Chapter Eight: Unconscious

Su Peisheng: "I troubled the imperial physician last night."

"It's all part of our job, nothing to do with it."

After seeing the imperial physician off, Su Peisheng sent someone to the Imperial Study to ask his master for leave. Given his master's current condition, he probably wouldn't be able to go to the Imperial Study today.

When the Imperial Study received the news, they were not surprised. After all, princes and noblemen were pampered and there were quite a few of them. It was during the change of seasons, so it was not unusual for one of them to fall ill from time to time.

Su Peisheng originally thought that his master would wake up after sleeping enough, but by noon, his master still hadn't woken up.

He felt this couldn't go on. After all, his master also needed to eat. He hadn't eaten well last night and had been sleeping until now. If he didn't wake up soon, he would starve.

Su Peisheng said, "Master, please wake up first, eat something before you go back to sleep."

Su Peisheng called out to Yinzhen as hard as he could, but Yinzhen remained lying in bed, refusing to wake up.

What was Yinzhen doing at this moment?

He was dreaming. In his dream, he saw another version of himself. After recovering from his illness, he was refused care by Consort De, but then, with the Crown Prince's intervention, he was personally raised by his father, the Emperor, for half a year.

He was grateful for the Crown Prince's kindness to him, so he always supported the Crown Prince. However, after he came of age and entered the court, he found that although the Crown Prince was not bad, his followers were somewhat muddle-headed. He tried to dissuade the Crown Prince several times, hoping that the Crown Prince could restrain his followers, but the Crown Prince would not listen.

In the end, he could only follow behind the crown prince, cleaning up his messes and taking the blame for him.

He accepted the favor once or twice out of gratitude, but after a while, even the greatest gratitude was worn away. In his dream, he and the crown prince had different ideals, and the two began to drift apart.

Later, the crown prince seemed to realize that he was in a bad situation, but by then it was too late. Even though he was the crown prince, the crown prince's faction was no longer something he could control.

There are too many vested interests involved; it's not something he can just cut off.

Then he watched as the crown prince was deposed, then reinstated, then deposed again, and eventually the crown prince's heart died.

With the Crown Prince's hopes completely dashed, it seemed that the remaining princes and nobles all started from the same point, and the version of himself in the dream began to plot.

He watched himself in his dream begin to plot, making use of all available resources. During this time, he lost a lot, and the struggle itself was not pleasant. However, once he embarked on the path of vying for the throne, there was no turning back. He could only continue forward, or he would face utter ruin.

He succeeded in the end, but the empire left by his father, the Emperor, was outwardly prosperous but inwardly already showing signs of decay.

He could not stand idly by and watch the Qing Dynasty perish, so he could only work diligently and spare no effort to repair the Qing Dynasty's empire.

In his later years, the struggle for succession led to widespread corruption among officials. To protect his empire, he had no choice but to carry out a brutal crackdown on corrupt officials.

With the national treasury empty, he began confiscating the homes of corrupt officials in order to replenish it.

While repairing the Qing Dynasty, he also had to guard against the scheming of his own brothers. In the end, he sent all his brothers to prison, intending to make them reflect on their actions. However, in order not to leave him with a good reputation, they committed suicide.

Then rumors began to circulate that he had killed his brother and father, and that his ascension to the throne was shrouded in mystery.

The Yongzheng Emperor in the dream had already drawn criticism from scholars for his ruthless actions in confiscating property, and this incident further damaged his reputation among them.

The rumors eventually spread, making it seem as if his ascension to the throne was truly illegitimate. In reality, his father, the Emperor, knew that the Qing Dynasty needed an emperor who could bear the infamy.

His ascension to the throne was legitimate, and he even did his utmost in matters concerning the crown prince.

Yinzhen watched as Yongzheng in his dream bore those unfounded accusations and began to work diligently to govern the country, eventually dying from exhaustion at his desk in the imperial study.

It can be said that the Yongzheng Emperor in the dream reigned for thirteen years, and he had a clear conscience and was worthy of the legacy left by his ancestors.

However, in Yinzhen's view, Yongzheng's life was truly tragic.

Although he lived a life of luxury, in reality, when he was still the crown prince, he was just a scapegoat for the crown prince; when he was no longer the crown prince, he was just a sharp blade in his father's hands, used to clear obstacles for the Qing Dynasty.

As for other things, he was somewhat aloof and longed for warmth, yet he avoided it at all costs. He never opened his heart to anyone in his harem, and the women in his harem mostly fawned over him.

To them, he was more of a person who could bring them favor and honor.

His son was mostly afraid of him.

Looking back on Yongzheng's life, it is true that he had a clear conscience, but it is also true that he was lonely.

Yinzhen couldn't believe this was his life. If it was, he would rather be a carefree prince than live a miserable life and die a grueling death.

...

Yinzhen's dream was very long. Su Peisheng noticed that it was already evening and his master still hadn't woken up. No matter how he called him, he couldn't wake up, which made Su Peisheng worried.

He immediately sent someone to fetch the imperial physician.

When the imperial physician heard that the Fourth Prince was not waking up, he also felt that something was wrong. Although people with fever may feel drowsy, they would not be unable to wake up! Especially since the Fourth Prince had taken the medicine and his fever had subsided.

The imperial physician rushed to the Fourth Prince's residence and took Yinzhen's pulse again. Judging from the pulse, there was actually no problem, so why couldn't he wake up?

The news of Yinzhen's coma eventually reached Kangxi's ears. Kangxi still cared about his sons; otherwise, he wouldn't have bothered to inquire about their studies even when he was busy with state affairs.

Moreover, Kangxi paid more attention to his sons who had survived in their early years, as they were all those who had survived with great difficulty.
