Chapter 103 No Regrets

Because of the delay in receiving the news, Liu Shaoyi only learned about it about half a month after Tong Cheng'er was betrothed.

He felt quite conflicted after learning about this, as he is now a father and his child is already a few months old.

He felt a mix of emotions, but also a sense of relief. He thought that if this was the case, it wouldn't be a regret. Even if he had never married his cousin, the two of them were destined to have no future together anyway.

He kept telling himself that he had no regrets, but he still locked himself in his study for a whole day.

After finishing her chores in the inner quarters and playing with the children, Yu Sirou handed the children over to the wet nurse and then had dinner prepared.

Dinner was ready, but the person who usually showed up didn't come today.

Yu Sirou smiled and instructed, "Cousin is probably too engrossed in reading today. He needs to eat no matter what. Afu, go to the study and urge him to eat."

Adu: "Yes, madam."

After a while, Afu returned with a long face and said, "Madam, the young master said he is not hungry today."

Yu Sirou frowned: "Aren't you hungry?"

This is the first time I've ever gone half a day without eating and not felt hungry.

Yu Sirou thought for a moment and then instructed, "Go and ask the gatekeeper if anyone has come today."

"Yes, madam."

Afu was quick and returned in no time, saying, "Third Master Tong is here today."

Master Tong?

Yu Sirou pressed on, "Do you know why he came?"

Afu: "The gatekeeper said it was the young master who invited him."

Was it my cousin who invited me?

"Go and find out what Third Master Tong said today."

Upon hearing this, Afu went out to inquire.

Perhaps it was a woman's intuition, but Yu Sirou had a bad feeling.

Afu was gone for a long time before returning. When he came back, Yu Sirou immediately asked, "Did you find out?"

Afu spoke up: "Madam, the reason why the young master invited Master Tong over today is because he recently acquired a piece of calligraphy and painting and invited Master Tong to appreciate it."

Yu Sirou asked in confusion, "Is that all? That shouldn't be the case!"

Afu scratched his head: "That should be it, but Xu Cheng also told me something else, that Princess Tong was betrothed to the Fourth Prince."

Yu Sirou was taken aback by what she heard, and then fell silent. After regaining her senses, she waved her hand at Afu and said, "You can go out now. You don't need to ask any more questions."

Afu left.

Yu Sirou stayed alone in the room, her mind filled with many thoughts.

After an unknown amount of time, a voice came from outside the door: "Madam, the young master just sent someone to say that he is staying in the study tonight."

Upon hearing this, Yu Sirou's face turned pale, and she managed to say with all her might, "I understand."

The room fell silent again, but Yu Sirou couldn't calm down. So, even after all she had done, she still couldn't compare to Tong Cheng'er's position in his heart?

But if it weren't for the accident, she and her cousin would have been engaged.

Liu Shaoyi spent the entire night in his study without sleeping, and Yu Sirou spent the same night in her bedroom without sleeping either.

As dawn broke, Liu Shaoyi closed his eyes, while Yu Sirou applied her makeup carefully, pretending not to know anything, and began a new day.

In the evening, the two of them had dinner together.

Yu Sirou smiled and said with concern, "I know studying is important, but cousin, you should also take care of your health. Don't stay up late studying."

Liu Shaoyi said calmly, "Thank you for your concern, cousin. It won't happen again."

Yu Sirou was lost in thought, then murmured, "It's good that it doesn't happen, it's good that it doesn't happen."

Liu Shaoyi didn't hear what she said clearly and asked, "What did you just say?"

Yu Sirou smiled and shook her head: "I didn't say anything. Cousin, have some more soup! It won't taste good if it gets cold."

Liu Shaoyi nodded and said, "Okay."

After saying that, he took two sips of soup. When Yu Sirou saw this, she couldn't help but smile bitterly to herself.

I used to hear people say that the closest relatives and the most distant are husband and wife.

They should be the closest of people, and to outsiders they seem to be a perfect match, but why does she always feel there's a barrier between them?

They were both very close and very distant, but she only felt alienation and could never truly connect with them.

It wasn't that she didn't want to get closer, but whenever she took a step forward, her cousin would unconsciously take two steps back, as if the more she moved forward, the further away she would push him.

And so the two ended up in their current situation.

Such an estranged couple!

After finishing his meal, Liu Shaoyi went to his study as usual, but that afternoon, he couldn't concentrate on his reading at all.

Tong Cheng'er's image flashed through his mind again, but there was nothing he could do; he could only watch helplessly as she was about to marry someone else.

He had experienced this feeling of helplessness and resignation when he was drunk and lying in bed with his cousin; it was extremely distressing.

Liu Shaoyi couldn't help but ask himself, had he done something wrong?

But after thinking it over, he seemed to have no other choice. He couldn't ignore his cousin, and he couldn't stand by and watch her suffer. So this was probably just a matter of fate.

...

Liang Jiugong served a cup of tea to Kangxi, then said with a smile, "Your Majesty, I just heard that the Fourth Prince went to the Tong residence today, stayed there for quite a while, and then came out in high spirits."

Kangxi glanced at Liang Jiugong and realized he truly understood what Liang was thinking!

"Once we arrived at the Tong residence, the child couldn't wait to leave."

Liang Jiugong: "The Fourth Prince is at the age where he is young and loves women, and he probably wants to see his future wife."

Kangxi shook his head with a smile: "It's not like I haven't seen it before." He even held it! How pathetic.

After saying that, Kangxi asked again, "Do you think I set the wedding date for Yinzhen too late?"

Upon hearing this, Liang Jiugong was quite surprised. Is it too late? How eager His Majesty is for the Fourth Prince to get married that he has only given her half a year to prepare for the wedding? This is the most rushed wedding ever given to a prince's wife.
