Fifth Prince's wife treated her, stomped her foot and left, letting out a cold snort as she passed by Princess Mei. Princess Mei, like a frightened bird, lowered her head and stepped aside.
After everyone had left, Fifth Princess Consort slowly stood up. She silently approached Princess Mei and asked her to look up at her.
Megge did as she was told, her eyes darting away and her whole body trembling.
"Princess Mei, nowadays, the only one who can save Fifth Prince is probably Qing'an," Fifth Prince's wife said earnestly.
Princess Mei looked at the Fifth Prince's wife, tears welling up in her eyes, making them red. She looked in the direction of the palace, and the image of Qing'an, the child she had no chance with, surged in her heart.
Qing'an is the daughter of Fifth Prince and Princess Mei. She was chosen by Fourth Prince to enter the palace and was given the title of princess, groomed as a candidate for a political marriage. As a princess, she became Fourth Prince's adopted daughter and is currently being raised by Consort Xi. After the great victory in the Northwest, there was no longer a need for political marriages. Consort Xi, unwilling to see her adopted daughters' youth wasted in the Forbidden City, arranged marriages for them. Although the wedding date has not yet been set, the candidates have already been chosen.
Princess Mei choked up and said, "The princess was chosen to be raised in the palace, and she is not close to me. I can't bring myself to say this."
Fifth Prince's wife looked at her coldly: "Are you unable to bring yourself to say it, or are you afraid that Qing'an's marriage will be affected by Fifth Prince?"
Upon hearing this, Princess Mei trembled violently. She prostrated herself on the ground and kowtowed repeatedly to the Fifth Prince's wife. The Fifth Prince's wife stopped her, "Princess Mei, the Fifth Prince is Qing'an's biological father. Does she want to watch her own father die in the terrifying Dali Temple like this?!"
"Are you really willing to watch your husband die like this?"
Every word from the Fifth Prince Consort struck a chord with Princess Mei. She sobbed and said repeatedly, "It's not like that, it's not like that!" Now she only had two choices: one would make her lose her husband, and the other would make her daughter suffer. Why was God so cruel as to force her to make such a choice?
"Princess Mei, do you still remember how I treated you when you first entered the manor?" Fifth Princess asked.
Princess Mei was taken aback, then tidied her appearance and bowed deeply to the Fifth Prince's wife, her voice heavy with sorrow: "Fifth Prince is one of our household members, one of our most trusted men."
"Remember your words, and never forget them." Fifth Princess Consort turned her back to Princess Mei and closed her long, thick eyelashes.
