Chapter Nine: Awakening from a Dream

When Kangxi looked at Yinzhen, his fatherly heart was stirred, and he stayed by his side all night.

But no matter how loving a father he was, Kangxi couldn't stay by his side forever. The next day, just before the morning court session, he instructed the imperial physicians and servants to take good care of him before he left.

The imperial physicians were also worried. The Fourth Prince was in a coma for no apparent reason, which made them very anxious.

"Imperial Physician Wang, you've been in the Imperial Hospital the longest. How do you think we should report the Fourth Prince's illness to His Majesty?"

In any case, His Majesty must be given an explanation. It's uncertain when the Fourth Prince will wake up, but the prerequisite is to put His Majesty's mind at ease, otherwise they will all be in deep trouble.

After a while, Physician Wang spoke up: "The Fourth Prince's illness came on suddenly, it should be a mental illness. Let's give him some calming medicine for a while. The Fourth Prince had hysteria all night yesterday, so just tell His Majesty directly."

In the final diagnosis made by Imperial Physician Wang, Yinzhen's illness became a mental illness. As for when he would wake up, that depended on the Fourth Prince's own will.

Thus, Yinzhen remained unconscious for three whole days, which was enough for Kangxi to learn what kind of life his fourth son had been living after his cousin's death.

As a prince, he was naturally well taken care of in terms of food, clothing, and daily necessities. However, he couldn't eat, and he didn't seem to sleep well. In addition, Consort De's behavior was as if she had never given birth to Yinzhen, her son.

According to what Kangxi found out, during the Empress's mourning period, even though the concubines from other palaces were concerned about appearances, they still offered their condolences or sent gifts to the Fourth Prince. However, Consort De, his own mother, did not inquire about it at all.

This made Kangxi feel as if the scene of his son crying and begging him to let him see his son more often was an illusion.

Why is it that the Consort De he found out is the same Consort De he saw, and they are two different people?

Emperor Kangxi felt quite uneasy.

For Emperor Kangxi, the women in the harem were there to relieve his stress and to carry on his family line. Consort De was gentle and of humble origin, so he felt no guilt in favoring her. Moreover, she served him well in bed, so he gave her honor and favor. However, no matter how much honor and favor she received, she should not be allowed to neglect his son like this.

Although Emperor Kangxi considered that Consort De had performed well over the years and had given birth to many children, he couldn't punish her, but he was still displeased.

Emperor Kangxi began to suspect Consort De's motives from back then.

Yinzhen was in a coma for three days. He watched the scenes in his dream, and the images flashed repeatedly in his mind. He experienced almost three lifetimes of Yongzheng. Each time, Yinzhen was able to empathize with Yongzheng's helplessness, sorrow, and boundless loneliness.

After being unconscious for three days, Yinzhen slowly opened his eyes and said in a hoarse and weak voice, "Su Peisheng, water."

Su Peisheng thought he was hallucinating, but then he saw his master struggling to sit up. He quickly went over to help him up, and only after helping his master sit up did he get up to fetch the water.

Yinzhen drank a few sips of water and felt much better in his throat. Then he asked, "How long did Your Majesty sleep?"

"Your Majesty, you have been asleep for three days."

Yinzhen murmured, "Three days!"

But in his dream, he experienced the life of Emperor Yongzheng three times in a row, and he still can't get over that deep-seated loneliness and exhaustion.

"Your Majesty, His Majesty has instructed that you report to the Qianqing Palace immediately upon waking up."

"Send someone to deliver the message!"

"Yes, Master."

During the three days that Yinzhen was in a coma, many alarming rumors circulated in the harem. After all, it was quite strange that a perfectly healthy person would suddenly fall into a coma and that the entire Imperial Hospital was at a loss.

In addition, since the mourning period for Empress Tong had only recently ended, it was inevitable that some rumors would arise. When Kangxi heard about them, he took swift and decisive measures to suppress them, which finally quelled the rumors.

His son would not tolerate any dissent from his servants.

When Liang Jiugong saw the little eunuch approaching with a happy expression, he recognized him as a little eunuch from the Fourth Prince's residence, as he had visited the Fourth Prince's residence quite often these past few days thanks to the Fourth Prince's "blessing." From a distance, he sensed that he would be able to hear good news this time.

During the days that the Fourth Prince was unconscious, His Majesty was really difficult to serve. Several people who served him had already been punished with beatings. He served His Majesty carefully every day, and was also very apprehensive, for fear that he might displease His Majesty in the slightest.

"Steward Liang, I have come here specifically to report that the Fourth Prince has woken up."

Although Liang Jiugong sensed that it should be good news, he was only truly relieved when he actually heard it.

"That's wonderful! I'll go and report to His Majesty right away."

Liang Jiugong hurriedly entered the study, and Kangxi frowned: "What is it?"

Liang Jiugong said with a happy expression, "Your Majesty, it was a servant from the Fourth Prince's residence who came to deliver a message, saying that the Fourth Prince has woken up."

Kangxi relaxed his furrowed brows and then said, "Prepare the carriage for the Fourth Prince."

"yes."

When Kangxi arrived at the Fourth Prince's residence, Yinzhen was sitting on the bed being fed porridge by Su Peisheng. When he saw Kangxi enter, Yinzhen wanted to get out of bed to pay his respects, but Kangxi hurriedly said, "You are still ill and weak, so don't get up."

Yinzhen: "Thank you, Father Emperor."

When Emperor Kangxi arrived, Yinzhen felt embarrassed to eat and waved his hand, signaling Su Peisheng to take the porridge away.

At this moment, Kangxi said to Su Peisheng, "Give me the bowl."

Su Peisheng was surprised for a moment, then obediently handed the bowl to Kangxi.

Kangxi took the bowl and began to feed Yinzhen porridge. Yinzhen stared at his father's actions, stunned, and forgot to open his mouth when the porridge was about to be served.

Kangxi said, "Open your mouth."
