Chapter 10 Paying Back the Debt

Lin's father patted Lin Feng on the shoulder and said with satisfaction, "You two siblings are both outstanding."

Lin Yun shook her head: "Dad, Mom, if we work together as a family, things will get better and better."

She walked over to the loom and asked, "Is this machine still usable?"

Mr. Lin sighed: "It's been a long time, and some parts have become loose. We need to find a carpenter to fix them."

Lin Feng volunteered: "I'll go find Zhang the carpenter. He's skilled and his prices are fair."

Lin Yun nodded: "Okay, brother, go and come back quickly."

After Lin Feng hurriedly left, Lin Yun and her parents continued to tidy up the shop.

Lin Yun sorted and put away the newly bought fabrics, then took out several new clothing designs she had drawn and handed them to her father: "Dad, take a look at these designs. Let's start with the simple ones."

Lin's father took the pattern and examined it carefully. The more he looked, the more surprised he became: "Yun'er, I have never seen these styles before. The buttons on the front, the waist cinching, and the cut of the hem... they are truly ingenious!"

Lin's mother also came over to take a look and couldn't help but exclaim, "If this were made, the style would definitely be even more beautiful than the clothes from Jinxiufang!"

Lin Yun smiled and said, "Mother, let's make a few samples first and see how the reaction is."

Just then, Lin Feng returned with Zhang the carpenter.

Carpenter Zhang is an old man in his fifties. He works at another shop not far from ours and has been a neighbor for a long time. His carpentry skills have always been excellent.

After inspecting the loom, he said, "This machine is quite old, but it can still be repaired. Give me half a day, and I guarantee it will be as good as new."

Mr. Lin thanked him repeatedly, saying, "Then I'll have to trouble you, Master Zhang."

Carpenter Zhang waved his hand: "No need for formalities between neighbors." After saying that, he began to repair the car.

While Zhang the carpenter was repairing the loom, Lin Yun and her mother began cutting fabric, preparing to make their first sample. Lin Yun chose a piece of indigo cotton cloth, intending to make a modified version of the ruqun (a type of traditional Chinese dress).

With practiced skill, she moved the scissors across the fabric and quickly cut out pieces of clothing.

Lin's mother watched in astonishment: "Yun'er, when did you learn this skill?"

Lin Yun's hands kept moving as she casually replied, "If you watch Mother do it often, you'll naturally learn."

Lin's mother agreed, as she hadn't kept her daughter in the dark when she made clothes at home. Seeing how capable her daughter was, she felt mostly gratified.

By noon, the loom had been repaired. Carpenter Zhang tested it and nodded in satisfaction: "It's working perfectly, even better than the new one!"

Lin's father gratefully paid the wages and then insisted on giving Zhang the carpenter a bag of snacks: "Master Zhang, thank you for your hard work. Please accept this as a token of my appreciation."

Unable to refuse, Zhang the carpenter had no choice but to accept it with a smile: "Brother Lin, if you need anything in the future, just let me know."

After seeing the carpenter off, the family sat down together for lunch.

The food was simple, but the atmosphere was exceptionally warm.

Lin Feng took a bite of his steamed bun and mumbled, "Yun'er, I'm going to the academy to see my third brother this afternoon, and I'll bring him some food."

Lin Yun nodded: "Okay, take the paper I bought for him with you."

After dinner, Lin Feng went to the academy, while Lin Yun and her mother continued making clothes, and Lin's father tried to weave cloth using the repaired loom.

The loom made a creaking sound, as if telling the story of this family's new beginning.

By evening, Lin Yun had completed her first piece.

It was an indigo-colored ruqun (a type of traditional Chinese dress), with simple intertwined floral patterns embroidered on the collar, cinched at the waist with a matching sash, and the hem flared slightly, both dignified and lively. Lin's mother held the dress, admiring it: "This dress is so beautiful, Yun'er, try it on."

Lin Yun changed into a ruqun (a type of traditional Chinese dress) and twirled in front of the bronze mirror.

The girl in the mirror had exquisite features, and her white dress made her skin look even whiter than snow. She looked as if she had stepped out of a painting.

Mr. and Mrs. Lin were stunned. Mrs. Lin's eyes reddened slightly: "My Yun'er is so beautiful. If she wore this dress out, all the girls would be so envious."

Lin Yun smiled and said, "Mom, this dress isn't for me to wear; it's a sample. We'll hang it up in the store tomorrow."

Mr. Lin nodded repeatedly: "Yes, yes, such nice clothes will definitely be bought by someone."
