Chapter 39 The Empress Dowager Seeks Help from the Empress
"It seems she wants to protect Gerile; she's planning to ask the Empress to vouch for her," the Empress Dowager said sarcastically. "No matter how virtuous and generous a woman is, how can she tolerate her husband having another lover?"
She couldn't do it, and she believed the Empress couldn't either.
Su didn't speak, but listened with her head down.
"Hmph, let her do whatever she wants. If Consort Hui fails to do what I said in three days, then she can't be kept alive."
There are plenty of good princesses in Horqin, they don't need Gerile.
"Go and fetch Meng He, Gao Yunbao, and the others. I haven't seen them yet today."
On the other side.
The Empress arrived at the Empress Dowager's palace quickly and greeted her upon entering.
The Empress Dowager, being quick-witted, immediately ordered someone to help the Empress up, preventing her from curtsying.
"Alright, we're all family, no need for such formalities." The Empress Dowager was pleased that the Empress had come and that she was willing to show her respect.
"Thank you, Your Majesty." Fanghua obediently disregarded etiquette and sat down gracefully below the Empress Dowager. "May I ask what Your Majesty has summoned me for?"
The Empress Dowager didn't stand on ceremony with the Empress. After dismissing the people around her, she said directly, "Empress, I want to ask you to save Gerile."
His face was filled with sorrow. "I only beg to spare her life."
Upon hearing this, Fanghua feigned surprise and stood up. "Empress Dowager, has something happened to Consort Hui?" The Empress Dowager really dared to ask.
"With the Empress Dowager here, why would she need her daughter-in-law to save her?"
The Empress Dowager opened her mouth, but couldn't utter a single word for a long time.
A hint of sarcasm flashed in Fanghua's eyes. It seemed that even though this person wanted her help, he didn't intend to tell her the truth.
They really think they can be used like fools.
"Since Your Majesty has made a request, I will not refuse. But I wonder how Your Majesty wants me to help you?"
The Empress Dowager then realized that she had been exposed. "Alas, I was thinking that the Emperor trusts the Empress the most. It's not right for Consort Hui to keep living in Qianqing Palace. It's also breaking the rules. I was hoping that you could persuade the Emperor to let Consort Hui go back to her own palace."
Fake, real or fake.
It's a pity, I can't fool her.
It seems she knew that if things continued like this, the Empress Dowager would eventually have to take action.
What she didn't see was that no matter whether Gerile lived in the Qianqing Palace or the Jingren Palace, she was doomed.
Because Emperor Kangxi could not tolerate her.
Anyone with eyes can tell that such a talented woman was deliberately cultivated by someone.
The Emperor is currently in high spirits, and he dislikes those who plot against him the most.
The person who plotted against him was his most trusted and closest relative, which only fueled his anger.
No one can extinguish this fire unless the game is destroyed.
"Regarding this matter, it was indeed my fault for failing in my management. Your Majesty, there is no need for you to ask for help. When we return later, I will go and comfort the Emperor. I believe the Emperor cares for Consort Hui and will not make things difficult for her."
OK.
It had nothing to do with her in the first place, but now that the Empress Dowager has dragged her into it, Emperor Kangxi's anger will only intensify. Consort Hui is doomed.
It's better not to keep such a scheming woman around, given the powerful influence behind her.
If she succeeds, the entire harem will have to acknowledge her as their master.
She would never relinquish her authority as empress.
The Empress Dowager wanted to say more, but she couldn't get the words out. She was someone who relied on the Grand Empress Dowager for her livelihood, and when things really came down to it, she couldn't handle them as cleanly and perfectly as the Grand Empress Dowager.
"You've been very kind. I'm indebted to you for this. From now on, just tell me if you need anything. I'll do my best to help."
This promise is quite weighty, but unfortunately, it requires the Empress Dowager to have that kind of influence.
"Then the daughter-in-law thanks the Empress Dowager."
After leaving Cining Palace, Fanghua indeed went to see the Emperor, just as she had said.
When Kangxi learned that the Empress was coming, there was no surprise in his eyes; he looked as if he had been waiting for her to arrive.
"Let your mistress/mistress in."
In the front hall of the Qianqing Palace, it was probably only Empress Fanghua who had ever entered. Emperor Kangxi sat on a high seat with his back flat against the ground. When he saw Fanghua enter, he smiled and waved to her.
After Fanghua approached, he spoke up, "Fang'er, is there something you need to see me about at this hour?"
Fanghua had gotten used to him calling her Fang'er instead of Empress.
"Your Majesty is wise. I do indeed have something to ask of Your Majesty." Fanghua did not stand on ceremony with him and responded in accordance with his words.
Emperor Kangxi choked on his words, realizing that his Fang'er had gone astray.
"You're such a rascal."
When Fanghua came to Kangxi's side, Kangxi immediately pulled her into his arms.
He missed her terribly these days, but things weren't over yet, and he didn't want to ruin his plans. That's why he forced himself not to go to Kunning Palace.
"Your Majesty, stop joking, there are still people here."
Fanghua blushed deeply; this person was truly shameless.
Sensing his emotional stirrings, Fanghua didn't dare to make any big moves, fearing that he might impulsively consummate the relationship right there.
"It is only natural for me to embrace my own wife. Does anyone dare to say anything?" With that, he glared fiercely at Wei Zhong and the others who had no sense of propriety.
What else could they do? These servants dared not displease their master, so they immediately apologized and withdrew.
They quickly gave the main hall to the couple.
Just as Kangxi was about to take things further, Fanghua stopped him. "Your Majesty, I have important business to discuss with you." She pushed him away forcefully, but he still managed to steal her kiss, and for a moment she was breathless.
He released her after a while, probably because her words had displeased him.
"Fang'er is so heartless." Kangxi hugged her tightly. "Fang'er, do you want to stand against Xuan Ye?" He then asked in a very soft voice.
Fanghua patted his shoulder gently, just as she used to when he sought comfort from her. "What nonsense are you talking about? How could I possibly stand against Your Majesty? I will stand with Your Majesty for the rest of my life."
This wasn't the first time she had said these words, nor was it the first time Kangxi had heard them, but each time he heard them, they reassured him greatly.
"Yes, I trust Fang'er."
Fanghua knew that this person probably knew what had happened in the harem today, otherwise he wouldn't be so resistant to her arrival.
She stopped beating around the bush and directly stated her purpose, even recounting her conversation with the Empress Dowager to put his mind at ease.
"If it weren't for you, I certainly wouldn't have been able to do what they wanted. But now that you've stepped in, I'll naturally give you face. On the day of your greetings, let Consort Hui move to Jingren Palace."
Anyway, he had already prepared a backup plan.
"Your Majesty, have I caused you any trouble?" Fanghua stepped out of his embrace and looked directly into his eyes.
Kangxi kissed her red lips. "No. It's not difficult."
Fanghua kept staring into his eyes, and knew that what he said was true. Her eyes were filled with even more affection. "That's good. If it would put Your Majesty in a difficult position, I would rather break my promise to the Empress Dowager than put Your Majesty in a difficult position."
Emperor Kangxi liked the way the Empress always put him first and followed his wishes, which made him feel that Fang'er belonged to him alone.
