Kangxi had already made up his mind, but this matter still needed to be investigated. Once the matter was investigated, it would be the day of Wuya's death.
The play had to continue, so Kangxi told his cousin to lie back down, and then walked out of the room with a gloomy expression.
Imperial Physician Wang was still waiting in Chengqian Palace. The medicine he prescribed had already been prepared by a palace maid and brought in for Lady Tongjia to take.
When the Tongjia clan member had her accident, it happened to be the time when all the concubines came to pay their respects. When Emperor Kangxi arrived at the main hall, all the concubines, both high and low, were there.
Because their children were on good terms, Consort Wenxi, Consort Min, and Consort Yi were all quite worried about Tongjia's health, but the feelings of the other consorts were unknown.
Kangxi's gaze swept over the concubines, taking in their expressions and actions. He secretly shook his head at some of the concubines who couldn't hide their expressions, feeling a growing dislike for them.
As the highest-ranking Consort Wenxi present, Lady Niohuru spoke first, asking Emperor Kangxi a question.
"Your Majesty, what's wrong with Sister Tongjia? What did the imperial physician say after examining her pulse? Is she alright?"
Emperor Kangxi was very pleased with this. His expression softened slightly, and he explained to Empress Dowager Niohuru, "The Imperial Noble Consort has been poisoned. This must have been a deliberate act of sabotage. I have already ordered Liang Jiugong to investigate. Once the results are in, I want to see who is so audacious."
With his last sentence, Kangxi turned to look at all the concubines below, his tone stern, as if trying to discern something from their faces.
Apart from some timid concubines and those who felt guilty for doing bad things, the rest were just a little scared, but their hearts were at peace.
Because of the investigation, the concubines were all gathered in the main hall and not allowed to leave. Emperor Kangxi also sat at the head of the table, waiting for the results of the investigation.
Not long after, Liang Jiugong came up with several palace maids and eunuchs, saying that they found him acting suspiciously and that he was quite suspicious.
These palace maids and eunuchs were all low-ranking servants in Chengqian Palace. They usually did menial work and rarely saw the emperor's face. When they were brought up and saw that the hall was full of noble ladies, they were terrified.
Two of them were second-class palace maids in Chengqian Palace, and they were somewhat valued by the Tongjia clan. Among these people, the two of them were the calmest and most composed.
Faced with Liang Jiugong's questions, everyone else trembled with fear and could barely utter a few words, but the two of them explained their actions in a logical and reasonable manner.
Kangxi stared intently at the two palace maids, knowing full well that they were the ones who had almost harmed his cousin.
With a cold snort in his heart, Kangxi's face grew increasingly gloomy. He wanted to see what these two disloyal servants could say.
With just a glance, Liang Jiugong knew what to do. His questioning of the palace maids and eunuchs was equally reasonable and well-founded.
Several people were indeed innocent and were taken away after being cleared of suspicion.
The remaining few were spies planted in Chengqian Palace by other concubines. Although they were unrelated to this matter, Kangxi could not tolerate their existence and directly ordered Liang Jiugong to take them away and deal with them.
After asking around, only the two second-class palace maids remained. The two who had been arguing cleverly just now were now starting to feel guilty.
Both of them had their heads down, so they couldn't see each other, but what they had in common was a hint of panic in their eyes.
Kangxi watched their every move and gestured to Liang Jiugong to continue the interrogation. This matter had to be resolved today.
Seeing that the two still wouldn't admit it, Liang Jiugong pulled out his trump card: the evidence he had gathered, and the testimony of knowledgeable witnesses, all indicated that the two palace maids were involved in something.
With the evidence irrefutable, the two palace maids finally confessed. In order to lessen their punishment, they explained the whole story clearly and instructed that it was Wuya from Yonghe Palace who did it.
Finally, the matter was brought up with Lady Wuya. Kangxi pretended to be angry and ordered Liang Jiugong to summon Lady Wuya to court for testimony.
Before long, Lady Wuya arrived. She was just happy, thinking that Lady Tongjia was about to be dealt with, but unexpectedly, the next moment Kangxi sent someone to summon her over.
Her heart skipped a beat, and Wuya felt a little guilty, but she quickly reassured herself that her plan was very secretive and that she had even used the deepest mole she had planted.
Those two second-class palace maids were people who had worked hard for a long time to climb to that position, and now they were being used. On the surface, those two people had no connection with him, so no one would find out.
Thinking this way, when they arrived at Chengqian Palace, Lady Wuya pretended to be kind and asked Lady Tongjia a few questions, which made Kangxi shake his head, thinking it was all fake.
"Wuya, these two palace maids have accused you of ordering them to poison and murder the Imperial Noble Consort. Do you admit to this crime?"
Unexpectedly, these two betrayed her so quickly. Wuya's mind went blank for a moment, and she suddenly didn't know what to say to defend herself.
She took a moment to react before she spoke up and protested that she had been wronged.
"Hmph! Stubborn fool. Since you won't admit it, then let's see the evidence."
Liang Jiugong immediately produced some evidence obtained through Tao Xin's betrayal. This was irrefutable evidence that directly proved that Wuya had plotted against the Imperial Noble Consort Tongjia.
Upon seeing these things, Uya was dumbfounded. She couldn't help but glance at Granny Li, wondering if Granny Li had betrayed her, otherwise how would they know about this evidence?
But she was met with the same bewildered and shocked expression from Granny Li. Only then did Uya realize that she had misunderstood Granny Li, but she still couldn't understand who had betrayed her.
Although evidence has emerged, Uya will not admit defeat and confess so quickly.
